Sorry to hear about all that man. I've played the waiting game with AW before. They act like they are sending a replacemtent part and then after the patience has worn out after a few weeks you have to call in and ask to speak with a supervisor even to find out that they haven't had basic parts like Optical drives in to ship. Things only really happen after speaking to a supervisor I've found.

Hope that gets sorted soon for you.

I recon its the GPU's, i had the issue all the time with the 4850 (it'd boot) but changing theme, trying to game and multi monitor would completely hardwarecrash my pc to the black screen and it'd just do nothing, except sit there black.

Welp, my wife's laptop shipped out today and once I get that I'll swap out the vid cards :D For the guys that changed out their vid cards, did you have to reinstall video drivers for the 4850's? I'm pretty stoked about this, can't wait

You'll need to reinstall the drivers :)
Just get a 9.8 hotfix version pre-modded and ready and you're good to install :)

Thanks Alex. So with the pre-modded ones will I have to do the mobility mod thingy or just the standard drivers from ATI?

Download the 9.8 Hotfix Vista 64 drivers, then run mobility modder on them (with UAC off). As soon as you swapover the cards you can then run your modded drivers from the setup in the 9.8 Hotfix directory :)

Basically by pre-modded I meant pre-prepared by yourself.

Oh god Frozen.......I bet your well chuffed!

It angers me knowing that I will probably never see these cards in my machine and that people like yourself have to go to extreme measures to get their upgrade that we are all desperate for.

    Enjoy it pal.

Wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if the whole machine disappeared before christmas, they seem to have ditched Skullcap and 1440x900 LCD from the UK site now. I'm reckoning they want to force the vastly overpriced m17x on us by removing the other options :(

Meh, much as its a nice machine, the M17x is vastly overpriced even in comparison to the competitors in the UK, unless you can get a good Dell discount code; so if they do that they will kill 99% of thier UK mid-performance market dead.
Unless Dell UK/Europe want to kill off Alienware here, that would be a really foolish move.

Ouch, yeah when you go from the Dell site to look at the Alienware and XPS section it's only mention of the M17x until you go on the actual Alienware site. :(

They still have the 4850 header graphic in the gpu 'customisation' option:
    http://image.alienware.com/images/configurator_images/M17/uk/gpu_ati_3870_crossFirex.jpg

Damn, I could have sworn I saw 4850's just a few weeks ago on the site, had I known I would have grabbed one.

yeah, i remember seeing the m17 with 4850s a long time ago.

what im wondering, since i havent been on the forums for awhile, is if theyre actually shipping the 4850s to 3870 owners now or not?

im convinced dell screwed up the uk/eu market with the m17x

for alot cheaper you can get the clevo which is in basics the same machine, esp as we have a confirmed unlocked bios coming

Is there any word on when they'll be sold as an upgrade? This madness has got me thinking of just taking it up the tailpipe and selling my M17/3870 combo only to buy another with the 4850s. Damn.

Such drastic action is unnecessary. As much as I want the 4850's, the m17 is still a ridiculously good laptop. This is my first 'gaming' laptop having come from a Dell e1505 and I am nothing but pleased with it.

This will easily hold me over for 2+ years or until they can cram an i7 and two video cards into a 17" chassis (that day will be a glorious one).

I had considered that myself but the numbers just dont add up and your much better off moving to a different machine all together at that point . Maybe someday they will be available to the existing owners is still the best we can hope for .

There's always new tech on the horizon. I bought this M17 on November 3rd, the day it debuted. Then the M17x hit, then the M17/4850 hit. I'd probably always have the newest tech, but these damn laptops are as much as used cars.

Question Turbo, when you got your QX9300 and put Zfactors bios, did that help with the stuttering? I'm thinking about getting the QX93000, I already have the .28bios

Funny that you should ask. I bought the QS QX9300 about six months ago, and had NO stutter whatsoever. One day a month or two ago it started. I can't remember doing anything differently. I don't believe it's a hardware issue. My northbridge never gets above 70C. I monitor my temps whenever I game. There was another thread talking about using RMclock to stop the stuttering. I never got any relief from it. Somewhere else mentioned using FSB to raise the PCI frequency. This has helped a ton. Nothing has eliminated it completely though. And it sucks. Funny thing is that it came from nowhere. If the two core CPU's don't suffer from this, I'd just get an X9100 and OC the hell out of it with Z's BIOS. Someday someone will find out exactly what causes it. I'm sure it's a software issue somewhere though.

Holy Crap!! What the hell is AW doing?! Now they aren't even an option at all when we know they are available! Someone who knows someone on the inside at AW needs to seriously investigate what the hell is going on!

I guess the next question is where else can one buy the 4850's. I feel like there is going to be a very interesting black market for these cards. LOL.
