Yeah, I know.
To make a very long story short, He basically said: We have offered desktop units that were tested and came overclocked. However, we were able to offer almost a full Ghz improvement which we believed to be substantial enough in terms of actual game playing improvements to justify doing this.
Currently, on laptops, although benchmarking numbers may show an improvement, we don't any substantial improvements during gaming.
We will continue to conduct further testing in an effort to bring our customers the very best gaming experience possible.
Anyway, just thought I'd pass along what he said to me FWIW.

My M17's just been shipped according to the order status
How long does it usually take for them to send an email about it being shipped? It says that my laptop's in phase 9 now but I haven't received an email from them. -
-
-
I didn't either but i went through AAFES.
-
Well they upgraded my order to Priority. They also said it was going into production tomorrow. I think they had to reset something because I got an email (and my order status reveals such) that my payment had been received and my order was moving to production - phase 3... I've been sitting in phase 4 for a week. I'm guessing it got reset now that the part has arrived to them. They estimate shipping to be next wednesday.
-
The phases jump all over sometimes. Before you know it, the puter will be on the way!
-
I was just wondering because only the day before the order status page displayed it as shipped (displayed as shipped yesterday), they sent me an email saying that they were out of illuminated keyboards and expected to have them in on the 30th (tomorrow). Is it possible that they would have had them early?
And (since mine is through the EU site) aren't they supposed to send an email with the DHL tracking number or whatever? -
I don't know about EU, but it seems like the M17's ordered from the States have shipped in a shorter than normal amount of time.
You'll get a notification some how when they actually ship it so you'll be home to receive it. At least that's what they have done with me in the past. -
It was 2 day delivery so if it was finished yesterday then I'm hoping that it'll arrive tomorrow (today even) and because where I live friday and saturday is the weekend, I've got no problem with not being here. That's one relief, at least.
My only worry is that the customs where I live loves to keep packages gathering up dust for a month. (Hopefully DHL gets past that quickly.)
But I'm really just wondering whether or not they HAVE finished it, that's all -
Here in the U.S. they give us a tracking number to follow and the day before arrival it lets you know the delivery date. Is it the same there?
-
If you're talking to me, I've got absolutely no idea. As I said, while the order status page says that it's in Phase 9 (shipped), I still haven't received any other sort of notification from AW. Maybe they've finished it but still need to give it to DHL, and then maybe they'll send me the tracking number.

The Cake is a Spy Notebook Enthusiast
I never posted back, but my M17 arrived a week ago, and I've been loving it so far. It's kept me so busy, I've hardly had time for anything else
.
I've got a few questions though. A few days after I ordered mine, the whole allpowerful thing started, and after reading through that whole thread, I admit I've become interested. After the unveiling, if I decided I would rather go with that, I'd be able to send my M17 back and get a refund (minus restocking fee), as long as it's been under 30 days, right?
I also ordered the backpack, headphones, and a mouse with my M17. Would I have to package those back up, and send them too?
...and I know Alienware is usually known for being somewhat pricey, but any estimates on how good of a system I'd be able to get for around $3000? I'd at least be able to give my M17 a run for it's money, right? -
yes it would depending what they charge
the base price right now with my info will be 2000
if you get SLI and base CPU u should be good , because Nvidia cards are not that CPU dependent. It is said the new laptop will offer 4870's but we do not know the price or how CPU dependent they are -
hey everyone, i'm thinking about getting a m17 and i was wondering if the 1900x1200 screen is worth the $200 dollar upgrade?
-
no you can get it off ebay for like 125-150
i prefer the 1440 its what i have and its great
but its your call it offers ALOT more room and the screen is over all a better screen -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i love my 1920*1200 and i am going to 1920*1080 and i am pretty mad even though it just a notch down. i had a 1440*900 and it was ok and i thought it was the best until i got the 1920*1080. so my advice is to get the higher one.
-
I had the 1900x1200 on my M9750 which I loved. I then got my M17 and thought I'd just go with the lower res screen.
What a HUGE mistake that was! The colors are not as vibrant, the viewing angles are not as good, it just looked totally washed out compared to the 1900x1200 screen.
There was no way I could live with the low res screen so I changed the screens between the two laptops.
Based on my experience, the low res screen reminds me of what screens looked like ten years ago and the high res screen looks clear, crisp and just plain stunning. Games and movies really shine with the better screen.
Although I posted a "how-to" change this screen, for the little extra money and full warranty suppot I highly recommend you include it in your purchase from Alienware. It will be a done deal when it arrives as well.
Enjoy your new rig! -
Phase 6 fellas! They say it should ship by Wed!
-
Ive been trying different drivers and they all seem to show around the same 3dmark score, which is around 10000. That is 3k lower than the score I had when I first got the notebook.
I have no idea whats going on. 9.5 ccc just stopped working yesterday, so I tried to reinstall it, didnt work. So I installed the 9.4 one. it worked. Now Im trying to get 9.5 back and working again.
ps 2 more questions: 1. How do you get the "caps lock" notification to go away? 2. Are there different drivers for the quad processors? I have no idea, but I was just looking at the ones in the driver manager and said it has ones from 2006. And also because my cpu test in 3dmark only gets like 1fps -
CPU test that is normal
Your only scoreing on one Card in 3dmark or you have every thing turned up high in CCC
Optimize CCC and you will be good you should be scoreing 14-15 k -
Cool cool. I didnt know if it was or not since this is the first time I started using 3dmark.
Im pretty sure both cards are working, because they are always the same temp. I just got 9.5 installed clean and seems ccc is working with no probs.
What do you mean by optimize? turn everything off? -
How long does it usually take from Alienware finishing the laptop to them giving it to the courier? It's been 5 days now since it's been 'shipped' (according to the order status page) and I still haven't received any emails from them at all saying it's BEEN shipped...
-
Mine got shipped the 21st apr and didnt get accepted to usps until may 5th.
-
Ugh, that sucks. I was hoping to have it by this weekend.
Anyone else who have had it shipped through DHL? How long after it was 'shipped' until it was actually shipped? -
Because default it comes up as 1200x800 and I get a score around 10k and if I do it in 1024x768 I get around 13k -
word on the street(AW) is that the 4870's for the m17 are coming out today or very close today in conjunction with the release of the new m17x. I was basically told not to sell my m17 for the m17x as i would be very pleased with what they will have to offer us m17 owners. We will see tho....tech support can be full of it
-
That'll be awesome if they come out with the 4870s today or some time soon. Maybe this Christmas I'll be able to put a pair in mine (depending of course on the cost! I am kind of a budget gamer
)
-
halogod , a cs aw said that to you ?
if they dont announce the 4870, i will explode -
since the M17x will get the HD4870 in a month or two, i think the M17 will get them as well.
-
naw i think it will get them sooner since the m17 is all about crossfire, the m17x has the 280m's so they have no reason to put 4870s in now. They want to release later for the m17x to make it seem like the m17x is getting upgrades like no other and attract more buyers
-
It actually seems to be a strong possibility that they won't in order to raise the popularity of the new M17x. -
well say they dont release the 4870's for the m17....whats to stop us from buying the 4870's seperately and putting them in the m17 ourselves
-
They arent the same size? at least the stocks ones arent I dont think
-
I would almost rather buy a barebone OCZ and toss a couple of 4870s in it and sell off the 3870s cheap to someone with a 9750 looking for an upgrade then to buy the M17x , i hate those glass screens with a passion lol.
-
There are some people such as myself that can't put 4870s in myself. (Because my father won't let me. Otherwise I'd be perfectly happy to do it...)
-
youre talkning about ddr5?
where to buy? -
Im looking in 3dmark06 system settings and it has "Linked Display Adapters" false under directdraw?
Is that right? lol shouldnt it be True?
Edit: Shouldnt there be an option to enable crossfire in CCC? -
Got an email today with Fed-Ex tracking #, says delivery is Thursday. Nice!

it's quite

-
his m17 duh!!!!
well Z said were looking 600-800 for the 4870's and expect them in a month -
Mine shipped today. Should be here in a couple of days.
As for the 4870's I remember when everyone said they were coming in April. I don't think they are ever coming. If they do I can't imagine they wouldn't be CPU limited anyway so I won't be too worried that I just bought one with 2 3870's. -
they are coming
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
thats what they said in dec. hope fully they willflashable becuase i remember in the ocz thread someone posted and said when flex was trying to get the temps down they tried alot of things(they should of looked in project freeze)
but they lowered the clocks. nothing lowered them even more nothing.
lowered the voltage(effects performance and can't overclock) nothing
so i think they made new cards and it will be better cooled but hopefully they were fine and didn't do what they did above again. -
To jump on the bandwagon about the 4870s, but I don't think they are coming either. I honestly feel it would canablize sales of the m17x, performance would be too similar. Heck, id settle for a pair of 4860s or 4830s, though I don't know how the latter compares to the 3870s. In the end, like most notebooks, I believe we are stuck with what we have, which isn't a bad thing by any means.
-
you do NOT want 4830's lol
not sure whats gonna happen any more ... -
My rig arrived today. It's plugged in and charging, waiting for me to get home!! I am official now.
