Yep, Mandrake had his M15x painted white. Looked great. There will be pictures of it somewhere in this forum. Inap has had a yellow one, a metallic green one and maybe one other. Been a number of other ones as well. PM Inap; he can explain how it's done.

Edit: Speak of the Devil.

cool. is there any way to change the color of the front that covers the speakers too? i think that the nice glossy white would make it look very nice. im guessing it voids your warranty right? :/

yeah you can paint the grill to but i kinda like the 2 tone look. what me and mandrake did was buy an extra casing, so if we need any warranty repairs we just swap the case, but the techs are clueless any ways.

not sure you have to ask your local paint shop, for me powder coating was cheaper, was like $50 for top and bottom. plus $100 for case

I've thought about painting mine a metallic orange or something, I can get it painted for free its just a matter of getting a case and swapping them.

Hey guys! Thanks to this thread I went ahead and tried this powder coating project with my m15x and I must say the results are awsome. Here are the results:

    Photo 3

Thank you inap for helping me out on how to remove the plastic lid and the alien head off. ;)

For next time I'm planning on buying a whole m15x case to powder coat it with another color and then I'll try to use the water transfer printing technique on it with a crazy design.

*FYI the asian characters means "Chan" which is my last name :p

Does anybody know how this would affect the warranty? I would love to do my M17x an electric blue color.

Hmm, I guess Dell wouldn't be too happy about it, especially since you need to completely disassemble the system for this.
I'd recommend getting a spare case for this, then you can still swap back in case you have to return your system.
Check here for parts, or ebay, or google.

Thank you. Looks like I will have an electric blue M17x in the near future :D . I will just buy the replacement parts as you suggested that way I can return it to stock condition when it comes time to sell it or warranty repair.

I'll be posting sometime in the next couple weeks with pics!

It's relatively easy if you have experience working with PCs. You can use this link for a step by step teardown of the m15x. Also, you can use the Alienware m15x service manual to help you. Removing the Alien head and the plastic lid on the top requires a little bit of work. inap edited a picture I sent him of the LCD lid where he tells you exactly what you need to do so you might want to ask him for reference. Hope these links help. :D

Hello Dangeel! I don't know much about paint either but if you are planning on powder coating your m15x with a local paint shop it is probable that they can remove the paint for you. I was charged with $50 for the whole job (sandblasting and powder coat it) and it took a week.

Been considering painting my M15x too, the silver is wore off on the edges.

No professional shops around these parts will do a laptop so may consider doing it myself with paint from a spray can. I've seen it done on other laptops but not a M15x. Curious what steps I'd have too take.. Sanding, prime, paint and clear coat obviously but the major details interest me.

Definitely will go flat black or white.

I was wondering if someone painted his m15x with new color upon the old paint? Won't anything happen with it during powder coating?
Or everyone removed it before painting into a new color?

You should remove it first or at least sand it everywhere so the new paint would have a good support.
