I would really be surprised if the non-lit board has the lights but they are just not plugged in, or activated through software, or something else like that. I'm pretty sure there have actually been independent shortages of the lit boards, meaning that they are physically a different component.

The easiest way to check is that if your keyboard doesn't have the lights cable is just to unscrew it and lift it up. If there literally isn't an alienfx cable, then you're out of luck.

edit: someone already posted the link to the instructions on doing that, but here it is again...

Sorry Crizzler, i went out :p

But I'm planning to play some quite new ones, friends play world of warcraft so that on high priority, Maybe some bioshock, Gears of war, Crysis if it can play it, assassin's creed..

My mum found her statement so i took a quick picture of it, folded it so they could not see the transactions and took a picture, hopefully it will work.

It will play everything... although I was playing a bit of crysis right now and guess what? Lots of downclocking (even if the temps are not too high). Don't forget kids... Bios X30. :)

I'd like to say thanks to all who have posted in here, some excellant information.

I was hoping that someone could clarify the return policy in the UK, perhaps someone has had some first hand experience on this matter.

Anyway, thanks again, I'm still making my mind up, purchase or not?

I think EU law states that you are allowed to return any product within 14 days no questions asked for a full refund. You'll also have a year to return it under standard warranty if anything goes wrong.

I think there is some EU/UK law that states that a product should be reasonably fit for purpose, ie. if it breaks with some obvious manufacturing defect after a year and a bit then Alienware would still be liable to repair/replace it. I think that one is very subjective though, you'd probably have to mess about a lot to get them to do something about it.

    Damnit

I gave CS a ring and wanted them to ship a keyboard with the illuminated keyboard. Now he says they cant because its a different motherboad. I then have to cancell my order, ship it back and order a new one? how dumb is that and can it really be true that the motherboards are different?

Update: Just opened the laptop and could see that there is infact a port to put the fxkeyboard ribbon just not on the keyboard, so a new keyboard should be able to be inserted. Guess he is on drugs. Gonna call them again.....

Update: They cant ship the keyboard for some company reason. Its possible in US byt not in EU????? So still need to cancell order, ship back and order a new one??? how stipid is that. Even if it was broken i couldnt get it shipped i would need to cancell order/ship back and wait ages again. And they are not very helpfull, just no no no. There absolute no way???

That's really dumb; you should be able to order it separately

And no, there's no motherboard limitation or anything like that

    Hi

    After mailing back and fourth:

Thank you for keeping in touch with Alienware.

Unfortunately, our new policies state that it is not possible to upgrade to the AlienFX keyboard without canceling the system.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This just pisses me off and going to cost them and me money and time, instead of just shipping that damn keyboard, how hard can it be. And to all buyers, be aware that their new policy is you cannot upgrade without cancelling ur order and buy a new one!!!!!!

just to let you know the current uk laws cover distance selling and give you the right to return goods within 14 days, however, as this could be classed as a custom built order it may not be covered under the same law! i can look in to it if any one wishes! alienware have a seven day returns policy as under uk law restocking fees are illegal, unlike u.s!

on the warranty front, you have standard warranty that covers breakages (manufacturing defects) for the first year and then any extended warranty that you take out with any company. you can use the sale of good act (not sure which year, easy to find) to try and say that goods are not of merchantable quality or not for for purpose etc to get a repair! (use words like fair lots, trading standards and courts like that!) you can argue that seeing as you paid so much money for the product that you expect it to last a reasonable amount of time (i.e. you could compare it to the price of an acer of similar date and how long you would expect that to last) so acer £500 vs aw £2000 = twice as long given the specs of the computers in question (alienware 2x as good!) anyone following my theoretical BS?

sorry english law is confusing (currently studying degree in law)

on a side note, anyone with problems must report them asap because if alienware refuse to fix them as the damage happened a while ago the courts will see that you 'accepted' the damage and felt that you could use the machine with the fault there so it couldnt be that bad!

hope you catch m drift on all of the above! let me know if any one would like any further info! i promise to be sober next time i reply! :p

p.s. i know acer are far worse but just trying to say it in simple terms!

P.p.s. my m15x is in the post! woooo!
