i agree electro my only point was that nvida been lazy and not really done anything to the G92 core, they could have been miles ahead of ATI but they chose not to

Thanks Evilcorsair for clearing up the UK - US pricing.

I think your question about whether we will also receive the crossfire X cable in order to sell on our cards is a very good one....anybody?

I wouldn't say that 4870s are a reason to sell a laptop and buy a new one, especially if it's getting 4850s. Not enough of a gain in my opinion.

I highly doubt a new bios is needed. But the crossfire cable question is a good one indeed.

lol well...you really know why else I'm waiting? Two words, red chassis. I'm as superficial as much as I'm concerned with performance, and the M17x looks superior IMO. Don't get me wrong I'm not the knocking the M17, best laptop I ever owned, and this is great news for you guys.

Is it just me or is a m17 with dual 4850s significantly more expensive than a similarly equipped M17x?

It is a bit more expensive yes...

I think the reason for this though is that they know for the most part people aren't going to be buying M17's unless they are refurbished... they are expecting people the buy the cards to put into thier M17's... and people will pay top dollar for that

I doubt this. If they expected their primary return to be selling the cards aftermarket, they'd advertise this and have them for sale in the gear shop. But they didn't.

yea your right lol... the main market doesn't consist of a bunch of nerd like us here... but people are still paying top top dollar for those cards ~280m's in their older laptops.... that I don't understand

Aside from memory, it's higher voltage for the 4870, hence higher clocks.

Ok a tad hard to believe with a X9100 and stock 3870? My 06 scores with an x9100 and 3870s are in my sig.

    OC on the x9100?

That score is very high, and is that at 1280x1024?

Because unless I misunderstand, he is saying that's a score with stock cpu and stock gpu.

I OC'd both heavily to get my score haha.

Sorry I misspelled, darn night shift. It was 14004 with stock speeds. When I oc'd the cpu to 3.3 I got about 14800 on 1280x1024

Hey dondadah, whats going on? Yeah just been trolling for a while till I saw we're getting the 4850's. How are things?

That still seems way too high a score for stock CPU and GPUs with an x9100.....considering the top stock scores for qx9300 are right at 14k, and the CPU score is MUCH higher for them.

And the core and shader clocks are 50MHz higher on the 4870. (both @ 550MHz instead of 500MHz)

£325? That's not bad at all. I can't wait until I can order mine!

Do you know if they're including a new crossfire cable, and what about thermal paste? (presumably we need to buy new thermal paste ourselves)

But considering they're sending them out...M9750 owners are about to go as nuts as we are. ;)

I forgot to ask about the SLI cable. Judging by the order notice there is not one included. He did say when I first ordered that I had to purchase thermal paste from them for £1 otherwise they would not sell me the cards. Just explained I use Arctic Cooling MX-2 and they were happy with that.

Well i have problem with my BlueRay Player
so they will lookinto it & overall too

Only thing on my mind is .....
what will happen to the Operating System & Respwan Dvd i got with my Laptop
Will i have a conflict when i want to install to factory setting
cos those were done with old cards

I will have to make one myself i guess
cos I asked them & even offered to pay double
but they said they dont do that

So any recommendations how I should do that
What software should i get ?

My guess is that you could get them to go either way with it, depending on how comfortable you are doing it yourself.

Yes, this upgrade was a very good move on their part. Even for new buyers I think the M17 is a legitimate contender with the M17x if you want something with a smaller form factor, but it's especially good for existing owners and it's good to see Alienware taking care of them.

I reckon there was a lot of influence from dell... ;)

But yeah, it is very very nice to see the cards in the M17. Perhaps they decided that they'd make more profit through having them rather than concentrating on their M17x

I just got off the phone, after a very long hold time, and was told I would have to send in my M17 to be able to do the upgrade and each card will cost $227.95. He also said the old 3870's would be returned along with the upgraded M17.

EDIT: Unfortunately, I've been downgraded to regular T.S. for some reason. I had a hard time understanding the reps english and he seemed less familiar with the products than the reps for government and business customers.

Rob41, did they give you an estimated time to completion for the upgrade? I'd love to send mine in to them (wasn't really crazy about doing the upgrade myself anyway) but I'm leery of being separated from my gaming rig for long periods of time... :)

    Price sounds great, though!

Maybe I'll check on larger SSD's too..... :) heck, maybe I'll just head over to the Alienware site and window shop on any potential upgrades.

now that I think on it, I wonder if it'd be better to wat a few months and try to do several upgrades at once - my rig pretty much does everything I ask of it now, so upgrades would be purely for my need to have cool stuff...

Yeah, the price really is great!

Sorry, I didn't ask about time to complete but i would take any estimates with a grain of salt anyway.

Expect a month and if you have it back in a couple weeks or less you'll be happy.

I didn't ask about the SLI cable either cause I'm sure I would have been put on hold again. It's safe to assume the cost doesn't include a new crossfire cable. When you do this upgrade, speciffically let them know you want an additional cable. Otherwise they can be difficult to come by in the event you want to use the old 3870's in another rig or you want to sell them.
