I do not think Desiree means the M17, but an Nvidia 790i Chipset motherboard from AW.

Never mind bad form. They could (and should) get sued for refusing to help him when the product they have sold is clearly not working as advertised.

Just talked to someone over at Alienware and he checked and said that there still is no word about the 4850's being offered as upgrades. I asked him when I should check back in and he said he didn't know exactly. He sounded positive about it but he couldn't really say when it would all be resolved.

Not very helpful but thought I'd let people know that as of today nothing has been worked out yet.

Marshall, what did the cards cost you that they sent you? Just curious what they're aprox. looking to cost.

    try crysis on very high

    then cry

They are good cards but they are not excellent cards, saying they can play anything at 50fps or higher is asking for trouble

If I remember rightly they cost him about £325.

Yeah, what he said. (They are actually excellent cards, in fact they have been shown to be the equivelant of 280Ms...can't remember where I saw that though, but it was definite with evidence)

They will still handle any game out there. You'll still be playing Crysis on very high, but not at 1920x1200 without slowdowns at times.

I am getting SO tired of people talking about 5000 series cards like they will be out next month....

They are not even out on desktops yet. It took about 8 months for the Mobile 4k series after the desktop versions came out. People seem to forget that the mobile series always LAGS behind the desktops series.....

Word is the new ATI cards will be released in mobile form first. I say I'll believe it when I see it.

TSMC can't seem to get enough yield to get 4870's out now so I don't know why people think the 5xxx's will magically appear....

You mean 4770 or 4830/4860. There's no yield problems with 4870s. Also reports are that the 40-nm process has been improved....but that's still to be seen.

The reason why people think the 5000 series cards are due is because it's what news sites have been reporting based on ATI's announcements....which includes a demo event of their new DX11 GPUs being held by ATI on September 10th.

    http://wccftech.com/2009/08/19/amd-demo-directx-11-ati-radeon-5000-series-gpus-coming-september-10/

What's been talked about is not just Evergreen desktop parts but also several mobile parts codenamed Manhattan.

Yeah I'm kinda disappointed with them also. When I called and asked about the cards last week, a lady with broken english said they were available so I ordered them. When I got the email confermation they were for desktops! So I spent about an hour trying to cancel the damn order getting transfered around and around. Also she had my shipping and billing address wrong.

so I called AW today just to see if I could get lucky and mybe order the 4850s...
they said no bc the card is short supply and only used for new orders right now.
but the guy might have been ignorant, but he also told me that the the motherboard had to be altered or something like that because the 4850 they use is actually a desktop card.
can this really be true??? if so, can we go buy the 4850 cards for desktops for cheap and install them some how???
this doesnt sound right to me, but I just wanted to see what ya'll thought...

Yeah. Their tech support is really hit or miss sometimes. For example I asked a tech 2 days ago if there was any difference with the new M17's with the 4850's other then the cards and he said no. I think AW is in desperate need of sitting down with their techs and having a meeting. The different stories they tell are pretty incredible.

Here's how I did it, ordered the wife a new laptop so I'm putting the 4850's in mine and my old ones in her's. Replacing her old Gateway with this one. She's excited and so am I :D

well i have been saying for a long time that AW suck with thier CS, if you can order a new machine and get what you want that is great and they are good for that.

However if you want an after purchase upgrade EVEN if they say its available its a nightmare

Thier RMA procedure is crazy as well, just ask Alex...

Yeah I'll be gutted if its not the cards simply because it\'ll take that much longer to get fixed. If its the mobo thats gone well that simply needs ship back for replacement and BIOS or no BIOS the mobo is stuffed and cant be used or tested; no worries for me there; just the whole damn time scale of the thing!

Bit of a nightmare, but what can I do. Not like I can go and get a cheap 20 quid card to test with like a desktop unit heh.

The laptop fails to boot... after freezing with a black screen and looping audio stutter, pretty major issue haha

Through the rigamarole; once got a distorted bios screen on an external monitor, removing the primary GPU managed to get a beep code from the mobo, however since then its just been resetting itself once power is applied, since reseating the card, so its either a mobo or a gpu fault. Trying GPUs first because of the beep code, and am hoping once we can get new GPUs a simple BIOS reset should fix it, if it doesnt then the mobo is knackered and i have to send the machine back for mobo replacement, which by thier admission could take 3-6 weeks. Unfortunately AW have taken best part of 2 weeks by the sound of it even to despatch the cards. All fun and games.
