I think all AW's have been boxes, just the previous ones have been more "trapazoid" than the new ones, but the pictures are too dark to get a good look . Still I think the new lid looks great, and they don't look too much like the new sager/clevo's like people are claiming: clevo-p177sm.jpg

I paid the extra £200 to go from 660 > 7970 as it seemed the best value for money. however ill see what ends up being the best bang for your 'buck' on the r5

Also I think the cooling will be better than clevo's. Just look at the airflow they will have going on the M14x:

Looking at that bottom cover again, is it possible that they are doing away with custom nameplate covers? I don't see an indentation space where it would be expected to be. There also appear to be visible screws, but that has been that way for all of the notebooks apart from the M18x line, right? If not, they may be abandoning even more unique Alienware standbys than just the design, which would be a shame.

Well the R2 which was aluminium actually weighed about 1 Kg more than the R3 which was plastic. I know you can't please everyone but if this weighs 1 Kg more than the R4 I will be keeping my R4. At least for a while longer.

Given the option I would buy a matte screen.

But the R3/R4 is a single GPU machine which replaced the M15x. The M17x R1/R2 was replaced by the M18x. Aluminium is not the only factor here.

The thick bottom screen bezel looks extremely thick especially on the M14x which from my non profesional opinion seems like it will be bigger than your average 14" laptop sort of like the old model. Now I can be completly wrong but that's the way I see it.

I`ve read a lot of people not happy with the design of the Alienware ,but i must say im changing my m18xR2 for the r3 any day..

I just love the design. It is a bit more private. Still "gaming" design ,but a bit more professional.

I must say i love it and i will do whatever is needed to obtain one :D

Oh my, just realized the power jack is now on the left of the laptop. What's with this ridiculous design alteration! The Ethernet port was fine on the left, and the power jack is best put on the back of the laptop so it doesn't get in the way, and is hidden.

I wonder if they intend to make it an angled adapter having the port at the side there.

I was wondering the same, too. I actually don't mind the side jack, it actually means that those who keep the machine on a desktop, square on to a wall, can seat the machine further back without worrying about fouling the current power input configuration. Of course, having a right angled jack on the end of the PSU is gonna have to be a prerequisite, IMHO.

Yes these are renderings, the materials and feel of the machine are important to their real life look.

It wouldn't be intrusive if the jack is 'L' shaped. It'll also be more convenient to remove and it'll lower the chances of people jerking the jack/adaptor off because its location is more noticeable.

I would guess that the adaptor plug won't be an 'L' shape.
If it was, then the wire could go along the direction of the side lights that have been introduced, covering them or blocking their view a bit.

I guess it's dependent on where you place the laptop / your own desk. Mine is pretty much on the edge of my desk, with lots of room behind it. I do use the space to my left and right side of my laptop. hence why I find the ports are perfectly positioned on the r4. In fact, I wouldn't have minded the ethernet port being at the back, as well as at least one usb port for the mouse. But they're on the left so they're not that intrusive.

As long as the people who are buying this revision are happy, I don't mind. I'm not upgrading yet anyway.

The power jack seems to be positioned right at the end so I don't think that'll be much of a problem.

Yup agree completely. While the old design is probably more unique looking, it is far more cheesy and toylike. Maybe I'm just getting older but it appealed more to me a couple years back than it does now.

You mean the speaker/light gaps in the front ? Well looks like the speakers are were most laptops have.

About the charging. Maybe its wireless :D. Will just have to wait a bit more for a real picture. The M14 in the leaked picture look nice.

Nope. Different strokes for different folks I guess. The front "vents" and keyboard on the previous gen ruins it for me. It looked great when I was a few years younger but I rather something a little more discrete looking with great build quality right now. No longer keen on something that screams attention. New revision will just about tick every box in terms of what I'm looking for in a 17" laptop (aluminium, discrete, solid keyboard, single 780m, local service depot etc).

The only problem with that is if you read the output from the apple chargers a gaming laptop would completely dry those in a heartbeat especially if you do any kind of over locking.

If the 14 inch has FHD IPS, I'm picking it up in a heartbeat! Hopefully they don't have it ride along with the M17/18 with that IPS display. If 15 in laptops can have top GPU's I'm sure the same can be for the M14x.

Alienware seems to be playing the "best for last" card, if they are, it better be the BEST!

Putting a 780m in the m14x, considering how thick it is, doesn't seem as something impossible imo. The only problem I see is for the m17x sales. Putting the same gpu in the 2 laptops may not be the best commercial strategy...

I only hope we can choose something better than the 765m in the m14x. The new razer has the same gpu but is a LOT thinner so I think it's reasonable to ask for more on this one :)
