If there's one thing we can agree on, it's that no matter the potential downsides - and this has to be stressed, there might not be any. We know as Stevie pointed out that Dell have some excellent panels at their disposal - IPS screens will still be a vast improvement over the TN junk (see what I did there? :p) in the current models.

in terms of portability and performance can someone go over m14x and razer 14.

As for the people who dont like the design :) when other ppl buy it and show it off, everything will go back in line :) :D :p

If the alienware has aluminum, will it become hotter than the plastic m17x r4?

the wait till E3 is killing me

i just wanna c the alien fx with winamp and my mind will go to rest :)

We don't know what GPU the M14x will offer, hopefully we will have options but I will admit the 14" Razer is loaded and the GTX 765M will be able to handle most every game at native res fluently, and as for portability it's not even close the Razer will crush it unless AW made the M14x smaller (don't think so) which is another thing we don't know.
The thing that I hated about the M14x R1/R2 were the extremely annoying loud fans, I hope the adressed the issue with this new model.

The thing I dreaded did happen after all -_-"

    Ethernet port on the right?

Right hand users will have their mouse maneuvers restricted with the Ethernet port on the right and the last time I checked the majority are right hand mouse users.

I use Ethernet port 24/7 and Ethernet cable is fat and ugly. So I don't want it just above my mouse. Jeez doesn't the guy who drew up these designs have no common sense!?

From the picture there is enough space for THREE Ethernet ports to be placed on the left. Why the hell did they move it to the right?!

At least MSI's GT60/70s has it at the back.

These new ones look ugly imo. Only thing I like about it is the anodized aluminum and the optional IPS display. Oh and the new CPU and GPU that will be in it of course.

I actually like the new design, but I think it will be easier to like it when you see it in high resolution pictures with decent lighting. The front grills are almost invisible due to low picture quality and the black background.

The new keyboard might actually be a positive upgrade, but I can not really comment upon that before trying the unit myself. I do, however, love the inclusion of IPS and quality materials :) That is always positive. If you do not like IPS, then just choose another screen type when customizing the PC. It is not harder that that, so why use time on whining about an option? You are not forced to select IPS.

E3 can not come soon enough! I am ready to retire the old lappy. He is quite tired. It will certainly be nice to hear about the design choices etc. and the idea behind the new form factor(at least I hope they include that).

You will have to get a wireless mouse :/

At least it's not as bad as sony's old laptop designs a few years back. I remember having a Vaio with pretty hot air blowing out of the heat vents on the right hand side. Thus forcing me to use athe touchpad, or just use a mouse and face third degree burns. :realmad:

But they shouldn't have made the mistake, lets hope these pictures are very old, and they've changed this bit about the 2013 line up

If the new Alienware m14 only has a 750m then that is a complete fail.
The new msi 14" has a 760m and is slimmer, sexier and no doubt cheaper. MSI Global GE40 2OC Dragon Eyes

Definitely a great choice, it would be pretty silly buying the R4 now, since haswell and the new generation of gpus will be out, even though the 8970m vs 7970m anyway. It's exceptionally hard to justify buying a laptop solely on the way it looks, and not taking into account hardware. Also the haswell cpu's seem to provide much longer battery life.

It's usually better buying the newer thing when it comes to tech in general. Just make sure you get warranty and accidental damage, it's really worth it, and dell provide next day, in home support if anything was to go wrong. I would highly recommend choosing the 8970m over the standard gpu, or getting the gtx780m if it's not too much more. You'll find out which one is better for you when the pricing comes out in a week or so (8970m vs gtx780m). The base cpu should be fine and 8gb ram should be more than enough for most people. And make sure you pick a full hd screen, although I'd be surprised if alienware still offer the lower resolution screen.

Alienware fx has many options, and you will surely be able to turn off the touchpad light, along with pretty much every other light. When I watch tv shows at night, I press fn+f11 which turns off Alienware fx, so it goes into dark mode, since it's better to watch tv shows without all the flashy lights.

Really, don't stick with the base gpu, unless you really can't afford it. Since it's expensive upgrading later, and It wasn't that much upgrading to the 7970m from the base gpu when I got my M17x r4 9 months ago. Time really does fly!

Hope the Alienwares can be bought in other colours than silver.
At the moment, from the side, they all look like inverted Oreos.

Buying in black would sort that in a heart beat.
Any news on whether or not the M14x features MXM?

Oh, and also don't underestimate the size of the m17x. The r5 also looks rather thick. I ordered a Swiss Gear messenger laptop bag and then went on holiday. When i came back It was past the return period, and I found that the r4 was too fat to fit inside.

It is about 4.5kg, and don't forget the power supply. In my opinion though, it's definitely worth the effort of carrying it around it you had to though. Just make sure you get a bag that accommodates the "chunky" ones. :p

There isn't a clear picture of the m17x and m18x keyboard. I'm sure a few of those will turn into dislikes. Also when we see the front speakers in greater detail, lots of people will change their mind.
As I said though, it's not an awful design, and I bet it'll grow on people.

Interesting. Did you see the poll on the benyouhui.it link you posted on the first post?

218 people have voted so far.

15 thought it was very good (6.88%)

10 thought it was good (4.59%)

34 thought it was general (I imagine neither good or bad) (15.60%)

11 thought it was bad (5.05%)

148 thought it was very bad (67.89%)

Now that's a whopping statistic that really, really do not like the new design....in fact, only 15 out of 218 people thought it was very good, which is quite shocking.

Hmmm, I don`t know what to think.
It seems most asians hate it, while most from this forum like it. Maybe they are a bit more hardcore Alienware fans than most here? I really don`t know what to say...

I`m sure Dell thought this design through before they started producing it. Can you imagine all the hours they spent on making the final design? Its not like they can ditch it either since this design is what they will be offering for quite some time.
Like Omen says: I`m sure people will change their minds for better and for worse when we get to see the notebooks in full light

That's really a personal preference, some can argue the new AW models don't look as good. Anyway I'm not posting about which laptop scores higher on the sexy scale but give me a decent cheaper laptop that performs better any day, looks aren't everything...at least that's what my MOM told me ;)

Yeah. I am remaining open-minded until we have more info and better images. No point in shooting something down in flames before it's had the chance to show itself for real. At first, I was put off by the loss of the smooth curves of the front grille. I actually like the lid design and the "tram line" effect lighting around the front and sides. I still remain somewhat put off by a big glowing trackpad, but I am sure that AlienFX will come to the rescue of those who don't want certain lighting.

The main thing I am looking forward to is a decent review of the screen. If that is superb, and the rest of the hardware matches suit, I'd likely grow to quite like the new look. Instant impressions, I thought "Hell no" - but that I attribute to a knee-jerk reaction because it does look quite a bit like the shape of Sager/Clevo machines. It almost felt like AW were losing their grip on design aesthetics and going backwards.

Still, like with most things, a somewhat radical rethink on design can cause those accustomed to previous looks to be put off instantaneously. I keep telling myself to give it a chance....I think we all should adopt that attitude, too....at least until the little bleeders have been thoroughly reviewed.

A poll would be a great idea - Cloudfire, get on it dude!! (maybe even a new thread devoted not to discussion, but purely for voting - if the mods will allow for that).

Am I the only one who really wishes that alienware gave the option for a matte screen? I know some people argue that the colours aren't as vibrant, but none of this makes any difference if you get tons of glare during the day. It's better to have a solid picture in my honest opinion. It'll be even worse in July/August with all that glare, and it's just irritating having to block all that light with curtains/blinds.

I know about those matte screen shields, but none of them have really worked for me, and I really can't stand imperfections (bubbles).

Matte is an option. It is what you get no matter what. IPS is the upgrade option you have. Atleast thats what they are saying on the asian site.

So Dell took it a little further:
    Either Matte
Or glossy IPS (instead of just glossy)
    :)

Man, I hope they do a matte IPS option, not just glossy - that would suck big time to wreck a quality panel with a plexi cover....that'd be like making a champagne cocktail with vinegar (it might look nice a bubbly, but it WILL leave a nasty taste in your mouth :p)

Damn, they know how to make the choice hard! I'm 100% sure I won't be upgrading to the r5. I might get an SSD and more ram though, but the effort of a fresh install is beyond me currently. Hope they have a great matte screen for the r6! The screen is still quite decent on the r4, but I really miss my xps's IPS RGB LED screen. Just the screen though I swear, the rest of that POS was awful!

Well I have no idea if the IPS is glossy or not. Just thinking out loud :)

I know matte and IPS is the options we will have.

If I remember it correctly, google translate said this.
    "IPS screen - Matte optional"

I was not considering AW because of overly flashy look, but it is now an equal contestant with Asus G750. I will pass on Clevo because of cooling is no longer good enough for new generation of power-sucking heat-generating CPU/GPU.
The quality of the screen will play a big role in decision making and IPS matte or glossy is an extra points for the AW.
If AMD 8970M will be an option in future, I will take it over expensive Nvidia 780M. now, wait and save the money.

Well, the last few posts seem to indicate a possible reason behind Dells change in design - maybe a smart market move by Dell - muscle in and/or take some Clevo/Sager/other customers away from their brand, when otherwise, they would not have considered AW before because of current/past design. If that was intentional by Dell, it's a savvy move. I just hope it doesn't backfire on them when their loyal fanbase jump ship because Alienware seems to be becoming more and more like it's competitors with the new design.

There are lots of people, myself included, who bought the last revisions (and previous ones, too) based on the fact that Alienware WAS different and unique looking, with it's curves and somewhat futuristic looks. Now that those looks seem to have been really cut back on, and all of the new range look more "boxy and mainstream", they (Dell) may find that they lose more customers than they gain. Imagine if Bugatti decided to make their cars look like Honda's. I doubt that many potential buyers would remain loyal....no disrespect intended to other notebook owners.

Heck, if I wanted my laptop to "look like" a Sager or an Asus, I would have bought a Sager or an Asus. I didn't need Dell to effectively only offer me the option of buying a "look-a-likey".....

The change in design is a pity and possibly misguided, but if a decline in quality doesn't accompany it, I'll continue to consider Alienware.

A bit disappointed by the new m14x.
I don't understand why Dell keeps putting ODD on a sub 15" notebook! I would have loved a 2nd HDD option.
Performance wise it will be on par with the new razer blade 14" which imo looks way better. I really hope they will offer better than a 765m!

Yeah, I agree. As an existing customer, and with aesthetics to one side, if the hardware, cooling and build quality are all spot on, I'd probably end up with one - especially given previous experiences with Dell and warranty support, which is second to none IMHO.

Might as well have an Alienware that looks like any of the other few "comparable" options than buy one of those alternatives and lose the support etc...probably the lesser of two evils LOL.

Have you guys noticed that the AW facebook page are showing old models of the desktop and laptops based on timeline? I think they are gonna reveal the new systems soon.

If the prices are not reasonable I would probably this time try a sager / clevo though, I do not trust sager systems on their 'reliability'... They are already selling those systems with 780M for about $1700. If Alienware comes up with their 17" and 780M at 2300-2500 I may say bye for now to them (Or I have to wait probably 3-4 months longer to get that kind of a discount).

I'm actually quite content with the boxy look-It reminds me of the classic Alienwares before Dell took over. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the old 7700m's and 7900m's, whatever they were called, all boxy in shape, and quite like this new revision in terms of looks?

I'm glad Dell is taking a step back and reviving Alienware's classic designs. As I was still a kid back then, overpriced non-Dellienware Alienwares were way out of my price range, and it's cool to have a chance to own something remotely close to my dream laptop back in the days!

Haha, yeah - you mean this, right? Alienware Aurora m7700 Review & Rating | PCMag.com

Funny, the front grille on the new line up is quite reminiscent of days gone by. Gone are the sleek lines of the current speaker grille, replaced by something more like the older Aliens - minus all the buttons at the front. Check out that price tag LOL.

Haha bang on there Stevie! See how similar the chassis' are??

Also, I don't see why people are complaining about the new series resembling Clevo chassis'. Alienware HISTORICALLY WERE BASED OFF OF CLEVO's! If anything, people should be happy the real ALIENWARE IS BACK!
