Well Dual 3870's proved to be around 15-20% faster than a single 260M give or take and about 10-15% faster than a single 280M give or take as per some benchmarks done in the Clevo forums, I dont have any links, but they wont be hard to find if you look, that being said, you are better off buying the M17x with one 260M and then adding another 260M later when you can afford it, as 2x 260M's will viciously rape dual 3870's without so much as a hint of mercy. -
I feel sorry for you guys in Canada and other countries outside the U.S.
I keep seeing it come up, how much more you have to pay.
Have any of you guys actually contacted Alienware or Dell to ask why?
I haven't seen any definitive answer to that question here.
EDIT: It's so quiet you can hear a pin drop. lol -

I asked a customer service rep here in Canada about it, he just said you can't compare one country's pricing to another.. to me that's just bull**** the pricing should be equal across the board with the only differences being currency exchange, other than that, this is either just some classic greed on dells part, or their calculations are just off right now because of the new launch and being disorganized, and hopefully prices will improve once they get themselves sorted. -
In this worldwide weak economy, I'm sure the prioriy of sales is here in the US.
They (Dellienware) will try to recoup costs from the rest of the world - however unfair that may be. -
I travel around the world a lot. I'm always amazed at how much more appliances and electronics cost compared to the U.S.
Things even cost more in countries where the product is made!
Although very unfortunate, I don't think it's any fault of Alienware or Dell. -
ROTF LMAO!
You really believe that?
Is that what the appliance, and electronics, manufacturers all around the world are doing? Sticking it to themselves and the rest of the world so they can be nice to the U.S.?
It's not the originating countries that are doing this. It's the countries of destination that cause the prices to vary so much. -

Well they should be happy with any sales they can get in this economy, i think price gouging other countries may come back to haunt them in terms of sales abroad.
Take my situation for example, i had an m17x configured for a certain price based on the US prices converted to CAN, plus Canadian taxes, all together would have cost me 2700 CAN tax inc, now that same laptop from the dell.ca costs me over 3100 officially putting it out of my price range, and now i either have to wait and see if its just a mistake and the price will come down, which hopefully it does, or dell just lost me and my money to who ever can give me similar performance for my budget. -
Agree 100000% about it biting them in the a$$.
Rob-
Dell's premium systems are ALWAYS more expensive in other countries during the first few weeks of launch. Then they normalize.
How do you explain that?? -
Wait for a few weeks and you will see these listed on ebay so you can purchase them with US prices.
-
What do you mean by normalize, sleepy? Will the prices be the same then?
-
No.
During the launch of the 1730, the price in the US was much cheaper than overseas.
The price now is more equal to what we (Americans) pay.
I was in the Army and was stationed in Germany from 98 - 03, so I do know that electronics, etc are more expensive over there. A lot of times the prices you see overseas include VAT, which can be as much as 18%, IIRC. -
guys who want to order through EPP and get the nameplate, talk to a rep and they will take care of you
-
Thanks for the tip! -

Ive never actually bought a laptop off ebay before, how does dell warranty factory in to dell laptops sold on ebay? if someone were to purchase a m17x on ebay would they be able to configure an after purchase warranty through dell officially? -
Yes.
Dell warranties are 100% transferrable and, in the case of the M17x, should be too since it is being sold and supported by Dell.
There is a xfer ownership form on Dell's website. -

Oh yeah, just a heads up as a lot of people given the excitement and all probably haven't though about this but if you think you might want to sell your m17x down the road, maybe its a better idea to just take the stock m17x nameplate, it might be more palatable to a future potential buyer, than with one that has your name on it.
-
So more equal but not equal. Wasn't that the whole point of the discussion?
I was stationed over in Germany from 84-87, and many, many places globally.
And now you're only saying what I was all along!!!!!!!!!
It's not the fault of Alienware or Dell.
You've only hit the tip of the iceberg with the VAT etc. -
Very good call.
-
no prob, this person i'm talking to now is very helpful
-
The VAT alone in Germany is 19% !!

here's a video of the curved diplay Gophn put up

be warned its like cloverfield with it lo
-
Yes i posted this suggestion earlier but the thread moves at 9 million miles an hour.
I would think most people would just take the standard M17x nameplate vs something customised . If you decide to sell your machine down the road it would be better if the machine didnt say "John's Super Laptop" on the bottom , unless of course the guy your selling it to happens to be named John also .
People really should take that suggestion to heart because most of us are pretty hardcore and wont keep these machines for ever . -

Ouch, here in Canada and the province of Quebec which i live in i have to pay to the federal gov and the provincial gov a total 14% in taxes, i thought that was bad lol i feel 5% better now. -
I just called and he said no. Who did you talk to?
-
Wow. Just WOW!
I wonder how much that mofo's gonna cost
-
i'm talking to people online....they seem to be a lot nicer, one i got disconnected with that said it is good and the second said yes as well and I am currently ordering with them
those guys on the phone are lazy bastar*s lol -
I was told just under 3k.
-
I so want one of those!
What's the res? Can a laptop handle it, and still be playable? -
The only reason why I want to stay with the same person right now is he said he would upgrade my shipping for free for me since it's taking a while.
I tried online chat before and had a bad experience. -
According to this http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/98947-13-alienware-shows-crysis-2880 it looks like 2880 x 900.
And I believe a M17x w/ sli 280's would push it just fine
-
hmmmmmmmm that is tempting, but nameplate>shipping that is 2 days faster lol I think i want to ask my person for free shipping
-
Never hurts to ask.
-
I hope the nameplate customization doesn't push you guys back a few weeks.
Just something to think about.... -
haha yea keep me updated
yea i hope not.... -
I dont know if it has been posted, but here you go. The guy fails with alienFX so hard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ4qzGpAA9k
But it looks otherwise. -
Yeah, it should. Not as bad as I thought it would be calculating pixels.
-
Atleast you guys on the .com site have all these great options available. The Dell UK site is so poor!
-
More here on the display (from CES 2008)

Maybe I can guilt them into free shipping since they never called me back... They said they would today as soon as the EPP issue got resolved
-
"Most powerful 17" notebook in the Universe"I love it!
-
Sorry, dbl post. Again.
Impressive. And they drove it with a single 3870. (desktop)
I'll shudder when I see the pricetag. -
He also said shipping within 1 week.
Don't know if I trust a guy who doesn't know how to use AlienFX. -
Yeah...that failing on alienfx...his fault or comps fault. I'm not sure if i would prefer if it was him who cant use a computer...The guy who designs them, or the the comp..decisions.
-
I don't think he was a designer - just a "lowly" spokesperson (glorified salesman)
-
Ah, well I see him in the vast majority of the alienware videos. But I like your answer more.
-
Well, then he might be a designer.
Just don't know..... -
he is on a lot of their web/marketing videos hima and the guy with the handle bar mustache
