Well, perhaps it is dells new strategy with alienware, since they have a very similar lappy (m1730) and just not the looks, so they might've thought that they can slowly "eat" alienwares marketspace away with delaying their 17" so much that customers will go and look at the dell ones, and finally switching when it gets over their head with waiting, and from the rest that HAS to HAS a alienware they can pump out the money and those people would wait anyways...

I'm giving AW 1 more week, after that I'll go with sager....they are a bunch of %$#&*@ for making us wait without giving us any information as for as the release date. In the end they will lose a valuable customer....me :)

+1 I'm out, gone for the m1730, can't wait any longer.

The m17x will be bulky/heavy too. The price insane?

ROFL :D They are cheaper than their ailenware counterpart and what are you doing in a m17x thread going on about 'insane prices'. :D :p

Got a nice deal on the 1730

    T9300
    Vista Premium
    2GB Ram
    120GB HD
    8800SLI
    N Wireless
    Bluetooth

Came out to be 3409 pre tax (free shipping though)

I doubt the m17x would be able to compete with that especially when it first arrives on the market.

nice. seems a beast of a machine. i'm sure you will enjoy it very much. i only briefly had the m1730 but with onlly 2gb ram and the 8700mgt sli...with what you have it'll be amazing. congrats on the purchase!

so far alienware has lost 5 customers (according to my count, might be way higher) with potentially high budgets...way to go alienware

honestly speaking the 'carbon fiber' look is actually pretty cool looking with the speaker lights (its pretty darkish and looks killer when you turn on the red speaker lights..like a demon). the front lid lights are ok...not too bright. i had red and i hate red so that might be the reason. the lights are more subtle looking than the m1710 though. especially in "breathing" mode or whatever its called. Oh, and this thing is massssssssive....powerbrick is also massssive. though my malx is big, m1730 would make that look small. about 2in thick (the lcd is really thick since it has to accommodate the lights and the builtin camera. You shouldn't have a problem picking it up with two hands (one if you're strong enough) and moving it occasionally. i could move it daily without much hassle. i spent most of my time playing around with the lights. keyboard lights are cool and the gaming LCD gives good specs. With dual 8700mGTs it got so hot in an hour on gaming mode that it was like a volcano was taking a piss' on my thigh....soooo with dual 8800mGTX it'll be close to having a supernova burst on your thigh..lol

Has AW mentioned anything about new features for the M15X at least?

I can not believe that AW went to CEBIT with nothing new to show. From what I have been reading in the posts here, they didn't even take a M15X to show off. What is up with that?

Well, I guess it is time to start looking for something else. That is if I am going to get a new one before the turn of the century.

Ah - but! How many of these "lost customers" have gone on to purchase M1530s or M1730s instead? Hardly a loss for them, when one considers the big picture.

True, but whereas I would have spent £2500 with Alienware - I only spent £600 with Dell.

Also - although the money is in the "pot" between the two companies, Alienware needs to rake in it's own share to keep market value in itself.

Point being, if Alienware doesn't turn over enough - their budget would be cut for R&D unless Dell pumped god knows how much into them and if it looks like they are doing bad on paper Dell could decide not to support what seems a lost cause. Alienware needs sales period :).

So although Dell may have profited from Alienware's lack of structure, I'm sure it can only be bad news for Alienware.

therefore nothing new for us :)

Though Alienware is getting sales from the m15x...in the last couple of months, we've seen Dell put ads for the m15x up on its site as the top of the line 15 inch gaming laptop. The m17x has gone into limbo, while the "Best" configuration of the m1730 has had a $599 discount. Last week Dell launched a new "affordable" gaming desktop. This week Alienware launched its new ALX desktop starting at over $5K. Is it just me or is there a pattern emerging of Dell and Alienware not competing directly with each other but are instead using both companies to fill different parts of the market?

I still think the m17x has been shelved until Motenvenia, mobile Quads, etc. so that it can fill that part of the market and compete with the new Sager/Clevo Montevenia models shown at CeBit.

That could be true, but then why hold out on a fully configurable m15x? There has to be some connection with that and the m17x..

Has anyone notice the price drop on the m15x (now $2079) and m9750 ($1360). Also the previews start price for the cheapeast confuguration($1499) went up to $1709.

shows up as 2071 for the m15x and 1363 for the 9750...the unreleased low-end m15x still shows up as 1499 though.
edit..the 1709$ shows up on the config page, not the intro

My thoughts exactly. I think with the Clevo release now it creates a pull towards it in the market. Given that the Montevenia was supposed to be released end of May, early June. Let them have the spotlight now. This way AW will have the spotlight on them next.

We have yet to really see what the 8800 SLI will be like and same with the 9xxx series that they were spouting about which also will be out in May/June.
