I guess it's about that time to upgrade my poor 260m, although its treated me quite well. I'm looking to get either a 5850m or gtx 460m, i'm guessing the 5850m oc'd will probably be better $/performance wise. i've gotten a few offers from people on these forums for both cards just don't know if its a fair price or not. for the 5850 i got ~$250, and the 460m ~$310.

Is it a good deal, and if it were you which would you go for? Upgrading laptop in sig.

    Thanks for the help fellas.

If you want to stick with nvidia, the 560m is also an option. From what I have seen, the 560m and 5850 are neck 'n' neck. Both GPUs are capable of achieving 10k GPU in Vantage. Eurocom is selling theirs for a decent price.

Ya I saw the thread for the 560m that Dutchess put in the M15x. I guess at the moment I had have the time/patience to setup unsupported gfx cards. If i remember correctly he had to play around a bit to get the 560m working properly or getting it recognized. Hence why I'm choosing either the 5850m or 460m.

What do you think about the price that was quoted to me from NBR users for the 5850m (around 250) and 460m (310)?

Prices are ok. You could do a bit better, I won't tell you where as that would be unfair to your offer holders but look in the market place. I can see at least one 5870 for a bit cheaper.

I see what your saying, the only reason I asked if it was fair is because I don't know what a good price is for the respective cards. If it makes any difference both the cards are official dell cards that I was offered.

    Thanks for the advice!

modifying the drivers inf file is childplay really. I did some posts about it and if you can copy paste thats all its takes really. 560M is cheaper newer & better than 460M a great asset to have :D

Maybe i just read too much into your posts and thought there was more too it...tbh i am sort of on a budget. Thats why i was picking between the two. However, if the 560 can be had for not too much more or around the same price as the two initial card choices i will definitely make that an option.

EDIT**: there is also a 6970m for $400 taken from a m18x....sounds like a good deal??

Just a quick update to get a final idea before picking the card, choices are:

    460m - around $250
    5870m - $175
5850m - waiting to hear a reply from user

    what do you guys think?

I'd go for a Dell 5850M if it could be had for $250 or less.

tbh, that's my first choice. Just a waiting game to see if I can land my hands on it over the next few days.

    6970m > 560m > 5850m
in that order from a pure performance perspective.

about 10 - 20% between them depending on the game.
i'd say its about equivalent to the 5870m judging by specs and benchmarks that i've seen.
