I just don't understand it can't cost them that much more to produce the SSD versus normal HDD, so why is so damn costly?
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
-
Could it be a scam? Or just new tech?
I remember the cost of an album was $7 and suddenly, the CD came out and their cost was $15. It's "interesting" that they should charge more for a CD given the ridiculously low cost of a CD in bulk and the ease with which the music is transfered to the disc.
I think it's a little of both. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yea but we aren't talking small increases, we are talking, 500GB 7,200 RPM HDD for 100 or less, and then a 160gb SSD for 400+ dollars, it is absolutely ridonkulous
-
It is crazy right now because it is a niche product and the memory manufacturers (samsung, especially) have been known to keep prices high.
Once it becomes the norm - I give it till Q4 2010 - prices will be like HDD prices are now. We'll all be looking back on how crazy it was to spend $700 for a 256GB SSD
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Exactly my thoughts, I am going to hold off on SSD, I'd rather put my money towards Hardware like the GPU or CPU
-
Have you ever had an SSD MrButterBiscuits?
Experiencing one in every day can be very persuasive.
I'm sure they are not for everyone yet though. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
No that's why I asked you earlier about what are the real benefits? here lemme quote myself... -
I would absolutely love an SSD. It is the one sure fire thing you can do to any computer for instant speed/performance increases.
Just don't like the prices right now, that's all. -
For me it's not so much the fast boot up times, lower temps etc.
Everything and every click of the mouse just feels snappier and program launches etc. are quicker.
Granted, in games the only perceptable difference is the loading of cut scenes etc. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
well that and ram
lol... Mark my words I will get one when we see them more mainstream, and by that time we'll have 500gb SSD as well
-
Here's a 500gb SSD.
-
Does anyone know how much longer it takes someones computer to boot up from a HDD than a SSD? IMO i would much rather save the money and get a larger HDD than SSD and wait the ten or twenty more seconds. When i go on my computer though I'm usually not in a rush, others might be
EDIT: excuse my ignorance if it is much longer than 10 or 20 seconds -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Wow soo small as well! But you'd be paying a very heavy premium for that baby, probably the price of a decen't laptop (~1k)
And Bdkzilla I agree with you strongly, but remember it is load times and program boot times as well (and burning I assume), but anyway my computer after Bios boots in like 10 seconds and I have 1 500 gb 7,200 HDD -
A SSD usually cut's the time in half. And that's only one reason to use an SSD.
If you prefer the mass storage of a HDD then you have no reason to use an SSD.
-
There are many videos on Youtube that show this.
I have watched many of them.
This was an interesting test.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJMGAdpCLVg&feature=fvw -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Thank you very much
! Getting ready to watch it, is there sound?
HMM I feel like this is being very biased, as I can almost gaurantee you that is a 5,400 rpm HDD...
LOL Vibration test, good thing I know I can use my Laptop when my building is collapsing in an 5.0 richter scale earth quake! -
No Problem.
There are tons of videos.. Yes you can only take it for what the poster says..
Some comparisons are against 7200 rpm drives.. Just do a search for ssd vs 7200 drive.
I would love to have them myself. Just cant justify cost versus a few saved seconds/minutes right now.
Once the price comes down, I will have 2 of them in the new notebook.
Some older laptops
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt6VbOY3xE0&feature=related -
thanks for the vid! Yea thats nice to have but to me the extra 27.5 seconds isn't worth it to me. Granted add that up throughout the year and your saving yourself quiet a bit of time
-

Jesus listen to this guy, especially at minute 4:00 lol!

Lol.. yea the vibration test was awesome.. Can you imagine seeing two m17x notebooks up there.. it would make me cringe. ahaha -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I would find them... I would go Taken on them... "they took his dream and shook it's foundations, now he will kill them" lol
-
dude i only put my m17 on us and canada site and some body from Arab bought it ..... and he hasn't paid yet ... im not going to ship out imma proably gonna sell it to the next best offer
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Ok getting back on task, WHEN I get my M17x I am going to do a written and Video review...
As Far as Benchmarks and Test apps, I am going to use
General Apps-
1.Corel Video studio X2
2. Futuremark Vantage
3. WPrime
4. HWmonitor the whole time to see heating etc.
5. FRAPS
Gaming Benchamrks
1.ARMA2
2.Crysis/ and Warhead
3. Sims 3
4. Bio-Shock
5. GTA IV
6.Zeno Clash
7. Drakensang the Darkeye
8. Fallout 3
And of course an indepth review on each feature and, or part, so multi page and Multi-part video... Am I missing anything, or is there anything else you guys would like to see included? -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Good Idea Moo, see If you can push BrunoRoc, maybe he will buy it for ~ 1400 or so -
you could do a battery drain test
-
I didn't get SSD's for 2 reasons:
1)Price
2)Wanted to have something fun to do next year (upgrading the M17x
) Didn't want to max it out now and be bored in 6 months....
-
have the arab pay up front. he's prolly an oil millionaire anyway, he doesn't give a darn
-
lol @ 2....
@ whizzo its been 13 hours and no contact or payment
also usually the buyer will the disputes and its arab so i proably would never get it back -
Moo..
Give the arab a day or two then figure out what you want to do.
Don't try and get too inpatient
Good things come to those who wait (like me - I am PATIENTLY waiting my M17x)!
lol -
Sleey0 later when you upgrade i will possibly buy one of your 260's
i dont really trust the guy ..... no feedback ... i only wanted to ship to US and Canada. Shipping is gonna be alot. ... so many things that are sketchy -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
So what do you guy's think? -
i told you battery drain test
-
more interested in a good unboxing vid. Something to tide us over until our machines arrive!
2nd the vote for the battery drain test! -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Right sorry Moo it got cluttered didn't see your post, so I'll do 6-8 battery drain tests.
1. 280's in sli for standard use, one with intergrated on standard use (both High performance)
2. 280's and Intergrated (balanced power settings)
3. 280's and Intergrated (Low power setting's)
4. 280's on gaming, and Integrated for gaming
lol
5. and finally on overlocked (TBD) tests on both
DEFINITELY ON THE UNBOXING VIDEO!!!! I love watching them, and I can't wait to do one
-
Battery drain test w/Qx9300 and 280's = lol
-
lol good point ... but gimme the drain test with the 9400
ill be happy
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
HAHAH... I know
lol
Although I don't think anyone is going to be doin using their 280's or 260's in SLI if they want to conserve battery life
-
How about 3DMARK06 score.
I know some people are like "Oh that's outdated and isn't a good benchmark tool anymore" but for comparison against other systems scores and would give some of us a better idea what it is capable of.
Everything else would be great.
Almost forgot maybe a F.E.A.R. 2 game test.
Thanks -
Agree on the 3DM06
I still use it as well (old habits die hard, I guess) -
"vantage is the new battle front"
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yup I just got vantage recently so I will do
-
I'm a big advocate of variety, which makes the decision of AW to offer the choice of lid designs in the last model a good decision. However, for the new model, I still wish the would have offered the red as well.
-
I think I'm going to add the 128GB SSD...Its not too bad in the cost department and I don't need 250GB HDD (Too Big). If only they had like an 80GB SSD
EDIT: Two questions regarding SSD vs HDD
1. Which produces less heat?
2. Which is better for battery life? -
If you missed it a link to 3d06 Marks was posted in the Gaming and Graphics forum for the GTX 280M SLi with a T9900 in the Clevo M980nu.
Source: Notebook Journal.DE
P.S. Note: The Cyber System i17 is the Clevo D900F so that score is mostly CPU. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Really? hmmm I don't like this Bench... How did a M17 get 15K with dual 3870's then?
They are saying an additional 280 only added 500 points in 3d mark? -
SSD are better in speed, reliability, and energy efficiency. Their only negative currently is capacity (relatively speaking) and cost. Here's where I see a problem. How do you know how well these off shaped laptops will fit? Is there any kind of cinching that goes on? Or does one size fit all?
BTW, who doesn't need more capacity? -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Hmm let's see there was the Boa-Slim case, The Alienware Orion, or my favorite the Slappa Velocity MATRIX PRO backpack
http://redirectingat.com/?id=525X832&url=http://www.slappa.com/velocity-matrix-laptop-backpack
and a cool sleeve for it as well...
http://redirectingat.com/?id=525X83...m/ptac-matrix-laptop-sleeve?sc=2&category=133 -
Just do both!!
-
uh huh... a 40-60gig SSD for the OS, a fast HDD for games.
-
-I don't plan on gaming, so I save space there
-Music and Videos are on my Archos 5, 60GB
-I've also got a 100GB portable HDD if I ever need any extra space or if I need to back-up anything
-Not risking my AW with p2p programs (Limewire, Utorrent ect.)
-Don't need any HUGE programs besides Office, Catia, and Bitdefender.
Come to think of it, 80GB might even be too much for me lol. But its nice to have a few GB kickin back just in case
