So are you not going to upgrade them rob?
-
-
How much would it cost for me to send AW my m17, and get the 4850s?
-
Julian -
hmm does this mean that you cant self upgrade?
bummer for us that done "after market upgrades" -
Jup
sb said he will recive them in some weeks and can put them it by himself.
Greetings
Julian -
i hope we can self upgrade or i have to fit my p8600 and install AW bios
-
We just have to careful now guys as it seems that the procedure is different depending on what side of the pond you live.
Im hanging back for a bit....remembering what happened to Pmanuk before. Although I was surprised to open my wage slip today and realise I could probably afford them at a squeeze....a squeeze being starving for a month!
Good luck guys and keep on posting all these tit-bits from Alienware....excellent thread IMHO. -
it is and the guy who created it
-
yeah thats why i am erring on the side of caution, once a few people have actually received the cards at home and doing the upgrades i will consder ordering
-
-
aluminium pwns all
-
-
And you're right. I will have my wife send me the new cards if A.W. will sell just the cards. Being without my computer just isn't an option when I'm out there. The four walls in my room just wouldn't cut it without my rig. -
Man 6-12 months that has to be rough stuff .
What kind of internet do you get out there ?.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Not the best. I work for the DOD agency that is in charge of the whole defense network. They mostly got satellite uplinks, not even fiber.
But we are working on that, because we love our service members so muchand know that they need to game with the R and R
-
Well i guess some is better then none that is for sure.
So even on some Battleship out in the middle of nowhere you have access to the web ?. -
hes a Faker for sure -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Absolutely. Satellite uplinks.
Why would I lie about this? It is not an exciting job lol
Look up Defense Information Systems Agency. I work in GE341 -
Thanks again for the info -

Np, our director is actually a Read Admiral (3 star) haha.
I know the ships get internet, I cant say who gets to use it though. Probably not exactly wireless for anyone with a laptop lol
Anything else you like to add LordVader?? -
They "open a gateway" 3 or 4 times a day and that's when everything comes in and goes out via satellite.
There are a couple terminals that are always open but the speed is like dial up and a huge amount of sites are inaccessible. They wouldn't want anyone looking at p*rn. Also for security reasons.
Hey scook9, I see you're in Va. I've spent a lot of time at Little Creek in the past. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
oh that's not fair to you.
but what is the best way to contact you then. email. -
Wow that has to be very rough then .
No web for that amount of time could make a person go crazyor atleast me it would .
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Only been down to the southern part once to visit friends at VT - and drive through on way to OBX. Its nice though, I am a NoVa person haha. When I want mountains I head over to WVA - we got a house there.
-
I'll let ya know just before I head out in a couple weeks.
@Quad, you have no Idea how bad it is!If it was an option I'd pay $500 bucks a month for internet service. So would a lot of other guys. I've got my own room but it's a room with four walls and nowhere to go for a month at a time. My laptop and projector helps keep my sanity.
@scook9, I thought you were at the base in Va. Little Creek is the special operations part of the base near by. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
me to. i would be angry if i couldn't go online. i have alot of stuff that i do on it.
good luck but i'm proud that you can do that. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you would think they would just give you a permanent .mil address
-
Na, I work on several Navy ships and they always change it up on us.
Here is part of my last address: [email protected]
Before you mention it, I'm not MSC but they factor into the contract with the Navy on these specific ships.
I'll have to have my wife send me the cards when we are in port. -
Click a Pic of just the View from where you are & upload -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
A pic? Like the building I work at? The government kind of frowns on that lol, I cant even give you the street address. We have to use PO boxes haha
Why all the hate? -
Calm down buddy just kidding -
so uh...anybody want to setup an outreach program to hook up OCZ/whitebook owners with some 4850s?
-
-
You have to be an M17 owner with all the info to back it up , otherwise its a no go.
-
i technically still own an m17, lol. but not sure if i want to sepnd the money and risk selling online.
-
It would probably take you all of 12 seconds to sell them online .
Not sure how much mark up though you could charge to make it worth your time.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
it is worth it. i would do the same(after i tested them first in my unit lol)
-
Ive sent Alienware UK an E-mail asking whats the score with the 4850s....will post back here with the response.
I only ask because it still seems strange that some customers in the US are being asked to send in their notebooks meanwhile some European customers are just being sent the cards.....confusion still surrounds this 4850 upgrade in the M17.
Im definitely getting the upgrade and think its worth every penny. -

Well they're definately available to order with a new machine, not sure as a part though, would be interesting to hear. Very tempted to order.
As a quick aside, does anyone know what Alienware's attitude to upgrading parts is? Is this model fairly easy to access, I'd be interested in buying a weaker version with the dual 4850, then upgrading the CPU and RAM myselfWould they still cover the machine if you kept the original parts etc?
Still very expensive though, and the weight puts me off a little, was hoping to get something lighter, like the MSI GT725...the dual GPU tempts me so though! -
Seriously!
Is there any reason these wouldn't work in an OCZ/whitebook? -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
You broke them
-
lol, I can give them a call on Monday and see what they say. Its worth a shot. Even if i break even someone will make out.
-
there is no reason, but AW wont sell them to you unless you have the model number of the laptop
without being an AW customer they simply wont sell them to you
im so glad i didnt get the DIY kit
although if we have to send the laptops in, i could b in trouble -
-
i need to reflash the bios...again...just send me the cards i will do it and i wont use cheapass paste
would have to take the machine apart when i get it back to put AS5 on it anyway -
The 4850 is available on the UK website. Anyone want to sell me there secondary card and crossfire cable? Not going to bother with the 4850's dont game that much, so if any whitebook owner wants them...

How much of a bottleneck will i have with 4850x2 and p8400 ?
or is it still better 3870x2 and t94/600 as a whole ? -
Well just to let you all know I have now got the tracking number for my 4850's from AW. Only pain in the arse is they are going to my other house down south so gonna need to then get them sent to me, oh well. Also obviously now have a couple of 3870's clearly needing a good new home!!!
4850's Finally out for the m17
