does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade to the new SandyBridge cpu; is it it compatible with the 15x mobo?

No, doesn't work. SB uses a different chipset.

Edit: If you need more CPU power get an ES 920xm from ebay, that's a fantastic processor, especially combined with Throttlestop.
