Would be interesting to see a RX 5700 + Ryzen 3900X refresh of that Helios
-
That's exactly the system I want, but the 3700x would suffice. They would have to consider their market after all and keep the prices down to drum up more PR.Vasudev likes this.

Azor joined AMD today as the company's Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions.
From the link below... Welcome Frank!!" Azor is an end-product (solution) architect .

Either AMD are planning to enter gaming systems manufacturing business or the role seems pretty meaningless?Last edited: Jul 15, 2019Vasudev likes this.

lets just hope he does marketing real well and brain wash some amd fanbois so we can see more amd offering in laptops. going 16 cores AMD laptops would pressure oems to go that route and it is always a good thing.

Maybe they will actually do something meaningful, like adhere to MXM standards and not produce proprietary filth or crippled mobile junk like Max-Q rubbish. (Probably not, but it's a nice thought about what could be if they actually cared enough to do the right thing.)
-
BGA will be more nowadays. Since People are getting intelligent and rarely upgrade their MXM card frequently nvidia sales will hurt, so making BGAs does mean you'll have more sales figure and Max Money as profit.Mr. Fox likes this.
-
Yes and No... if a person can't upgrade a laptop they have to sell it used. And, that increases the used laptop supply greatly. That's adding competition to the market that the new laptop sellers can't match price / performance.
Making owners sell on and buy new each generation actually might work against the new laptop makers.
Just like Nvidia / AMD get stung by the used market when compared against new products, with the used market making much more sense in value for most people. -
You do have the odd case of the helios 500 where I would buy in a hot second if I knew I could put a 3700x in it.
It is admittedly an outlier scenario but considering the scenario within the context of the total options available its basically 1 of 2 so (I feel) its worth mentioning.Last edited: Jul 26, 2019 -
Or, it can also mean that they sell nothing whatsoever because the smartest people that used to spend the most for awesome laptops, and then spend more later to upgrade them, will simply switch back to desktops and say to hell with crazy expensive crippled laptop BGA feces and won't buy anything but super inexpensive laptops going forward (like me). If the only option left is BGA filth, the only kind worth buying is going to be the extra cheap junk so I can toss it into a dumpster when it croaks.

It was on amazon for $1,299
If it was refreshed with 3000 series and RX 5700 XT I would probably get one too.jaybee83 likes this. -
We can hope bro !!

The sad thing is, the only products actually worth purchasing today are those viewed as outlier scenarios and niche products. Everything mainstream is utter garbage that never should have been brought to market in the first place, LOL.
-
Sad to see Azor's departure from a previously superb company. My feeling is that AW will move away from a visionary design driven company into a corporate one motivated by profit margins.

Already done several years ago. Nothing left. It’s DELL now. Just look at what’s happened last +4 years.jclausius, Vasudev, jaybee83 and 1 other person like this.

The golden age of AW is over, it started years before but Azor leaving is symbolic of the decline.
What's left though? We lost BGA CPUs and MXM GPUs when the R series came out. At least the R series had beefy cooling, decent keyboards, and good build quality. All standard.
I haven't read up on the new AW models. Anybody know if good cooling and build quality is completely niche now?Vasudev, jclausius, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
It ended around 2011. While it may be symbolic to some extent, it is no great loss. It might even mark a favorable new beginning if his replacement is more old-school in his thought processes and empowered to do the right thing. If his replacement is a turdbook-loving yuppie muppet/puppet, it won't matter and nothing will improve.
Crippled RAM speeds, goofy throttling issues, cancerous firmware, stunted power-handling capabilities, sketchy/buggy Windows software and failure prone fire starters. But, extremely nice chassis build quality, very expensive, and some view them as being aesthetically pleasing. So, pretty much status quo other than the Area 51M not being a BGA turdbook.Last edited: Jul 28, 2019 -
Read this.... Soldered ram wasn’t enough http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/bga-venting-thread.798775/page-225#post-10922543
Search also TRIPOD in the search box you see on top of the page. I’m sure you’ll find a lot about last years Alienware’s. Really Disgusting. One start http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...50h-coffee-lake.810891/page-118#post-10835665
Azor has preferred working more with the XPS line the last years. But this Dell model is also a fiasco as the Alienware’s. Everything he has been the boss for the last years is awful reading.Last edited: Jul 28, 2019Vasudev, jclausius, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
Hi Bro, the XOC bin file did not show in the bios. It was definitely on my flash drive

I saw that the other day. This could be a partnership that ends up making Clevo better as well. Laptop world is pretty messed up and needs all the help it can get now. I hope their influence does something positive to turn the tide on the plethora of crippled mobile rubbish littering the landscape.

I thought this was interesting as well when I saw this announcement.
Perhaps it'll force Corsair more towards doing things right and innovate in order to complete. It'd be really refreshing for them to come out strong and shame the current players in the field ... in turn that'll force the current companies to up their game in the gaming laptop sector. It'll be great to see a win-win come out of this. -
Corsair has built up a huge network of support in their suppliers network, and leveraging that seems like a natural - that's where big win's can be had - for both end user prices and profits - and unique solutions may be sourced much easier. I hope a large dose of back to basics creativity hits them - affecting their build choices.Papusan, Mr. Fox, jclausius and 1 other person like this.

Indeed. With the introduction of the Area 51M, it put another system in the modular sector along side Clevo / Sager etc... so let's hope they focus where it counts for when it comes to enthusiasts who want the real deal.
It's interesting to see HP who has been overshadowed by AW/Dell with gaming laptops, going LM on their new system... all the while the Dell XPS is still in the same chassis, which reminds me of Intel with them milking the 14nm process many times over....
It's not necessarily a bad thing, because the products can still be good, however, it's a clear example of milking it due to there not being any direct competition....until now....Papusan, Mr. Fox, jclausius and 1 other person like this. -
EVGA tried with their expensive Jokebooks. A huge fiasco and now Dead as the dinosaurs. If the main goal is spend resources on custom desktop builds but go for similar Evga Jokebooks this will do nothing for notebook enthusiasts. Status quo and maybe even worse. We will see how this pan out. But I don’t trust big companies regarding powerful laptops. For them is a Trashbook with expensive soldered hardware equal High performance. Just hear what Azor said about their new m15/m17 R2 line Gaming laptops. Amazing powerful products.Last edited: Jul 29, 2019

I agree. The possibility for something good to happen is there, but my skepticism is guarded. Will have to wait and see if anything good comes of it. If not, I will not have a surprised look on my face. However, I will have a surprised look on my face if it turns out great. Let's cross our fingers and hope they surprise us, but not be disappointed if they don't. It will be status quo with the mobile rubbish if nothing improves.
-
You might see Legion y740 like iCUE lights on clevos.
-
Origin's been around for a lot longer building PC's and laptops, successful to the point of survival at the least. Corsair has the $ and component experience and looking to expand into systems they did the right thing and bought / partnered with an experienced company with seasoned people in a successful team.
That's not the same as EVGA, and I hope they pull it together to try again some day too.Last edited: Jul 29, 2019 -

I can't look at her PC all the time, whenever I get time, I use my custom OS ISO to remove them and optimize the OS.

Yeah, Frank Azor left the sinking ship knowing what he did! His Legacy will stand in shame. Read my previous posts after the link below.

R.I.P. AMD rather. Alienware now actually might stand a chance again *lol* in theory at least...

If AW use good quality components w/ Prema Magic they might survive otherwise LGA on laptops w/ crappy FW is worse than ultra low end desktop builds.

Not sure I'm too impressed with Asus' gaming laptops.
