    If this is to be believed (and I don't see why it wouldn't be) it WILL have the wireless HD option!

    I don't get it...

    How does even an M14x have upgraded audio features, but the M17x R3 doesn't?
    The R3 wasn't even released that long ago. Like what, less than 2 months ago?

    - Built-in audio technology used WavesMAXX High-Definition 5.1 Performance Audio sound card (standard)
    - SoundBlaster X-Fi audio technology, High-Definition 5.1 Performance Audio sound card (optional)

    This is ridiculous, considering we're paying $2000+ for the R3, and we only get integrated onboard sound.

    Yeah, I can also see differences in the keyboard. Those pictures are of an M11x.

    Oh hey, there's a 'review' on the m14x US page. Lol.

    US M14x Site

    Is that the Chinese site that posted it? (The review seems to be on all region's websites)

    Ooh, and here's an M18x page (Japanese site):
    http://www.dell.com/jp/p/alienware-m18x/pd

    - 97Whr Battery... Is this bigger than the m17x? I don't know :S
    - Configurable with Bluray (NOT burner, only reader sorry), SLI (doesn't say cards offered, but yay for dual nVidia's), and i7 extremes (factory OC'd).
    - Supports 3D! And via the intel wireless HD thingy if you want that too.
    - No Thunderbolt ports :(

    Having trouble viewing the gallery. Will try and save some pics if I can make it load.

    And a german m11x r3 site:
    http://www.dell.com/de/p/alienware-m11x-r3/pd

    Though nothing here we didn't know already, except maybe confirming WWAN?

    And some lulz I found, search through the list of regions and there is a country 'Second Life' that links to this:
    http://www.dell.com/html/global/topics/sl/index.html?c=2l&l=en&s=gen&=&redirect=1

    I'm liking that there's the option of a Creative sound card in there for when headphones would be used with the M14x. It's also cool that there's a subwoofer there, but really, how much bass are you going to get from a 1" subwoofer? Usually they're closer to 2.5" on most laptops.

    On the m18x pics, whats the thing above the slot loading dvd drive? Not the media card reader but to the left of it.

    m18x vs m17x r3 side view
    [IMG]
    [IMG]
    Looks like express card to me too

    Subwoofer is better than none at all, i usually lower my subwoofer to very low volume when i watch TV, i don't like high bass but can't stand none-bass and that's why i game with headphones, i might even reduce the bass level of the subwoofer on m18x if it was "decent/normal"

    sucks the Australian site has none of the new info.. most thing that i've seen change on their alienware site is that they have removed the M15x.

    i think im going to go the m11xr3 more for portability I want to take it overseas with me when i travel :D just hope i can get my hands on one in time..

    I'm guessing it really is happening soon. Customer service reps keep telling me that it should be out within a week or so. Next week it is then! Although I already have the m17x r3, I may have to consider getting the m18x. I'll wait until people actually receive it and see what the problems will be.. or better yet, just wait until the ivy bridge processors are released and save money that way instead of trying to keep up with the latest tech.. If only I had deep pockets! :D

    In new games, the performance difference between 4 thread dual cores and 8 thread 4 cores is too large to be ignored. Besides the smaller screen on the m11 which gives me migraines (im getting old) the 4 vs 8 is a no brainer. If you plan to play BF3 or The Star Wars MMO or Diablo 3 you want those 8 threads.

    If I was going to order one next week, I would go for the 14x.

    Just my .02

    Steven, I think it depends on the uses. In my case, I have a good desktop (see signature) and, like most desktops, it is easy to upgrade if needed. Thus, my laptop mostly fills the need for portability with some gaming ability (which my E6400 fails miserably at), not for extreme gaming. I like to play games on my bed before going to sleep, and sometimes while I travel. Most gaming is done on the desktop though.

    Other folks which will use their laptop as their main gaming machine will naturally feel differently.

    So, I've never used an SLI notebook before... Is it possible the m18x will
    be sold so that it uses one GPU, and then the user could add a second
    GPU later??

    Thanks,

    That's unlikely at best. Upgrading GPUs is a very rare possibility in laptops, unlike desktops.

    The only way I know of making that possible is to use MXM, but I'm not sure whether Dell uses that.

    Its likely they will sell the cheapest config with 1 gpu, but if you want to add a new card yourself, you'll have to buy a sli cable (or whatever its called) aswell.

    Do a search on the forum and you will see many users have indeed upgraded their video cards, I was one of them. I went from single 4870 to dual before my current config. The parts are readily available on ebay. Not cheap, but available.
    However I think that because of the cost, most will upgrade from the OEM, I.E. Dell. I didnt have a choice in my original config since it was a replacement not a new purchase.

    It was always possible with the dual GPU line .
    But it was proved that upgrading yourself in the early year(s) it's more expensive than configuring with a CF/SLi setup from the beginning.
    Go cheaper on the storage solution(lowest HDD) , RAM, CPU and go with the best screen (if more available) as they tend to keep a good value over time :( or rare to find and good GPU setup.

    I am in exactly the same boat as you. My laptop is horrendous for gaming (except games like Super Meat Boy) so I use my Desktop for most of my gaming. I would like that to change though and that's why I'm looking at Alienware. I might have to wait one more year though because my laptop is only a year old and I don't exactly need to have a better one now. Hopefully by this time next year the M14x R2 will be coming out and if it does, I'll definitely consider getting one.

    It's no coincidence that our laptops are competitors of one another :) (yours is a competitor to the next revision of mine). They compete even at sucking for games! :D

    And yeah, I will not buy an AW soon. I still have more than 1 year of at-home warranty for my laptop, it would be a waste to buy another laptop now.

    Based of the dimensions from the Chinese site, the Orion should be able to take the M18x very well.

    Yeah, like I said, it appears Dell is shifting their line up:

    M11xR2 -> M11xR3
    M15x Low End Configuration -> M14x
    M15x High End Configuration -> M17xR3
    M17xR2 -> M18x

    It explains by the M17xR2 and M18x are nearly the same size, the M17xR3 is significantly shrunk down, the M14x is on the bigger end of a 14" notebook, etc. Essentially Dell seems to be "spreading out" its middle configurations, especially with the M15x being pulled as an option for now

    I just came across another grand. I am kinda tempted to get the M18x now and just handwrite my class notes which I do most of the time anyway. What do you guys think? I don't really care for my desktop anymore. SLI/X-Fire cards seem tempting. I wonder what kind of benchmarks you can get with some overclocking with the 18" coming out.

    It seem's like you can buy a small-midsized gaming rig that maxes out games for that year then it's outdated in a year or 2. But SLI Alienware laptops seem to last for 3-4 years, am I right?

    The M18x really does look like a beast with all that power. I'd go for it, but I just can't push my weight and size limits that far :p Can't wait to see some benchmarks of it though!

    For the 'less-than-total-enthusiast' gamer though, the M17x with a 6970 will be plenty. That still handles virtually every game out there maxed out.

    Ugh, if I do get a new laptop I'm stuck for choice between the M14x and M17x...it's a choice between more portability and more power...oh, and HDMI in is really appealing to me.

    Memory in multi-card setups doesn't stack. It has to store the same data on each card. So if you had 2 2GB GPUs in SLi/XFire, you still effectively only have 2GB of graphics memory.

    The way I see it is. Go small and portable or go BIG! Dual GPU's! Big laptop without them is pointless to me personally. I see alot of current r-3 owners feel the same way and are selling them now that they saw the M18x show its head.

    I know what you mean Like the Aurora MalX 19" laptop that was $4500 starting price :D :eek: Alienware Aurora mALX-R1 19.0" SXGA+ LCD Barebone Assy | eBay

    Now we begin to speak about the technical aspects, if you aren’t very interested in how the machine works, than re-read the above paragraphs for a few minutes, you’ll be entertained then. The operating system this computer gives you is Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional Edition, included within this operating system includes the 2005 Media Center Edition, as well as the system being Windows(R) Vista Capable. The processor is an AMD Turion 64 Mobile Processor (800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache). And the graphics cards are amazing in this computer, it’s a Dual Graphics Cards 512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX SLI ENABLED. Also, this computer has wireless connectivity, with an Internal 802.11b/g Wireless, with optional Bluetooth. Don’t want to be wireless, don’t worry, you don’t have to be, there is also an Integrated Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45, as well as an Integrated 56K V.92 modem RJ-11.
    This laptop is absolutely amazing, and if you are in the market for a new computer that is absolutely BREATHTAKING, than I highly suggest this one. However, be prepared to throw out some heavy-duty cash, with the starting price being at $4,499, this is NOT a cheap computer.
