Thats good news. How did you go about the install to get it to work with 5870's?
-
-
.Hopefully it will be sorted soon.
-
i cant get it to install for some reason, first time ive ever had issues installing a driver, i just went back to 10.4
-
Fails on install for me as well.
-
I used the have disk method. Vantage and 06 dont run. i get black screen. uninstalled already. i hope these cards don't turn out to be like the asus w90.
-
-
This blows...-10 rep to the guy who brought it up!
-
installed and its working on my rig.
-
Can't get it to install with 4870s. Doing the normal install gets nothing. Doing manual install won't work either. When I go to the device manager to install the CCC, Windows tells me that the driver is alrady up to date. I tried telling W7 not to install drivers automaticaly, it didn't care.
Any suggestions? Sucks as I am hoping this will fix the Bad Company 2 load problems so I can actually play my game. I have been using CCleaner after uninstalling everything as well, FYI. -
Other things being equal what are the possible differences between one 4870's rig and another? Why are some installs working with 4870's and others arn't?
Ceullarm: Did you have those (nvidia) Dox drivers installed immediately before updating to Catalyst 10.6? I remember you were talking about DOX drivers the othe day. Other things being equal what is different about your system vs hero of the day 2004?
Not enough cleaning or too much cleaning and 10.6 won't work with SOME 4870's CF. What are we missing? Are some of these systoms locked down with a key of some kind? -
-
Another update on my attempt....I tried another game and it worked again. Didn't see any issues with game play. I also tried the system on battery (but not while gaming) and it kept locking up on me. I can keep trying but I don't think it's going to work properly.
-
i had the locking up issue on batterie with my 4850's on 10.3 (with a load of other issue) ..... it might just be a bad release for the 5870
can you test if it lock up when gamin on the batterie? mine did locked on normal use but worked fine for gaming on the batterie -
Bah, still has a buggy atioglxx.dll and OpenGL games and some applications don't work with this driver. Well, I'll just use the .dll from Catalyst 10.4, but it still sucks that ATi still hasn't fixed this issue that started with Catalyst 10.5 a month ago.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm beginning to miss Nvidia's video card drivers. -
I just went into the config folder and put the workaround to true, pretty much what I did with the last driver. but when I get off work ill post my system vbios and all that fun stuff. oh and make sure you download the mobility version lol, I downloaded the desktop version this morning and I couldnt figure out why it wasnt applying the display driver...lol noob.

Hi,
People with the R1 who have SLI Hybrid should read this. It came from the Dell website. If you choose generic drivers you will lose the SLI Hybrid feature.
Graphics options
* The computer will have to be rebooted to switch from Integrated GPU to Discrete GPU or vice versa. The need for a reboot applies to all the cases listed in the table where Hybrid Graphics is off.
Vista Hybrid On, Integrated Greyed Out = Discrete Nvidia 260M/280M or Integrated Nvidia 9400M
Vista Hybrid Off, Integrated Off = Discrete AMD or Discrete Nvidia GTX 260M/280M
Vista Hybrid Off, Integrated On = Integrated Nvidia 9400M
XP Hybrid Off, Integrated Off = Discrete AMD or Discrete Nvidia GTX 260M/280M
XP Hybrid Off, Integrated On = Integrated Nvidia 9400M
Hybrid SLI Modes
* Hybrid SLI is only supported on the Windows Vista operating system
* Hybrid SLI is only supported with at least 256 MB dedicated memory for the mGPU
* All displays must be attached to the mGPU for seamless mode switching
* Hybrid SLI is only supported on OEM notebooks with specially developed software released for specific notebook configurations. Loading generic drivers on a Hybrid SLI notebook will cause hybrid features to disappear
* The two operating modes of a Hybrid SLI-enabled notebook are:
- Boost Performance Mode where the discrete GPU and system board GPU work collaboratively to provide higher performance
- Save Power Mode where the Discrete GPU completely shuts off and the Integrated GPU renders and drives the display (HybridPower) -

A few thoughts
1) From AMD "The Installation Verification Software will prevent driver download on certain notebook products. This is to protect against the installing of drivers that may disable features or functionality provided by the system manufacturer."
Is it possible to turn off the verification software? What happens if you run the desktop version?
2) Must have windows latestest net frameworks installed.
Check for windows updates.
3) When installing the ATI Catalyst™ driver for Windows, the
user must be logged on as Administrator or have Administrator rights
in order to successfully complete the installation of the ATI
Catalyst™ driver.
Could some people have administrator issues?
4) The desktop version would not have the verification tool. Perhaps this could be modded. What ever happend to the mod men that were providing modifcation software. They seemed to have a thriving business and than just dropped off about a year ago. Why have they not updated their software?
I found it rather ironic yesterday that Dell was advertising the M17x over on the Catalyst download page. I wonder what has changed between 10.5 and 10.6 -
Here is the discussion over on the modder forum. It looks like they are having no better luck than we are.
ATI Mobility Modder and Catalyst 10.1 - Page 5
Some on that forum have suggested with older catalyst version that they had success by updating the driver and deleting the old driver from device manager page and using a driver cleaner. -
who exactly are these mobility drivers for exactly?
-
the driver refused to install on mine over 10.5..
So.. I uninstalled CCC, run it again, but it didn't want to install again.
Then, i changed the WorkaroundInstall to true and that did the trick (almost).
It installed the driver and the CCC but it did not install the HDMI audio driver and i did not have sound via HDMI cable.
I had to download the driver from ati ( ATI Catalyst? HDMI Audio Driver) separately and install it.
Now everything is working, finally.
How hard is it to make an installer that just works ? (see nvidia) -
I agree with you, if these are ATI GPU=ATI drivers, why are they so difficult to install.

I trust Mandrake's test. The 10.6 just do not work well on the 5870's. As confirmed by Joker, AW is working in this with ATI and hopefully 10.7 will fix the issue.
-
poopy.
10.7 is so far away sounding. It's almost like only the odd numbered drivers work well. -

Im kinda new to alienware (still not had my order delivered) but i have read about the driver issues , specifically for c/f 5870 which i will have soon.
Maybe a silly question but doesnt the CCC centre have a built in update facility which automatically "renews" drivers to the latest ones? -and thus by doing so, uninstall old ones? -
soem one reported the issue with 4870 so to me it seem like a driver installer issue they had it since 10.1

Surely to god they should just fix the stoopid thing....people who pay THAT amount of money for their euquipment expect it to work as it should do WITHOUT exception.
Personally, i dont feel that we should have to look for workarounds or other means to make the drivers work, they should work regardless or someone should be fixing them NOW and not in 2 or three months time.
If i bought a car and the engine didnt work properly, i wouldnt expect a mechanic to turn around and say "oh, were working on a solution to your problem sir, but you will have to make do with your car not working right for the forseeable future".....
Its just NOT on and I feel like ripping someones head off.......... -

Well I was talking to tech support finalizing the details of my exchange (warranty transfer) and I mentioned to the tech that I couldn't install ATI drivers on my new system.
He let me know that this is something they know about and they are trying to figure it out. They find that the new drivers 10.5/6 on their test systems were unstable with the 5870's and (like previously mentioned by JOKER) they are working with ATI to figure out the issue. Obviously no ETA and no real resolution but I found it helpful to know that they do in fact know about the issue and are at least trying to resolve it. -

Regardless of intended fixes, it still remains an issue. Im sure like many of you, i think, when i buy something it should work as it should "out the box".....i feel let down by AW/Dell as they should have thorougly teste the c/f 5870 config before release.....as it seems, it was rushed and whos suffering? - THE CUSTOMER - US!
Lets just hope they get it sorted soon -

I agree with you this is nonsense. I see Eurocom has just release a new 5870 CF laptop this week. I wonder if the AMD Catalyst driver will work on those.

Decided to just reformat my whole computer so I could also enable raid since Alienware of course decided not to. Back in Windows now, tried to install the 10.6 drivers first, windows still says no, saying the driver is up to date when I try and do manual install. This is pretty frustrating.
EDIT: Also, Cuellarm, I tried what you suggested in the PM, still a no go. If I run the installer like normal and choose custom install, the CCC isn't even an option. If I do express it just does it's normal run through the install, end with an error, and not actualy install anything. -
Dish try the workaroundinstall method? Do you have the 4870s?
-
Yes and yes. I gave up and went back to 10.5. Reading that other message board that was posted, sounds like Bad Company 2 is running like crap on these new drivers. Since that's the main fix I'm waiting for, I won't bother with these ones that seem to make things worse. ATI seriously needs to get their crap together.

Shame about these 10.6's and the 5870's. Hopefully there will be a speedy solution which comes well before the release of 10.7's.

Does anyone know (or can say) when 10.5 was released? - im just looking at timescale really so we have an idea how long 10.7 would be from 10.6......dont really want to wait for months on end if ya know what i mean!
EDIT: What kind of stock scores are people getting with the "useless" drivers and is there any idea of what they should be hitting "If" they were using good/fixed drivers? (for people with c/f 5870 really) -
As far as specifics go, it's usually middle to middle-end of the month, I think. Terry Makedon, the Catalyst product manager, usually tweets when the drivers are getting set for release. -
