As much as I understand that point of view (and believe in it) the hard fact is this: The M17x with a 6970 is capable of playing every single game out there maxed out, apart from Metro 2033. I don't need more power than that, and the M18x is just too big and heavy for me.
And, as tempting as it is, the M18x will likely be just too expensive as well. I don't even know if I'll be able to scrape the money together for an M17x or an M14x as it is.
The reason I'm considering the M17x over the M14x is this will be my main computer, not a machine to go with another desktop (or laptop). The M14x just seems too small. And the HDMI in on the M17x is a massive bonus for me.

Thanks for the flashback link Speedy! I sure wish Alienware would at least offer some custom Paint Jobs like they had on their old machines.
-
I see a fully loaded (or close to it) M18x in my future.
-
Its also why they are 1500 cheaper now -
sweetness excited to see the M14x
-
Do you think theres any chance alienware will have an option to remove the optical drive on the m14x and replace it with something else ?
-
10char -
whats the "10char" thing mean ? im guessing its like rep power or somthing ?
-
-
ah ok
10char lol -
-
I'd rather have a 560M, 460M or 485M in it and no optical drive, than a 555M with one. Just buy an external if you need it. *M11x*

I'm really torn between the m14x and the m11x. On one hand, the m11x has great portability, it's light, great battery, but a screen that's a little too small for my taste. On the other hand, the m14x has more power, some portability, a worse battery, and a screen that more fits what I want (13") than the m11x. I've been leaning towards the m11x for a while (mostly due to battery life and weight), but the main thing that has been worrying me is the screen size, which I fear may get tiresome to look at after an hour or so. I've had a netbook before and it bothered me to some extent, but it also was only 9", about 2.5" smaller than the m11x. My question to m11x R1/R2 owners: is it tiring to look at the small screen for a prolonged period of time? I'm mostly going to be gaming on it, but I also will be surfing a little and taking notes for school. Plus, how good can the m14x battery life be? I'd think that it would be significantly worse than the m11x as it uses "real" processors (not ULV), a larger screen (is that a factor?), and a more power-intensive GPU.

where
a few people, amongst thousands of notebook enthusiasts, on a notebook forum (where believe it or not, only a minority percentage of dell and/or alienware customers congregate in the first place) willing to trade out one for the other, does not constitute "a lot"...
in reality, the M17x R3 already pushes the envelope of portability & performance in a notebook. the M18x is an entirely different system altogether, aimed for an entirely different market segment who doesn't mind being tethered all that much, for the ultimate experience in desktop replacements. the consumer segment and model usage is in general much different, and should not be confused... -

Future Shop to check it out in person and compare it with Envy 14. I looked at the m11x screen for 10 min including typing and web surfing. Then switched to Envy. It is night and day !!! It is definitely tiresome to look at such small screen. Beside gaming, I need to read many document and charts. So m11x won't cut it. Just think about it yourself. Do you really want to look at such small screen for more than an hour when doing homework ? Also, I don't want my Diablo 3 character looks too small on screen -
I will have to order my alienware immediately upon release, after waiting 6 + months it will just be an uncontrollable impulse.
having said that m11x or m14x hmmm -

-
I know, just dreaming. I thing a 6870 would be amazing, but obviously no optimus, so I say a 560M.
-
^ I'm with kevmanw4301 sorry. I hardly use the optical drive along with many other people. Alienware could include an optical drive free. That would be nice.
I wished that they had removed the optical drive, added in a switchable 560m, and added another fan/heatsink. The last time I used an optical drive was in June 2010. Everyone has different needs though.... -
I'll be honest. I use an optical drive. Frequently. On my desktop. I burn alot of CD's, but for a mobile system, I dont need one, unless there is a Blu-Ray option. I actually love having a Bluray drive, since it allows me to watch my movies.
-
I totally agree on the bluray drive. I don't have much need for a dvd drive other than OS installs but bluray let's me watch some movies when I am away from my Media Center
-
NO WEBCAM??
that's a dealbreaker

What's the opinion on the 720p screen on the m14x? Is it bad compared to 1600x900? Also how much do you think the m14x will cost with an i7263?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
the 1366x768 screen is likely to be one of the normal run of the mill **** ones.
-
Can't wait for this m18x! I'm so happy I have a contact at Dell who works with me on pricing!
-
no backlit keyboard?
the biggest dealbreaker is the colour >_< I was hoping for something magical
-
That looks more like one of the new HP Elitebooks on steroids.
-

Any chance this will be offered with a matte screen?
-
No chance. Sold my M17x-R3 and R2, I'm ready for Avenger! -

I want the M11x R3, M14x and M18x to all be announced, but the only one I care about is the R3.
