And this is why I have a desktop... >_>
-
Even though there is a backorder, they could at least let me build my machine with the 680 m =/. I don't mind waiting but forcing me to choose between the other cards is not fair!
-
Forcing? Nobody is forcing you to do anything. You can wait, buy something different or buy nothing at all, but only you can decide. Also, this is not Alienware's doing. The 680M was one of the most wildly successful products they have offered consumers in a very long time. I'm sure they wish that had thousands more of them to sell, but the supply was rapidly exhausted. The supply is affecting other vendors as well.
-
Do you have any data to support this? How do you know that there just weren't a lot of them in stock from the beginning?
-
people still struggle to get a desktop GTX 670/680 and the 680M chips are derived from the desktop 670...
-
Long, out of curiosity, how has your 7970M treated you?
-
its a decent card but not great as I can barely OC it. But lets try to get back to topic and focus on the 680M instead shall we?
-
I am basing it on what I was told by a Dell employee (someone in a key role, and not a sales rep). He might have lied to me, but I have no reason to believe that he did.
-
There aren't too many people who support Dell on this forum more than me. But even I don't completely absolve Dell of blame for being out of 680m's. If they would have correctly estimated the number of cards they needed, coinciding with the sales they had promoting this card, this probably wouldn't have happened. They have partnerships with Nvidia and I'm sure there are projected specific numbers of cards that they are guaranteed to have by specific dates. I'm guessing that those numbers fell short of actual demand due to low estimating of demand and poor response to AMD's cards.
Is it totally Dell's fault for being out of stock? No not really. But you can't absolve them from blame completely. You can usually fault any distributor or reseller for being out of stock of something.
My EDD has been revised to 9/5/12. I told my rep that under no circumstances do I want my order canceled. I'll wait it out and hope it comes early. Patience is a virtue. However, if my order is canceled, then I will shift the entire blame to Dell for tying up $4k of my money for over a month without delivering a product. -
I really think the big killer here is the failure of AMD to fix their own issues and this is causing lots of new buyers to be willing to buy a far more expensive card. Doesn't help that dell wont ship a 7970M with a 120hz screen either. I am not sure dell would have predicted that dynamic.
-
I ordered on 8/3/12 and also had mine pushed back to 9/5/12. Over a month to get this one if they make this time.
-
Yea.. Same here. It's been revised to 9/5. Ordered on 8/5.
-
Well let's hope they come sooner then that. If either of you get an updated EDD or shipment, post it so we can all start refreshing emails.
-
Received mine today M18x r2 with Nvidia 680m SLI. everything working great. Will replace and add more RAM and up grade HD to SSD.
Also will have to contact Dell to return the defective unit back. Wonder if dell customer sevice will sell the defective unit to me. [ Bluetooh wire defective] -
Awesome... glad you got yours. Congratulations. What date was the order initiated?
-
It was order on August 07,2012 for the replacement unit. and suppose to ship on August 13, 2012. Then received an email from Custom service rep that Graphic card was back order and due on August 24, 2012.
An unexpect yesterday received phone call from FedEX about shipping from Dell. And follow up from Dell Custom service rep email about the shipping status.
Then the Unit is delivery today. -
Ordered 8/3/2012 Initial EDD was 08/17/2012. Updated EDD is now 09/12/2012
-
They're baaaaack... For now...
-
Seems they are back on the configuration page as an option with a notice "May delay order"
680M Order Delay Pop-up
Good thing for people wishing to make a new order, the price has dropped $250. Now $850 instead of $1100 for the SLI 680m option
Thank you,
Monnie -
That's good news. And it says they only delay the system by 2 days which I would assume means they are either in stock, or will be within 2 days. Hopefully our EDD's will move up.
@MonnieRock, I still see them as a $1100 upgrade over the 660m. $850 over the 675m. Which makes sense. Shortage of supply rarely drops the selling price of an item. Actually, I'm surprised they didn't go up. But I guess Dell/Alienware is probably already charging the max amount for them. -
The price is only different under the "featured promotions" configurator version. They tweak the prices of several features sometimes when you're using the "featured promotions" configurator. They normally take away a couple configuration options as well or at least they don't give you a choice.
-
Ahhh I got fooled on the slick "featured Promotions" configurator Sorry about the confusion
-
Did anyone call Dell to see if their 680m came off backorder?
-
Now gotta wait on another promotion event, $50 savings is definitely not worth it when you can get wait and get 20%+ off.

The 680 has been added back to the configurator. http://dell.to/HVchMV
Stock has been a bit delayed, orders should be moving a bit faster now. Thank you for your patience.
May not be available for all regions. -

Thanks for the update, Mark. That's really good news!
-
Congratulations for getting the card back. However it is rather disappointing that the "Alienware m17x" is the only system that has no promotion what so ever...Will that change soon (Perhaps as soon as the m14x's promo expires on 28th)? Thanks for delivering the news and cheers
The 50 dollar saving you speak off ,Is it in the form of a coupon? and could you explain how often coupons appear and change? thanks -
Way to steal my thunder! I already said they were back on the previous page
I'm kidding... but seriously...
-
@ Sub-Xero. You did scoop the AW guys. I'll Rep ya. +1. It would have been nice to hear some real news from Dell while the 680s were on hiatus. But noone knew anything which was disturbing. At least now they are back on the M18X page with no delay notice. So they must be in stock for now.
-
They were on back-order and stock was depleted, so it wasn't all that disturbing.
-

Will give him some rep as well. Was still in bed when Sub-Xero posted.... Mountain time....
Was awaiting the release date when boom... Back on the configurator! I am happy. Ordering mine. From what I've seen, worth the wait.
BTW, ran Sleeping Dogs on the 680's yesterday in the lab. Wicked graphics. Cool game so far. Anyone playing it? -
Everyone that I've talked to at Dell has been more than helplful assisting me. But they didn't have official information until the cards were back on the site. At the time, that disturbed me, especially when I have an order in the pipeline. It would disturb you too. But everything is good and well in the world again. The cards are flowing and we should all be happy.
-
Hey guys as most of you I have been eagerly waiting for the come back of the GTX 680 but the fact that the m17x has no promotions and that the coupon gives you a mere 50 dollar discount, I am considering a little bit of patience...
Could anyone please explain to me how often "Coupons change" as I find it strange that their are at the moment 500 dollars discounts off the previous alienware generation (gtx 580 systems), does that mean that coupons rarely are available and that is why that previous generation coupon is still there? I am totally lost! (PS: 50 dollar discount expires at the end of this month) -
Instead of waiting for coupons, have a look at this thread:
And then either call 1-800-ALIENWARE to negotiate a killer deal or visit this thread and get a quote from Rev@AW:
You should be able to negotiate a deal better than you can get using the online configurator price less coupon discounts. You will need at least 5 quality posts before you can use the PM system. After 5 meaningful posts your ability to PM should be activated with overnight processing of your NBR account.

I noticed the 680m is listed as a 2gb card on Alienware's configuration now that it's back. I thought it was only a 4gb card. For those of you who have it, do you have 2 or 4 gigs of ram on yours?
-
only 2gb buddy
-
Clevo GTX 680M GPUs have 4GB of vRAM on each card. They sell them as aftermarket upgrade parts, but they are very expensive and the graphic switching capabilities of the M18x will be affected. (You can only switch to IGFX by going into the BIOS and changing from PEG to SG. Using FN+F7 doesn't work like it does with the Dell cards.)

I wanted to post on here because I ordered Aug. 6th and have been following this thread closely. I unfortunately have spent over 4 hours on the phone with Dell and over 2 hours in chat session and have been lied to the whole way through, with reps contradicting themselves over and over, and BS'd around for the entire wait. I ultimately spoke to a manager today after I was told i would speak to one on Monday, where he ended up tellin me that he cannot talk about further compensation until the system has been delivered, because I was already offered compensation for an incident where I was told a coupon could not be applied when it could, so basically anything Dell does wrong from that point on is ok because I received compensation for a previous matter already (50 dollars), he did not so much as give me a a faster shipping method, especially after doubling my delivery time WITH NO NOTICE, my delivery date came and passed without so much as an e-mail. My Engineering firm and I will now be leaving Dell after 10+ years of LOYAL patronage and suggest you people do the same. It is your decision but there are plenty of companies that would be happy to take out thousands of dollars and be very courteous and helpful along the way, making your purchace a pleasant experience instead of a nightmare costing you hours of time just to get the truth, DELL IS NO LONGER WHAT THEY USE TO BE. They literally have no concept of service and conduct business like you are in a back alley in MUMBAI, India, which is not surprising considering everyone you speak to is from India. I really wanted my alienware and am really upset this had to happen, but when I couldn't even get a 1 day increase in shipping when my expected time has been doubled and I have been lied to about it the whole way through, I had little choice.
-
Glad to hear that about Sleeping Dogs
I purchased it but haven't played it since I was waiting for the 680m's to come back and finally get my order sorted out.
On another note; after two months of hassles, including some even yesterday while I was trying to order an m18x with dual 680m's, I was FINALLY able to get an order placed with the specs I wanted for the price I was quoted back when they were offering the 15% off. -
I deleted the nonsense post. Having joined the forum to vent, and done so, no more "I hate Dell posts" now that it's off your chest. We would love to have you stick around and contribute to meaningful dialogue if you are interested in doing so. This is a technology forum and not a platform for disgruntled venters to repeatedly post their grievances.

Bummer about the 2gb instead of 4. I looked around and the best I found aftermarket is $850. It's great that these laptops are upgradable, but that's too expensive! I think I'll wait a bit longer before I order as I'd really prefer the 4gb and I've read some rumors that Alienware is expected to have them soon. I'd go with Origin or another Clevo builder, but I feel like the Alienware laptops may be more durable and Dell offers their accidental damage warranty on them. I just hope I don't have to wait much longer.

So is dell offering any kind of compensation to the people who had their laptops delayed 1 month because of the 680m?
-
They were only out of stock from 8/9-8/23. Were you having delay issues beforehand? I do seem to recall seeing you post about it but can't quite remember.
Edit: I looked through your posts and saw that you were one of us that were gettings delays but that you had gotten your M18x R2 already. Did you get any compensation before yours finally arrived?
I doubt Dell/AW will really "offer" any compensation but I definitely made sure to get mine when it came to my order. Doubt they'll go back and refund any money to those who had delays and already received their order. After a ton of complications I managed to replace my order on 8/23 (original order placed on 6/23) and got what I guess would be considered substantial compensation. I still do not have an M18x R2 in hand but here's hoping that it arrives on or before 9/6 and I won't have any more delays or anything. -
Is the Dell 680M still having problems when overclocked/overvolted?
-
"I" was used 14 times
"My" was used 5 times
"Me" was used 2 times
-
It would not make any sense for anyone to receive compensation for having to wait for the flagship GPU stock to be replenished. They would not be entitled to anything for having to wait, nor would Alienware have any kind of obligation to provide compensation to them. It might be different if their money had already been taken or they had received a product with defects that could not be addressed by the warranty because of part availability. But for waiting to have their money taken... not so much.
-
Agreed. People seem to think that they should get compensation for everything. If Dell held your money for a few months without giving you a system, then you could have a legitimate argument. Having to wait another 2 weeks for a product you purchased is unfortunate, but people should have a little more patience.
-
I can understand where you guys are coming from and all situations are different but I can't imagine that anyone would have the experience I had and not expect something in return. Honestly, I didn't even really get compensation. I just got the price that I was quoted during the short time Alienware was offering up to 15% off right before the 680m's went out of stock. Oh, I did get a $200 e-gift card so I guess that was some compensation but that wasn't something I demanded or asked for. Definitely nice though.
There are several of us who were being delayed repeatedly while others were receiving their computers before us when they had ordered after us by up to 3 weeks. I won't speak to everyone elses situation but I was told specifically that the reason for my delay was the 680m. I placed my order back on 6/23 for those of you that don't know. I watched while numerous other people here on this site ordered their computers (with 680m's mind you) as far off as 7/16 and received theirs on 7/24... You know what I received on 7/24?... My third delay notice. If I do manage to receive my computer on or before 9/6 (my latest/newest EDD) it will have been well over two months since my original order...
I really haven't seen anyone around here say they expected compensation merely because Dell/AW was out of stock or that they expect compensation simply because of a delay. People normally seem to want/expect compensation when they are lied to, mislead, misinformed and/or mistreated. -
As I said, you have a legitimate arguement. Have you tried PM'ng any of the AW reps on this site to see if they can help? I would try Rev@AW and see if he can help. Was the 15% off sale running back when you first placed your order? I didn't know it had been running that long.
-
So Mark O is there any word on when the 680 will become available as a replacement part?
Alienware/Dell no longer offering 680m in any laptops...? - Now available! (See post #125)
