At a "later date" there will be something better than 4870s "just around the corner."
Gotta hate when companies pull the "later date" crap.

dom't metion the 4870 gddr5. it's stupid. it may come out for alienware since the heat issue won't be a factor but it will be the best gpu out. but alienware is going to overcharge on him if that's the case. unless money and patience isn't a factor then go for it.

Anyone care to elaborate how long it usually takes for AW to ship a new system after release date?
-
hard to say. the release date is only when AW officially releases the infos on the new notebook. it'll presumably also be available fro pre-ordering then, but there's no way of saying when they'll start shipping.

I just decided to return my M17 and get ready for this one, 15% of restocking fee is a pain, but I hate the design of the M17 (love skullcap though, but the lighting and keyboard are suck, the quick star buttons are not even light up), hopfully i'll be able to refund it quickly.
I have sone questions, i'll go with a single 280m and a better proc. And wonder if I can install another 280m inSLI later?? Should i go with the 260m and wait for the 4870xfire or a single 280m and then upgrade it to SLI?? also can some1 tells the different between 4870xfire and the 280m SLI?? Which 1 is better. -
yes, you can add another GTX 280M later on. can't tell you if you should upgrade now or later, your call. as for the endless ATI HD4870X2 vs. Nvidia GTX 280M in SLI debate, it really comes down to personal preference. ATIs are better for benchmarking and some games, the Nvidias are better at most other games.
-
WOW
AW still charging for the 1900x1200 resolution in a 2k system ..... -
presumably, yes. might be standard, but from the articles i've read so far, the general gist is that it's an upgrade.
-
lol.... thats wrong
-
I say keep the M17.
You can buy a single GTX 280M and upgrade later but 1) it's the better choice to spend more on the vid cards and less on the CPU (and upgrade the CPU later) and 2) CrossfireX 3870s perform better than a single GTX 280M.
If your final plan is to buy the CrossfireX ATI cards based on statements that they will be released at a later date then stick with the M17.
-We don't know if "ATI cards" means GDDR5 4870s.
-We don't know how long AW means by a later date (See Also: 4870s for M17)
-We don't know how or even if the Nvidia Chipset will support ATI cards
-We don't know what tech we will all be drooling over when the ATI cards are made available
If I had already purchased the M17, and was going to be charged a 15% restock fee for returning it, I wouldn't bet on what ifs. I would hold on to it until I saw definitively, in the form of an option and price on an order page, that there was something better worth buying, then I'd sell the M17 and buy the better option. -

mmm. i wonder who took this route.

I'm leaving for vacation June 18th. I get back August 2 so obviously a notebook would do a lot of good during all that time. Should I just wait to get back to order this beast or does anyone think it'll ship within time?
Thanks! -
I don't think it will arrive in time for your vacation but on June 2nd you can find out for sure.
-
And as for the pre-order thing, I highly doubt it will only be available for pre-order on June 2nd. I would guess you can order one and start the process that very day. And since it's a new system, would anyone else think that maybe shipping will be a bit quicker since a. it's expensive to begin with and b. if they're officially releasing it, they must have plenty of stuff in stock to ship out... -
-
-
buy Moo's M17, a bargain for 1600$, and still very up to date.
-
-
Another quick question.. should I order one or two of these http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=341-8658 ? I'm really not that tech savy (with hardware anyway) so I'm just confirming whether or not that HD will be compatible. Do they plug into a smart bay type slot or do they have to be inside the actual case. Excuse my noobiness -
Did they say what kind of 256gb SSD are they going to use, is it the samsung one?
P.S: that is a vile avatar, brunoroc... -

just and example. when the m17x comes out, expect a delay in online how to's for a bit.
ps: this was for clauss in regards to the HDD install. -
but im talking with him cuz he is selling his M1730 for 1050 for me
idk much about him but if u guys could help me just pm me ...
i dont want to go offtopic
thanks man
-
If you're curious about 280M performance, check out the benchmarks I've added to the 280M thread, link in sig
Now you'll know if you need two cards or if one will suffice -
id love a 1730 still myself but depending on price it will be the new aw or the new sager sli for me this time
-
So have people in the past been ordering the cheapest HD and just upgrading themselves to reap some savings?
I was thinking about doing this but then putting a SSD in there. -
Sounds like one hell of a laptop. Too bad the i7 couldn't make it in. Is there any chance that this is overclockable if one gets the QX9300? -
JerryJ confirmed that there will be some kind of OC function that gives Extreme CPUs two additional clock boosts.
No definite answer how fast but rumors are an extra .3Ghz and .5Ghz. -
I wonder if this OC function will work for all processor or if there will be some way to use it with our own separately bought processor.
-
-
So for the game enthusiast, which do you think would be better? Core i7 Extreme + 1 GTX 280M or QX9300 + 2x GTX 280M? Hard for me to decide between this new AW and the new Sager/Clevo. -
game enthusiast would be the SLI and QX
a i7 to a game enthusiast would be useless -
Not even a close call. The QX9300 + 2x GTX 280M by a landslide! -
Dual GPUs and any decent mobile CPU would be better for gaming than a single GPU and an i7.
-
-
.... that question is starting to make me think......society
MORE GPU power will always be better when playing games then MORE CPU power -
. I just wish Sager/Clevo could have found a way to do SLI with their i7.
-
the heat is just to much its gonna be awhile before they can die shrink it to calm the heat down
-
-
remember here (for those that think AW is far to high priced) that AW is attempting to reach more people now. with the backing of the dell brand and the outreach dell has, this can be accomplished now.
while i agree the price will still be higher then the sager and other units, it will still remain within reach for others that desire to have an AW now.
AW is going more mainstream, but keeping the gamer enthusist appeal. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
everyone wanted core i7 and dual gpu's. even me.
-
I didn't.
I would've took i5/Clarksfied though.
