I wonder if there is a way to get the 4850s through MSI and have them work in the M17. Anyone know if that would work?

Overall, whatever AW reason's where for handling the cards the way they did I have to say I think it is pretty craptastic on their part.

Thats it, im so tired of the AW run around, they should have gotten tons of stock, they didn't, they should have released them as upgrades, they didn't, they should have done a lot of things and they haven't. I'm supportive of AW to release new gpu's for old laptops, however im soooo disappointed in them, and you know what? This is a really bad experience for me since im a first time AW customer.

Some will say, oh, you shouldn't be upset because its one small part of their service. It is however A HUGE part of their service. I don't want to deal with AW again, this kind of bs drives customers from their service and Dell needs to shape things up in their management so this kind of thing stops happening "we have them, maybe not, soon though, wait a second, just not for the UK, oh nvm not for the U.S either SORRY BUY OUR NEW MORE EXPENSIVE LINE WITH THE PROMISE OF UPGRADABILITY, BUT WE WILL PROBABLY TRY TO SCROOGE YOU OUT OF THAT AS WELL, HAVE FUN!" $#@$!$#@%$@!!!!!

ooo you sound like i did 3 months ago when i ditched mine :p

    Clevo ftw

Alienware have trashed thier rep here and anyone in europe who knows anything about computers will just ignore them from now on

Problem is the poor people who just click on the site and buy without checking out thier rep

The M17 had a good price in Europe one month ago, but after they started to remove components and now is not anymore a good choice (Illuminated keyboard only German or France).

The M17X in Europe were always too expensive , while in America is much cheaper.

If the next M15X will be cheap and good enough, I'll think about it, otherwise W860 FTW!! Pity Clevo NB doesn't look good as Alienware ones :(

Without the 4850s or 70s the m17 is very dated and should sell for dirt cheap.

Could it be that they removed the 4850 to go with a 5XXX solution in the near future? Lower heat? Or maybe they just dont have a good stock in right now because everyone wants them?

MSI does not sell the 4850 by its self.. so there will be no chance of getting it from MSI..

I have to agree. It's really too bad though. With AW being Dell you get good economy of scale when it comes to priceing because or the size of part orders they can make but Dell alwasy seems to be the kiss of death when it comes to customer experience. I had a Dell for my first computer and it doesn't seem like much has changed since then.

    Nope

The MXM 2.1 slot is what will limit the GPU of the M17. The 4850's are almost certainly the best card you will ever have for it (for crossfire that is, for single card you can get a GTX 280m in the master slot - there is a MXM 2.1 version from the clevo)

It makes me chuckle a little when people say that the M17 is so dated now. Correct me if im wrong but it the exact same Montevina platform as the M17X so the only great difference is the GPU's. And lets face it approx 10-15% increase over a M17 w 4850's. Now that really is not a big difference in machines in anyones book.

Aye pretty much, more like 10% difference with the 280s too which cost a lot more. The cooling and lack of MXM3, plus quad issues are all that let the M17 down, its not that dated at all in the scheme of things .

Yeah, that made me chuckle too. As an M17 owner, yeah, I realize that my 6 month old laptop is no longer the absolute latest thing, but I think 'dated' is a pretty strong word for my system; it still performs very well!

    lol...

it is sooo dated guys, for some reason i cant even play games at lowest settings? instead i have to put them all the way on highest, and man it works solid.

    wait, that was a joke.

and what is with people saying it has heating issues? I used mine in the middle of the desert Africa and it didnt overheat. Maybe the new thing is to play in a furnace?

Ya the M17 has good cooling. The only shortcoming is that the 2 GPUs share a fan and set of fins, but it still keeps up well.

My point was mainly that the GPU roadmap is at its end for the M17 and at the very beginning for the M17x (all that is "dated" is the MXM slot, not the cards or system as a whole - it is still a great laptop)

I am actually going to try to convince my mom to get one to replace her 17" HP that is dying (after 3 years use, not a POS like everyone says - great machine)

For $1k (which she would willingly spend much more than) the base M17 is an AWESOME laptop....she doesn't need it for 3d gaming, but that aside....it is just a steal really

for me, the trick was having a Cryo, and holes in the bottom cover (or just removing it)

Here is what I had my whitebook idle'ing at with my modifications

the max temps in my pic above were after a few back to back runs of vantage, which runs hotter than alot of games (but not crysis) just to give a reference point of what the cooling can accomplish with some modification

I do have to say, it is very odd that I've seen very few stutters for a month now. Whenever I do, all I do is yank out the AC power and plug it back in and it stops instantly. And I've never had it happen on battery power so...that's not a problem.

I just checked the alienware.com page to see the new products.
That was when i noticed that the M17x (at least the nebula red) has now a crossfire with 4870s !!!
Why can't the M17 get them, but the M17x...that sucks pretty bad, don't you think?

M17 = Discontinued. 4870's is MXM 3.0, M17 has an MXM 2.1 socket thats why.

I asked again for possible GPU upgrades and this is what i got as reply:

"We apologize for the fact the Upgrade is no longer available.

The M17 System has reached end of life period. The Upgrade you request was only available until end of July. We hope you can understand this fact as the system will no longer be produced."

When i contacted them in June they informed me they did not have any upgrades at all, and now i get this bs.

Just tell them the truth-that they offered it as an upgrade but cancelled any upgrade orders and so you never managed to upgrade. If they tell you that they didn't cancel the orders then tell them that they are blatantly lying to you.

It's kinda funny because when i demanded to have my case escalated i was contacted by an Alienware Escalations Specialist and this is only a part of his email but the most amusing bit:

"Considering the fact, that the upgrade was available the whole lifetime of the M17, apart from August and September(where the M17 stopped being produced)"

Wait...what?? The upgrade was available the whole lifetime of the M17??? I guess i missed that part?

    Buncha freaking liars...

If you could take legal action against them for telling a blatant lie that'd be good. Perhaps they actually WOULD release the 4850s then. And I have to say, if you get the 4850s released you will be hailed well and truly as a hero on these forums.

Ive forwarded on my E-mails to Alienware regarding the 4850s to DELL in the hope of getting them involved.
I actually did not know that the M17 had been out for only a year....that makes it even worse that we were not given an upgrade option.

The worst part of this news for me is I sold the wife into letting me get a M17, fully loaded, about 6 months ago with the sales pitch of "Yes, honey, it's an awful lot of money for a laptop, but it's totally upgradable! this thing'll be around for a long time, and I'll be able to upgrade it, so i won't have to spend big buckas again on a new one, i'll just upgrade the existing one! It'll be great!"

    I guess I didn't realize when I said "It'll be around for a long time" I meant less than 6 months.... :(

Alienware made promises they could not keep. Whatever happened to the AW rep's that used to be on this board? If they are still here they need to get their $#!@ together and fix this.

Does anyone else feel like AW is trying to call our bluff? Like they think if they don't offer the 4850's we will have to buy their new laptop? So instead of making 500 bucks per, they make over 2400? However, they overestimated their fan base, people are only going to be loyal so far, and if they think a company is known for decieving its customers they will move to another brand, and atm AW has a lot of competitors, I wouldn't take the chance if I was in charge at AW.

    me too guys;

we all promised ourselves and others that we will get long life from these notebooks but only 6 months down the line they are looking outdated GPU wise.

Lets keep hammering away and see if we can sort something out.

Ive heard some many say that Alienware dont have to provide and upgrade path and I agree this is true but we spend more on these type of notebooks with this feature in mind knowing it is possible and especially as the machine was only on sale for less than a year, out of good decency we should have been given the option.
