Yours will probably come shipped with whatever stock video driver is on the dell website. Mine did.

I think people are moreso looking to see if they improve c/f 5870 performance with all due respect.....could be wrong tho :)

    Failed to install.
I keep the 10.6 beta set, installed on April 2010, they work fine with the games I usually play: FS9, FSX, Lock-On, FreeFalcon 5.5 and X-Plane.

    No problem mate.
I am quite sure you have Dell's version of 10.5 installed since that is the only driver that is 100% working so far.

This is what the info tab on CCC shows on mine (cant paste it as im not on the m17x atm)

    Driver packaging version 8.692.2-100203a-095371C-Dell
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc
    2nd Driver Version 8.01.01.994
    2nd Driver FIle Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/Co....
    Direct 3D Version 8.14.10.0723
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.9263
    Catalyst Control Centre Version 2010.0203.2211.39787

It means you have the stock video driver from Dell installed. If you want 10.5 you'll have to install it yourself. Get it from ATI website.

Which ones work the best? Dell stock or Ati 10.5? - also i have no clue how to go about changing so any help would be appreciated - do i need to uninstall the old driver first or uninstall the whole CCC? or just update from within CCC....advice appreciated.

Sorry I took so long, I had to go out. The ATI website only has the 10.6 driver ( That I could find.) From what I understand they dont work with the 5870 card. I could be wrong about this though. I just ran the 10.5 on top of the stock driver. Sorry but I dont have a link for the 10.5s. Perhaps Batboy or one of the others on here can hook you up. Good luck.

I couldnt find 10.5 either, only 10.6 on AMD....question being should i stick to my stock dell drivers (as above) or change to 10.6 which doesnt seem to work right yet....

you will not be able to game in full screen with 10.6 as was discovered by joker.
Use the driver from Dell's website

Is that the latest Dell driver for c/f 5870's? - im presuming if it is, there is no point me doing anything until 10.7 is released? - is that about right?

    I'm afraid so. Sorry.
P.S . If someone has the 10.5 driver on a USB and knows how to upload it to you,you could install the 10.5 driver. I don't know how to do it. Other than that, I guess you're stuck with stock. Sorry.

Hey, its not your fault! - i really appreciate your help....seems stupid that only the latest is available from AMD and not past releases also???

And im assuming that 10.6 is worse than what i have now as stock from Dell, according to Joker's comments about not working full screen...(i take it this means no gaming in 1920x1200)

I just wish they would get it sorted once and for all!

Looks like i already have this installed i think.....according to my CCC

If i cant get 10.5, im stuck with this right?

There is no other driver that works correctly with the 5870CF from Dell then the Dell drivers.

    Thanks Joe (again!)

1st thing i wanted to do when i got the pc yesterday was to check what i got installed....seems i have the latest dell offering and as you say, the others dont work....so, no point in getting 10.5 or 10.6 or anything else until AMD come up with something that DOES work huh?

BTW - I love the desk you have built......im gonna get my jigsaw and router out soon !!

After several days of testing and tweaking the settings in BFBC2 and MOH beta, I am back to 10.5 CCC/8.732 drivers. 10.6 was really a bust, even with the updated app profile, the frame rates were just dismal with these drivers.
Here are 2 captures on the same map/same settings/almost same spot. 10.5 drivers (Right screenshot) had more than 3x FPS. Only downside is game load time is increased with going back to 10.5.

I keep hearing that the AMD drivers are not compatible with the dual 5870s but do they work with the single 5870? I just want to upgrade my drivers without worrying about a crash or something worst.

I've had 10.6 installed for a day or two now. I thought it was decent at first, but now I'm getting blue screens all the time.

I'm going to go find 10.5.

Not sure but i think that the official 10.5 won't install on Dell's 5870 CF cards but Dell's version installs fine. Nevertheless Dell's version IS 10.5 like Lozz here mentioned.

no, they wont. the 10.5's Dell provides are slightly modified, although not in a performance way, so they're the same as 10.5 in that regard.

...the 10.5 version is said to solve a loading bug in BFBC2 (unusually long load times)... and the default dell drivers still have that bug...

Could someone please refer me to any info available on this:

I've read through this entire thread and can't find an answer.

I recently received a alienware replacement m17x with dual 4870's in crossfirex. My catalyst control center is version 9.7 (shipped that way from dell). Ive tried numerous times and can't get it to update. I download the link from ATI and try to install but it always says the same thing "all drivers are up to date". however if I look under information in catalyst it still says version 9.7 and the 4870 drivers are 8.680.2.0 from 11/25/2009.

I've read about a workaround but can't find it. Also, does that apply only to the 5870's that everyone seems to have problems with or also the 4870's?

that would be because there's no Fix in A06 to enable driver updates to proceed normally.Besides, a BIOS revision will not fix what's wrong. It's the drivers that are the problem. The system BIOS has 0 to do with not being able to smoothly install the 10.6 drivers.
