How much would it cost for me to send AW my m17, and get the 4850s?

We just have to careful now guys as it seems that the procedure is different depending on what side of the pond you live.
Im hanging back for a bit....remembering what happened to Pmanuk before. Although I was surprised to open my wage slip today and realise I could probably afford them at a squeeze....a squeeze being starving for a month!

Good luck guys and keep on posting all these tit-bits from Alienware....excellent thread IMHO.

Yes, but with great disappointment, I have to wait till I get back home from my next 6-12 month tour of duty. If I can still get them then I will, so I can upgrade my M9750 with the 3870's and the M17 with the 4850's. I imagine by then it will be time to get the next 17" model after the M17x. At least my kids will end up with decent performing rigs. lol

Ah ok, I thought it might've been possible to receive them through some sort of mobile mail carrier service you guys have out there that your wife could send to you in a package (wherever "out there" is for you ATM ;P). I only have buds in the marines and the army so I'm not sure how that all works on a ship.

It's likely the same place I'm going and have been going for the last several years ie Persian Gulf region.

And you're right. I will have my wife send me the new cards if A.W. will sell just the cards. Being without my computer just isn't an option when I'm out there. The four walls in my room just wouldn't cut it without my rig. :p

Not the best. I work for the DOD agency that is in charge of the whole defense network. They mostly got satellite uplinks, not even fiber.

But we are working on that, because we love our service members so much ;) and know that they need to game with the R and R

I know the ships get internet, I cant say who gets to use it though. Probably not exactly wireless for anyone with a laptop lol

I don't get internet out there. We do get to send and receive e-mail though.

They "open a gateway" 3 or 4 times a day and that's when everything comes in and goes out via satellite.

There are a couple terminals that are always open but the speed is like dial up and a huge amount of sites are inaccessible. They wouldn't want anyone looking at p*rn. Also for security reasons.

Hey scook9, I see you're in Va. I've spent a lot of time at Little Creek in the past. ;)

Ya, I've got to send an e-mail first though because there is a different address every deployment. It's really long and drawn out too. I have to write it down for myself every time I go out.

I'll let ya know just before I head out in a couple weeks.

@Quad, you have no Idea how bad it is!If it was an option I'd pay $500 bucks a month for internet service. So would a lot of other guys. I've got my own room but it's a room with four walls and nowhere to go for a month at a time. My laptop and projector helps keep my sanity.

@scook9, I thought you were at the base in Va. Little Creek is the special operations part of the base near by.

Na, I work on several Navy ships and they always change it up on us.

Here is part of my last address: [email protected]

Before you mention it, I'm not MSC but they factor into the contract with the Navy on these specific ships.

I'll have to have my wife send me the cards when we are in port.

It would probably take you all of 12 seconds to sell them online .

Not sure how much mark up though you could charge to make it worth your time :).

Ive sent Alienware UK an E-mail asking whats the score with the 4850s....will post back here with the response.
I only ask because it still seems strange that some customers in the US are being asked to send in their notebooks meanwhile some European customers are just being sent the cards.....confusion still surrounds this 4850 upgrade in the M17.
Im definitely getting the upgrade and think its worth every penny.

Well they're definately available to order with a new machine, not sure as a part though, would be interesting to hear. Very tempted to order.

As a quick aside, does anyone know what Alienware's attitude to upgrading parts is? Is this model fairly easy to access, I'd be interested in buying a weaker version with the dual 4850, then upgrading the CPU and RAM myself :) Would they still cover the machine if you kept the original parts etc?

Still very expensive though, and the weight puts me off a little, was hoping to get something lighter, like the MSI GT725...the dual GPU tempts me so though!

Is there any reason these wouldn't work in an OCZ/whitebook?

there is no reason, but AW wont sell them to you unless you have the model number of the laptop

without being an AW customer they simply wont sell them to you

im so glad i didnt get the DIY kit

although if we have to send the laptops in, i could b in trouble :p

I was thinking about that myself

How much of a bottleneck will i have with 4850x2 and p8400 ?
or is it still better 3870x2 and t94/600 as a whole ?

Well just to let you all know I have now got the tracking number for my 4850's from AW. Only pain in the arse is they are going to my other house down south so gonna need to then get them sent to me, oh well. Also obviously now have a couple of 3870's clearly needing a good new home!!!
