Maybe the point was necessary for some extra space surrounding the webcam? It's right underneath it... I don't know..

I've never liked latches or the position of the keyboard on a laptop.

I wish, if the laptop has to have a touchpad, that the placement was reversed so the keyboard was at the front edge. Maybe it's just me. lol

I always use an external mouse.

Safeware, I've used it for years now. Cheap insurance to cover spills, theft, all other accidental damage almost anywhere in the world.

My global "business" coverage is about $200 a year. I've never had a claim though.

EDIT: About the only places they don't cover is war zones. Unfortunately for me that's where I spend the better part of the year.

I've got a funny feeling it won't cover it overseas, especially while on a "business" trip.

    I'll check with them though.

I know we haven't seen enough pictures of the new m17x to make a really accurate judgment, but from my perspective, the M17 looks thicker

    Thinnest to thickest:

    M17 -> XPS M1730 -> M17x (old and new) -> Clevo D900 -> Toshiba Qosmio X305 -> ASUS W90 -> Clevo M980nu

    2.48" thick 13lbs. 4oz.

I need to make a correction though. M980nu is thicker (but lighter).

Have you guys seen this discount?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=385356

Depending how much they sell the 500GB disks for this will help keep cost down if you plan on ordering the M17x. I already ordered 2. Forget SSD when you can get 1TB 7200RPM for under $200.

go "budget" now for a bit over 2000... stock CPU, RAM, do HDD yourself, the GTX 260M is more than enough for gaming. then upgrade to SLI or the GTX 280M when you have $$$$ :)

Lol true, but I got a little excited when I saw this thread :)

But you can bet I will be ordering one June 2nd when they are available. I've never ordered an AlienWare, so can anyone elaborate on how long it takes to ship their new systems? Are we talking about a matter of 2 weeks? Or over a month?

you know what i don't understand when looking at the prices, when you upgrade to a 280m it "costs" 200 dollars more but with sli, it costs another 800 dollars for another graphics card, doesn't make sense to me

Starting College makes for a great excuse to break up. ;)

Heh you know Moo it seems like it's more important to you to get this machine early so you can write the guides and be the answerman. I assure you even if you wait a couple of months, until you're not worried about affording it, there will still be loads of questions and guides to write.

I'll be contributing but I know I don't plan on writing out long how-to posts and I'm the type to get fed up answering the same simple questions over and over real quick.

(Caution: If annoyed, I'm also the type to give made up answers that may or may not brick your machine.)

the base price cover a 260m gtx and the cost of a 280 m gtx is about 100 more then a 260 so they charge 200 to make a rofit

they still gain the whole cost of the card

SLI means they have to cover the other half of the 1 card plus another card

Is this quote old news already? I know there has been speculation regarding ATI support but this looks like some confirmation.

"One of the leading notebook analysts, Cisco Cheng, expressed opinion about the `gaming beast' thus: "The Alienware M17x will be one of the first gaming laptops that will support the Nvicia GeForce 280M GTX card in SLI formation, and it will have support for ATI's CrossFire technology at a later date.""

To me this means lets sell it for as much $$ as we can now then drop the price with ATI cards at a later date.

Thank you for that Crossfire confirmation

    So now different options arise...

Do you go soft at first and get (1) 260 or 280, then save up and upgrade to a pair of 4870s later?

Or do you just stay with Nvidia? Will the performance and pricing be decent that in the end... it just makes sense?

Will allegiances be turned around and prior relationships discounted? We'll see :D
