There are quite a few upgrade threads on this forum sub-section. A quick glance at any of them will inform you of the best upgrade options.
Something along the lines of an i7 920XM or 940XM, AMD 7970m, another 4GB DDR3 stick and definitely an SSD. Samsung 840 is a good choice.

Alternative for 7970m would be something along the lines of 6990m or similar. Still, 7970m is dirt cheap right now. 260 eur on the marketplace. you should consider it.
920/940XM may be found for similar prices, maybe a little higher.
    You can stick up to 16GB ram in the m15x r2 (2x 8GB dimm's).
You need a caddy in the optical slot to hold an extra HDD/SSD.

Buy it from the NBR Marketplace here and just negotiate international shipping fees.

7970m is really what you need if you want to play modern games. The increase in performance from my GTX 460m was four times!
Now easily getting 6300+ graphics score with my 7970m in 3dmark11 at stock clock and undervolted.

GTX 460m, GTX 560m (needs driver tweak), GTX 660m (needs driver tweak).
6970m, 6990m, 7970m (these are all plug and play with no modifications needed).

You may have x-bracket compatibility issues but hopefully not too much of an issue.
6970m may be a good choice but there are some really cheap 7970m's for sale in the Marketplace right now!

Helloo everybody, i´m thinking on upgrading too (from a 720qm/260m tandem). But i´m only interested in a GPU change for now.
I was almost decided for a gtx 670mx ( i like so much the kepler´s card line because the temps and oc possibilities with modded vbios etc :D), and the m15x users with this card, were always satisfied...
    ...but nooow i´m considering getting a 675mx or an imminent 770m :p
I know the 675mx will be cheaper, of course, than 770m, and this is very important. But the last one´s benchs (plus the fact that has 75w tdp),
    attracts me a lot.
The question here is: Does 675mx with a heavy/good oc, exceeds the advantage of the 770m´s gpu boost 2.0?? worth the price diference??
What do you think comrades? :D
    regards

I think the 770M will be a great card.

The 675MX is also great but won:t be quite as fast. It does have good OCability though. OCed to the max it can achieve just as well as the 7970M due to the AMD card running too hot and consuming too much power to push to its full potential.

I don:t think the 770M is out yet but I am looking forward to seeing comparisions with existing kepler cards.
