According to ATI's website, the 4870's have gdd5.

Everything I read said GDDR5.
Why is it that the M17 could never use Nvidia cards? -
I don't think anyone has tried. Plus that would be a pretty expensive experiment. Buying a 9800 just to see if it would work in a M17.
But on a side note, the 3870 did work in a M9750. ichime confirmed that. -
prob mobo restrictions - just as the m17x cant support ATI
-
So why are the multipliers locked for M15x, M17x, and M17 systems equipped with extreme chips? Even if one wanted to, they can't without reflashing to the OCZ BIOS which voids the warranty automatically.
Alienware seems to be too wary to cover overclocking under their warranty, which is a shame given their reputation. The least they could do is offer a factory overclock with these systems. -
what? come on, man... let's take a look at the X9000 chip. Intel clocks it at 2.8GHZ. why? because that's the highest speed every X9000 chip can run at without failing. at 2.81GHZ, at least one chip would fail/explode/go bust/burn/destroy itself/whatever. so i ask you, why should AW let you overclock under warranty if they know that this will mean at least one chip will not be able to take the OCing and therefore require warranty work? it'd be stupid on their part, really...
-
Not true. The fact that the X9000's stock clock is 2.8 ghz has little to do with it being the highest speed it can run without failing. That has to do with cooling because any CPU will fail if it is not cooled properly; whether it's running at 1.6ghz or at 800mhz. Also, if what you said were true, then the X9000 should have its multipliers locked, and it doesn't.
The Dell XPS M1730 system with an X9000 can be overclocked to 3.4ghz and still be covered under warranty. Same with the Clevo M570RU. So obviously the X9000 can be pushed higher without immediately failing.
The thing is Alienware is delegitimizing these Extreme chips by charging the premium associated with these processors because of the unlocked multipliers, and preventing the consumer from experiencing what they are essentially paying extra for when choosing this processor option. Matter of fact, they try to cloak this by upping the price of upgrading from a T9300 to a T9500. This is why I say they should factory overclock it to something other than 2.8ghz (maybe 3.2ghz) to make use of the extra cash customers pay to get the chip. They have done this before on their desktop rigs that were equipped with extreme chips.
Alienware is not the only one as Toshiba is also guilty of this as well. -
-
How many here actually OC their rigs and know what they are doing compared to the masses that read this and "think" they know what they are doing and burn up a chip, mobo, etc and blame the reseller for their mistake? And on top of it want the reseller to fix it (according to warranty and at the reseller's expense). Its like the Obama plan where we are all paying for the other guy buying a house he couldnt afford.
The resellers are doing one thing by locking the bios and voiding warranty, and that is to save needless expense. Without it they would just pass it on to you the buyer by increasing the costs of everything. Increasing costs does not sell machines. -
This is not a political thread. This thread is about electronics. Bash President Obama in the Politics Thread in this site. Not here.
-
This is true, and unfortunately they are their own business and can do whatever they want. Morally Alienware is at fault and could just not offer the chips in the first place. I actually wonder if ATi provided the drivers for the 38xx and even these upcoming 48xx cards and enabled ATi Overdrive, would Alienware cover that? haha
But the costs are already increased. I mean, a $900 upgrade over a T8100? Given that a T8100 retail is about $100 (should be significantly less than that direct from intel), that's more than enough profit from a previous generation chip. an X9100 retails for less than that, and this is from vendors who are also looking for profit out of selling these chips. -
i don't believe it! Alienware's at fault here because they refuse to allow their customers to push their laptops beyond their limits without voiding the warranty?
-
Well, most people if they don't come to here don't know what the X in the procs model number mean.
That see "Extreme Processor" and go "Oh Boy!" They're probably the same people that don't know about OC'ing a proc. -
woah woah woah! I'm not saying that Alienware has to unlock multipliers so that they will have a infinite number of multiplier levels (and I don't think that's even possible). They can unlock the BIOS multipliers to a certain number, as some BIOSes do. As a matter of fact, take a look at Dell's BIOS screen:
http://www.legitreviews.com/images/reviews/743/dell_m1730_bios1.jpg
btw, if you know how to access a BIOS screen, it's very simple to overclock via multipliers in this manner. We're not talking about using LN2. -
I wouldn't say that it's a significant number of people who buy the notebook with these chips. I'm sure they'll ask what makes extreme chips so special, but Alienware will just point out at the 2.8ghz vs the 2.6 over the next best available proc, and not tell them about the unlocked multipliers
-
AW probably wouldn't have the time to tell them and their sales rep probably don't really know either.
The customer would be like, "Multipliers? What are multipliers? And what are BIOS?"
Can't assume all of AW customers are knee deep into knowledge of computers. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
that m1730 bios looks like you hhave alot of chioces to make in it. i like that.
bit if i was aleinware i wouldn't push the qx9300 over 3ghz. -
Exactly my point, prices have already been raised to cover expense. Its all part of the resellers business plan. Think of how much discount we could get if resellers did adjust their bios and warranty policy? It could be enough to make them somewhat affordable for a lot of people. Increased sales with lower overhead beats everything.

lol money money money
its always about the money -
bump so people will stop asking.....
-
MR.Moo ... would you like to see this thread in the "m17 sticky"? I think this is a question which is often asked^^
Greetings
Julian -
Julian this is your sticky
it's your call ---what I can do is gather info about parts being released ... But there is not much new that's has came out from AW but the 256 gb hd's and tv q2000 CPU and the future 4870's.
If you want to put it in there go ahead ... Wish every one would read the sticky first though -
this just isnt stopping ppl from creating new threads...looks like another one just sprang up
-
No kiddin we even put in the sticky
-
Any news on a release date yet?
Thx! -
none whatsoever

what do you guys think the price will be of the Dual 4870s?
Right now, if you go from a single 3870 to dual 3870 its $250. So will the 4870s replace the 3870s while keeping the same price? or will they have both cards and up price for 4870s?
I'm guessing the latter, but how much are we talking about here? ballpark -
i think the 3870 option will stay (single and CF) - as for the 4870, i'm figuring 350-400 each. just a guesstimate.
-
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
Are the 4870s completely new architecture? What kind of performance-VS-price can we expect?
-
they are saposed to be as good as sli 9800m gtx or better
-
Any idea what will it cost us to upgrade
to dual 4870 cards with shipping & everything
under $700 ( just a idea if anyone knows)
also how many days will it take Alienware to send it back
& do we need to clean it to factory settings before sending
or just make a back up of our files ?
after they install cards
will it be like new or like the way we send it ?
with all our software already there that we had before
thxs -
It's probably just going to be the GDDR3 ones as found in the Asus W90.
-
I hope its the GDDR5 ones
!
-
ha ha no if AW get as lazy and in a rush as ASUS did, its over
-
I guess this is why they take their time ... Alienware is known for hardware from hell and hell doesn't mean to hot to play games ... it means the performance is hot but the cpu/gpu keeps cool

Asus did not rush, its just a different market segment, $2200 for the X1 or $2400 for the A1 is way different than what the AW model is going to be boasting for a price tag.
For what you get Asus is almost always impossible to beat in a dollar per performance ratio.
AW owners are the "high rollers" and Asus owners are just more money conscious is all. That said AW should have the higher up gpu or they have nothing to sell there unit over the much cheaper Asus unit other than an alien head on the lid. -
I did mean the scores I ment the problems with the heat
But ok ... I would love to see the M17 outperforme the W90 (is his the right name?)
Greetings
julian -
Umm..nope. I asked them too before I bought my M17 they they are working on the "4870's with DDR5" when they are put into mass production. Makes sense we are waiting because I think they only started mass production of DDR5 only recently I believe. But I can't stand waiting too much longer...lol -
Des the W90 have the DDR3 version?
Greetings
Julian -
Yes it does....Vicious is correct though, although we may end up having the faster GPU Asus still owns the price/performance ratio here.
-
I am quite sure you will be right, but what can I expect? Will the DDR5 version outperforme the DDR3 one clearly?
Greetings
Julian -
Well DDR5 should have twice the throughput of DDR3 in theory, not sure how it's going to look in it's final mobile form in the 4870's, but yes it should outperform the DDR3 noticably. -
Comments made by ASUS techs in emails to Striker regarding his original lock-ups convince me that the W90 was rushed. Specific comments were made about how no other manufacturer had 4870s out that used GDDR5 and that Samsung had just started producing GDDR5 made it sound like ASUS did not want to wait and wanted to be first to market.
-
3DMark scores from a single 4870 in a W90 scored lower than a 4850 from a MSI GT-725.
Single W90 4870 running a T9600 OC'd to 3.05Ghz
MSI GT725 4850 running a P9500 OC'ed to 3.03Ghz

If someone other than ASUS builds the card a Mobility 4860 should beat a Mobility 4870 with GDDR3. -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Well, as it stands, the M17 is holding its own with the W90 performance wise. The drivers better get mature fast because right now, the W90 isn't blowing any of the older SLI/Xfire top end rigs away (9800gtx/3870).
-
The dual cores are now seeing 15k 3DMarks since the last bios update, and don't forget the QX9300 that overclocked to 4ghz and topped 20k. Even the lowly Q9000 is brushing 13k straight out of the box when clocked to 2.28ghz using turbogear.
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Like I said, the M17/Whitebook is still holding its own. That QX9300 OC'd to 4ghz (by ONE person, who works FOR Asus and kinda disappeared) is an ad-hoc situation. In day to day usage, with real world settings, the M17 is holding its own.
And as those 4850 vs. 4870 scores show, the "4870" isn't exactly lighting the world on fire.
M17/Whitebook can use every chip the W90 can use. In addition, the Turbo function currently tops out at 17% (!). Whitebook allows an Extreme chip to be what it was meant to be....fine tuned via multipliers.
W90 is a beast, but let's keep it real. I'm voicing my discord from the perspective of a potential buyer who is evaluating *everything* out there when able.
If AW/Flex deliver as promised and the 840 chassis actually gets 4870 GDDR5 cards....it is going to get *real* interesting. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yes, it is a very hard choice between the two. because of the fact the asus is set at 2,200. and when you check the m17 or the whitebook and you start to really put somethings on it you say "oh no"
but really i looked at the asus thread and my whitebook with my old t9400 outperformed the asus overclock. (not by alot.) in some games. when aa/af was turned on it was a different story. -
12743 3DMarks from a single 4850 with T9800 OC'ed to 3.51Ghz and GPU OC'ed to 540Mhz/890Mhz.

Pardon if 13K from CrossfireX isn't impressing me much.

dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
sorry but do you see that clock speed on that t9800. it was at 3.51ghz. that is very high. and i dont think that would work for normal use. plus my benchmarks for my t9400 outperform the msi gt725 with a 4850 and the cpu was overclocked. by alot. except in crysis. i'll get those links i deleted them from my sig because i just got a new cpu.
4870's confirmed and ddr5
