Y'know, in retrospect... I'm glad I got my Alienware without a custom nameplate via EPP. It can make the resale value go up a little if it's got a blank plate -vs- having somebody's name, a saying on it, etc. It loses a little flair, but...

Thanks for the responses from everyone regarding the blu-ray burner - this thread is moving so fast I simply cannot quote everyone. :p Sorry for that!

I've found an external BD burner from Buffalo that I think I'll go with. I need it for data backup only, and USB seems fine for that. Wish it had esata, but oh well.

I will get the BD combo drive for the M17x that Dell has up right now, since I'd like to be able to enjoy BD movie playback without dealing with HDCP issues that USB external drives may present.

I've got to admit I do like that Panasonic slot-load slim BD burner I found, but at $600 it's just too steep. Perhaps Dell might want to consider offering a BD burner in the future.

I was concerned about replacing the burner on the M17x because on my last notebook the burner crapped out after about 50 burns. True, that one only required two screws to pop out. The M17x optical drive does require surgery to get to, and I'm comfortable with that - I just hope it's not something I will need to do repeatedly. I burn discs a lot for my job, and need a reliable burner.

the laptop is already alot more expensive than comparable laptops (see ASUS W90VP). THey won't raise it. That would ruin their sales IMO

Wow, I just saw that in W prime due to the I7 in the D900F it pulled a 7.1 sec score! What kind of score at least for benchmarking purposes, does the X9300 get?

Still getting the M17x ;) lol just curious

Either way I still think I am going to go with the Alienware regardless of the Processor... although I am wondering if you could put a I7 in the Alienware... I wonder if the motherboard would allow it, and Cooling for the CPU is good enough lol

im probably going to buy the new m17x and i was wondering would the T9600 2.8GHz and the dual 280m be good for gaming on high settings? if not what would be a good cpu for gaming besides the QX9300, im trying to keep it under 3k usd.

i thought we were over comparing the i7 and qx series cores...
this is a gaming laptop with 2 gpu's not one...

if you want to make your eepeen larger, then by all means, get the sager or other unit with the i7. but just remember, you lack an additional gpu and your gaming benches will then "shrink"

??? Now I was just comparing the CPU's not the actual gaming performance... I was looking at the Sager 9280 for the longest time and was about to make the dive... And then the New Alienware blew me out of the water

:D... Ahhh I have always dreamed of gettting an Alienware, then they went stale for a while and expensive.... But this new laptop just has too much to pass up and at an amazing price! 3,800 for Dual 280m's, X9300 Quad, 4gb DDR3 memory at 1333mhz, slot loaded Blu-ray, sweet Alien FX and fairly future proof.... I just can't get over it, I haven't been this excited for a while... I'ts like Christmas in the summer! and I'm graduating today! how could this day get better :D

2953 for me :D look at my sig, used a 7% student discount that anyone with half a brain could BS and a 4% discount with DPA :D you can always get the qx9300 off the bay and install it yourself for 1/3 of the price

As you know I've had a few A.W. laptops and this new M17X is far and away the most well thought out and promising model yet.

IMO, you picked the very best time to get your dream rig!

    BTW, congrats on graduation!

I still think it will come sooner than that, they all have to say its gonna come later because they dont want an uproar if it ends up being later.

Thats a big jump. I heard of the XPS M1710 getting replaced by a M1730 but not the M170. When the M1730s are out will all those XPS systems be replaced with the M17x? Quite the upgrade.

    to anyone who is interested:

after i ordered a suspicious email came to me supposed to be from dell. i sadly opened it and then someone took under control my gmail. i ordered from uk website. i dont know if the technical problems include attacks too. just pay attention.

i have to cancel my order now because the f m has my receipt id inside my gmail and can change some details maybe even though i think they cant ship to an adress other than the one on credit card right?

maybe its someone from here that knew i ordered the m17x.

if someone has abilities to get the changed password of my gmail please help me and send me pm. i dont have any hope to recover it otherwise. and i dont have to mention other important documents for my job.

if someone willing to help please contact me.

Yeah i talked to two different CS guys. Both of which were EXTREMELY nice and responsive. Helping with whatever, the one i talked to the most "Anil Kumar" said that my processor i ordered with my laptop was on backorder, and said he would try hard to get me one and sent out my laptop as soon as possible. Which was very cool of course, then i called later to just ask more stuff about shipping/EDDs and stuff. Another guy said that the processor was on backorder/out of stock...Yuppp. But they said that it should make it there by the EDD which is 7/7

Quick question for you guys: is there any difference that you know of between the 128GB SSD and 256GB SSD options? I really don't need the extra space since I keep most of my media on external drives and am not planning on upgrading for $200 extra, but if they are different companies and/or types or something, that'd be something to consider.

Without having any screws on the bottom how the hell are you supposed to open it up and do upgrades yourself?
Is it going to have some sort of proprietary tool thats needed? This has me confused.
Trying to see if getting a base CPU first and upgrading later to save some money, but this whole screw free bottom plate has me stumped.
