Uh oh, looks like Apple's ready to compete. They just dropped their prices to pretty reasonable levels. The high end Macbook Pro with an educational discount is only $2099.

I post this in the Alienware thread 'cause I was planning to get the new m17x, but I'm starting to get torn here.

But come on, gaming's more important, right?

there is ZERO competition from any Mac.

 

I don't think the buyer that wants a Macbook is the same person that wants a m17x. You're special case I guess.

 

You buy an Alienware to game on the latest and greatest. You buy an Apple to look sexy in Starbucks while sorting your photoalbums and pretending to be a video editor.

For $1,799 the base M17X config runs circles around the 17 Macbook Pros.

(And yes, I am an Apple fan)

A lot of marketing and hype.

 

AAFES asked that I give them five days before making any purchase on the M17x. Seems they are going to try and get Dell to fix the Complete Care problem or have Dell tell them how service members can get Complete Care.

Right now, if you purchase a M17x thru AAFES, it won't have complete care on it.

 

Indeed... My brother argues with me over how macs are better and everyone agrees with him. It inflicts physical pain with me to talk to him about computers.

 

If I can't get lojack to help with recovery then I want it to make the notebook explode like a stick of dynamite. I wonder if they make an expansion card to do that.....

Is there anyway to get a discount on your complete care thing? I was thinking of buying it after i receive it. student discount? coupons?

 

That was the reason why it took me 2 days to order it. I wanted the extra $99 to be included in the discount. I'm sure if you call them they'll make you a deal but will probably want you to get more than one year.

 

It's really not a big deal. Order the laptop now and upgrade your warranty later.

IIRC, the prices are the same when configuring and upgrading/extending afterwards.

 

Yeah i already have ordered it as you know. I am just investigating how to insure it. I have seen safeware (which is 565$ for 3 years of coverage with 2500$ coverage requested). Complete care. Also can you put it under your car or house insurance?

 

Ya I would think this would go under personal property, like house... However just becuase it is the right thing for the Insurance to do, doesn't mean they do lol

 

Check your policy to see what is covered. On my auto policy, the contents of my car are only covered up to $1500 and subject to my deductible. I can get more money off my home policy, but still have to cover the deductible. Some policies explicitly exclude computer equipment, while others cover market value, so you can't replace a 2-3 year old computer on what they'll pay. Ask your agent, as there are too many variables to give an answer here.

 

Check your policy as coverages varys among policies.

Mine, for instance, does not offer coverage outside the U.S.

dell euro order software sucks! dell too. today they cancelled my order without telling me anything. i had to check myself the order status. i told them before two days to cancel and then told them not to. today i reordered before 5 hours and not even the confirmation email came.

as least it was the last day of the coupon :0

 

Still waiting for my confirmation email, I ordered from .co.uk on sunday morning. Guess they are busy or trying to work out just how short they are on stock before they confirm the order! poor mr. black case they must have known it would be the most popular

Whizzo. That video rocks so hard. Also to report on insurance issue. I called them up, I am covered if I am living in a dorm only theft with 1000 deductible. Kinda sucks, doesn't cover accidental. Guess that is what complete care is for. Anyone know any alternative sites/solo places that insure laptops besides safeware?

I've seen older reports of 256gb ssd's being slower than 128gb ssd's. Someone was talking about SLC and MLC, but i'm not sure what exactly that is or if SSD's have improved. I want to get the 256gb SSD but if 128 is faster/better than forget it.

I know I prolly should post this in the SSD thread but I figure all the brains are in this one.

Boo squaretrade doesn't cover theft...even though my home insurance covers it with 1k deductible(too much). Also i cant figure out how to make it have accidental insurance on square trade...they wont let me do it.
