as far as i know, tsmc makes the die, but they don't make the actual card. this whole thing is probably just a parts shortage.

I would expect a parts shortage with the extremely high demand the 680M is enjoying. If that's all it is, as I also suspect, it would be silly to allow people to continue configuring systems with parts that are not available for builds. It would create a huge backlog of orders they might never recover from, not to mention all the angry people that expect freebies because the parts are on backorder. It just makes perfect sense they would halt the ability to place an order until stock is replenished.

AW had a sale of up to 15% off, plus you have back to school buying. During this sale you could get a top end system almost as cheap as just under that. So it makes sense they would have a surge of 680M orders.
-
TSMC's refusal to ramp up 28nm production quickly is the main culprit. Also nvidia is one of many companies buying those wafers.

I'm not here to stir anything up so I don't quite get what you mean by "All credibility has been lost." Whose credibility has been lost?Believe me, I want this to be a supply issue more than anyone but it still might end up being more than that. Again, all I did was relay information that I was given and hope that someone else here would be able to shed some more light on the issue.

TSMC may make the die and another company produces the end PCB, but it does seem like there's a die shortage to begin with. Anyone remember how few GTX 680 desktop cards made it to retail in the first place?
My guess is that right now, they're devoting most of their usable GK104 cores with this binning configuration to the desktop side - the GTX 670 - which is currently selling pretty well right now. The GTX680M is still an absurdly pricey option, which is limiting its sales relative to the desktop card. -
My M17xR4 which I ordered on 20th July with a 680M was shipped today, after it was delayed from it's original EDD of 10th August. They must have had a new shipment!
-
That is not bad if it was only delayed a couple of days, at least you got one

i sure hope so...because this was posted in the m17x benchmarking thread...
Grechie said:Hey guys maybe I can shed some light as to why the 680m disapeared on alienwares website, it is due to limited stock,
I ordered on the 2nd of august a M17x 3D 120hz 680m laptop, and around the 8th of august i was informed that alienware are out of stock of 680m's untill mid september!
Now just reading this cannot overclock nonsense I am sort of regretting purchasing it! Its annoying to purchase a gaming laptop, to only have it locked down! Ah well...
I hope when it arrives it changes my mind! Ill post some pics and benches when i do
Thanks guysClick to expand... -

GaryBray said: ↑Yes, I agree. I think my laptop was one of those that would have been affected as my revised EDD was September 3rd which did upset me somewhat at the time. As it stands it will only work out being a few days past the original EDD, which, considering all the speculation flying around this thread, is very good - I was starting to wonder if it'd ever be delivered!Click to expand...
I ordered August 3rd and my EDD has not changed from August 17th.
Thank you,
Monnie -
ordered mine on the 2nd of August and my EDD is still the 20th. I contacted Dell employee purchase program (my company at&t is a preferred customer apparently) and she said she would follow up with me by this week.. Well I got a lil antsy and emailed her today and she said there are no delays on my order and it should be shipping out from Dell in a couple of days.. Hopefully she speaks the truth!
-
Good News Platelock !!!!!
-
I ordered mine on the 5th. EDD is still the 22th.
-
The manufacturing yield is not great on these and since the release of the quadro 5000m which costs 1500+ and is essentially the same as the 680m, I'm sure Dell would rather fulfill the M6700 orders before the Alienware orders...
-
Noticed reseller sites like xoticpc and hidevolution have "pre-order" listed for the 680m's

I had a phone call for a quote with a Dell Rep last week and he said and hinted about ordering ASAP and he said it would take until around the 22nd before it would ship.. I couldnt pull the trigger yet so now im stuck until they get in more 680s, which I am guessing is around the end of August

I order the replacement of M18 with Nvidia SLI on August 7,2012 and suppose to ship out yesterday and did't hear anything from Dell. Calling the customer service (employee Purchase program) said Graphic card is back order.
But he will update with me later. The replacement for M18x r2 /680m SLI, the Bluetooth ship to me was broken connection cable, who's ever built the unit damage the clip the holding cable, the hidden the cable without connection.
I find out after can not connect the wifi, open the back panel and see the Bluetooth was missing one connection ( from what I see on User guide) trace the white cable sure enough it was not attach the Bluetooth connection.
Call dell and they agree to replace the new system. Now has to wait until they have all the part. By the way I able to using this fault Bluetooth Laptop by using the tape holding the wire on the connection.
I keep this laptop until the replacement ship out to me.
Too bad 4k laptop and they ship to customs like this. -
I ust recieved word that my M17xR4 hsa reached my city. According to my Dell rep, it was the 2nd last machine to recieve a 680M from the Malaysia factory. Apparently the 680Ms are completely out of stock and everyone is waiting for new supplies of the same.
-
What was the date of your order zarkov2k?
-
26th of last month

Annie the Eagle Notebook Consultant
My GTX 680M SLI has today moved to "In Production" and the Dell Rep said that he will most likely tomorrow have a Confirmed Delivery Date, My EDD is still the 17th. (Ordering from the UK)
-
Cool, Annie. Excited for you.
Due to the overwhelming success and higher than expected sales of the GTX680M, they are currently out of stock. The card will return to the sales web page when they have stock available to offer customers. -
This after noon receive an email from Dell | EPP Customer Care, confirm that Nvidia 680m graphic card not available and due on the 08/24/2012
Well I have to wait the replacement until the date. -
-
So, yesterday my M17x with 680M arrived at my doorstep. The A05 BIOS is already factory installed and there doesn't seem to be any issues with it so far. As a lot of you are now saying, it does indeed look to be purely a stock issue. For everyone who has an email saying that their EDD has changed - I also got one of these and then 3 days after receiving my email they shipped the laptop. My revised EDD is actually 14th September.
-
GrayBray,
Congratulations on your system landing !!!
Here's to hoping for a premature arrival after my EDD was delayed -
@GaryBray
Reading this gives me hope -
I spoke with a Dell rep yesterday who hinted at the cards being back in stock sometime early/mid September.. This wait is killing me!
-
well they will have them sooner or later

I was supposed to get mine on 8/17/2012. Now the ship date has moved to 9/12/2012. This wait really sucks.
-
True, but it's still better than the alternative. It is what it is... but, it will be worth the wait in the end.

Received a message phone call from FedEX that the package will be delivery tomorrow by 3.00 PM.

I'm just hoping they don't cancel my order. I can't get an answer from anyone at Dell as to when the cards will be in stock. Today my rep seemed to think they were discontinued. None of the AW reps on here have been able to provide an answer as to when they will be in stock (if at all). If they cancel my order, I'm not sure they'd offer me the same price once the cards came back in. I might have to do some serious complaining. And I can't go with AMD cards anymore. I thought I could handle waiting a few weeks without a laptop. Now I'm not so sure.
-
Gamers are now stuck between AMD's bad drivers, and Nvidia's terrible supply. Rock and a hard place if there ever was one...
Alienware/Dell no longer offering 680m in any laptops...? - Now available! (See post #125)
