Concerning amd ati gpu's not being on haswell laptops, I found nothing supporting that claim, the 8970m will be released on clevo systems sporting haswell in the next month or 2, so I think it is safe to say that alienware will see them in the coming months aswell .

I was referring to his post wherein he referred that review pointing out the IPS screen had poor viewing angles.

The M14x R3 in the U.S.A alienware website on the 2nd config option @ $1,350 with the 1080p display and add +$150 for GTX 765m.

So a total of $1,500 for GTX 765m and 1080p display plus tax, then if you can get around 10-20% discount, you would be around $1,200-1,300 which is not bad. So I dunno who said you need to go above $1,700+ just to get the 1080p display and gtx 765m.

It's the IPS screen that laptopmag reviewed. There's only 2 screens on m14x, 1 is 1366x768 and the 1080p IPS Matte Display. Obviously the 1080p matte IPS display is not the best IPS display and is mediocre based on their review.

Keeping an eye on more reviews for the 17. I know the reaction to the redesign seems fairly negative, but I think I prefer it over the previous designs. It's a bit less gamer-esque (especially with the light bling disabled), but I agree that it's a bit chunky and uninspired.

Seems to me the alternatives at 17" with Haswells are just the Razer Pro, which has a pretty limited GPU (and no options for customization beyond storage), and maybe the Toshiba Qosmio? The Qosmio is about perfect spec-wise for me but I know very little about its reputation.

Nonsense there are plenty of alternatives, razer would be last on my list... msi alone offers quite a few alternatives, add to those clevo/sagers, Asus, Gigabyte . ^^

Looked up Alienware UK for m17x r5 today. Not impressed by the lowest price option (A ridiculous £1799 for meh specs http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-17/fs).
Went to Dell-Alienware chat and got the absolute base config with absolute base price. So that when you add the upgrades of your choice from there you won't feel robbed.
    See here: Alienware M17X R5

Remember folks to always look for a better price rather than settling for the stock prices shown on the web ;)

I wouldn't even consider the Razer Pro an alternative... Its not a gaming machine, its poor performance will show up badly in next-gen games. The GPU isn't good enough.

Nice price! Wanna ask the same woman how much one with the 780m is?

See this is why it annoys me when people moan about AW prices. Once you have haggled and used codes, you end up with a very aggressive price.

    EDIT:
This shows "Alienware M17x" - The new Alienware which replaces that is simply called "Alienware 17". I'm not sure it's the same machine? Although it DOES say it has Haswell... Confused.

Alienware may have called it Alienware 17 for now but if you look at the price sheet more carefully you can see they are naming M17x R5 on the receipt/invoice.

    I prefer M17x R5. It's less confusing IMO.

I'm wondering if this is WiHD that was an optional card needing a compatible receiver, or the intel version that is already built into the R4 CPU. It only works with the iGPU and uses your wireless LAN to stream. One of ther AW reps recently posted a dell document on seting it up...

    Hopefully that is the case.

Have you spoken to that rep before? I might give her an email about the 18 with SLI 780m.

Just ordered my Alienware 17. Only got 50 bucks off but a gift card also and free 2 day shipping. Could have been better but could have been worse.

First encounter with that sales rep. Was so mad by £1799 I just slammed the Dell chat button and I got some comfort :)

P.S. How do you know it's a "her" ICNMatt?

alienware config showing 4 SSD in raid 0 by taking out the optical bay lol but with 4 SSD, did they improve hardware raid? or only max at around 1.2-1.5 sequential read/write?

£1799 comes with 16 GB Ram not 8GB/ 1080p from 900P the better gfx mid range one and a couple of minor changes than what is expected to be 'Base' on other countries websites.

I really wish dell would hurry up and fix the site, not everyone wants extra ram and extras

Looks like the new M14x weighs 6.6lbs ouch and thicker than the R1/R2 and based on the laptopmag review, it suffers from uncomfortable heat and very loud singe fan noise :(.

You would think Alienware would learn something from what happened in r1/r2 and with a thick chassis and 6.6lbs, you would think they would improved the cooling and make the fan more silent or at least fit in dual cooling fans.

It's getting harder and harder to justify purchasing a m14 over the Razer equivalent if you are in the market for a highly portable gaming laptop. Price maybe the only thing m14 has got over the blade. I seem to recall the blade is fairly costly.

    WOW.

Just saw the pictures from the new M17x and its SO sexy. Rumors were right too. Anodized aluminum and as an extra bonus: Magnesium. No plastic fantastic here. Just pure quality.

    Also new keyboard, MSI style.

Matte screen also confirmed. Although I`m very confused here. Engadget says IPS screen. Dell configurator doesn`t say that, only 300 nit screen. Is it IPS?

Just love the looks on these new notebooks.

Yeah, you're right of course. I am a bit punch drunk after looking at notebook-after-notebook for the last few days. I do wish I remotely liked the style of the MSI's, since those would be a good option.

The Dell Site says 6.12, could that be with the AC adapter?

It would be great if the Alienware salespeople knew something about the systems they are selling. I called 2 of them and they don't know the difference between IPS, TN, and PLS. I'd pull the trigger now if I could confirm an IPS screen.

I doubt the screens are IPS even if the Engadget reporter stated they are. In the Engadget article Dell unveils redesigned Alienware 14, 17 and 18 gaming notebooks, available now from $1,199 (hands-on) they state "they're all IPS screens" for the 17" and 18" which is completely untrue (there is no 120hz IPS consumer grade IPS screen I know of and the 18" is PLS not IPS) which kind of invalidates the authors write up in my mind. The specs below the videos show they are pretty much all TN except for the 18" which I believe to be the correct specifications.

    Display options
    14-inch anti-glare, 200-nit TN display (1,366 x 768)
    14-inch anti-glare, 300-nit TN display (1,920 x 1,080)
    17.3-inch anti-glare, 220-nit TN display (1,600 x 900)
    17.3-inch anti-glare, 300-nit TN display (1,920 x 1,080)
    17.3-inch TrueLife, 400-nit TN display with 3D bundle (1,920 x 1,080)
    18.4-inch TrueLife PLS, 400-nit display (1920 X 1080)
