Personally I loved the cold metal shell of my R1. On something like the M11x, and possibly the M14x, I would prefer something lighter. There's something to be said for the aluminium shell making the laptop tougher, but dropping an M11/17x from waist level regardless of shell is still going to mean at least a broken screen.

One other thing I really hope to see in these three upcoming laptops:

12.5mm HDD support! Come on, how hard is it? A $2k 17" laptop that we can't even use 1TB drives with? *sigh*

Well, in all fairness, I see that as a problem with creating a 12.5mm drive, and not a problem with laptop design.

The hard drive manufacturers never should have made a 12.5mm drive, if you can't put it in a laptop.

That's quite possibly the worst answer I've ever heard. How on earth could anything in the computer industry be evolved with an attitude like that?

This is true.....there are like 5 laptops made that can take one of these drives. Manufacturers only care about bragging on capacity and not that no one can utilize these drives.

I recently got screwed by WD because of this. I sent them a 9.5mm 750GB that was dead and they sent me back a 12.5mm 1TB drive....I had ordered the 750 initially because it was the biggest 9.5mm drive out and now I have NO 2nd hard disk in that laptop....THANKS WD!

Aren't the 12.5mm drives actually an older standard? I know my Dad had an old IBM notebook that had a thicker drive.

Speaking of colors. Any thoughts on the Nebula Red M11xR3 that was mentioned in the April launch rumor? With Soft Touch Black, one can be rather sure what to get, but a red laptop... hm.

The 12.5mm 2.5" form factor has always been around but it is used in enterprise for high density storage servers since the drives fit in a 2U server upright. Also 15k scsi drives are usually 2.5" I believe. The issue is when companies like WD market their scorpio blue drives (which is a mainstream consumer label) for laptops drives with the 12.5mm height

My M17x R2 fell off my laptop stand (cart) and hit my wood floor from a good 4.5 feet. It left a nice gouge in the floor but the M17x was undamaged. Rock solid and a good home defence laptop to boot!

I tossed my backpack with M17x in it on the bed and had too much gusto and it roled off the bed and crashed onto the hardwood. Left a nice "laptop corner shaped" dent in the wood but no damage to the laptop :D The screen was a little crooked from the impact but I gently forced it the other way and it is straightened out now. (viva la accidental damage coverage just in case haha)

And when I had first gotten my M17x I did have a dream where it stopped a bullet.....lol

Y'all all want me to keep my R2 and send back this flimsy (By R1 and R2 standards) R3. It is waaaay more rugged.

I just recommend not dropping it.....the R3 is the superior machine as long as CPU overclocking is not the most important thing in the world for you (guess the RGB is a loss.....I never had it so wouldn't miss it)

When I held the M17 R2, it felt like a riot shield in terms or build quality, lol. It felt like the laptop can take a few bullets and still work.

Well, it seems they are running out of stock of NVIDIA cards for the M15x and not replenishing them. A week ago, the description for the system stated that you could select a GTX 460M when you actually could not. Now, that part has been removed, and it says you can choose a 260M. However, the 260M is no longer an actual option while configuring. All that's left are ATI cards. Seems the parts are dwindling. Could be a sign of things to come. Or things to cease being.

Say farewell to the m15x, it really does look like they are letting it die off. But it makes sense, it is perfectly replaced by the m14x/17xr3 by being just a little smaller/bigger. of course things are tweeked here and there

Why would they replace a 15" with a 14", I was hoping next time around they would make the new M15 around the same size as the original M15x.

So whats it going to be this time, a 14" thats the size of a 15" except for the smaller screen and big bezels?

Doesn't make sense, 15" is the most popular size notebook by far

13'' in my opinion would make sense 14'' really doesn't look smaller at all. 15'' are only more popular because they were pretty much a standard for ages, these days its all about small portable or big replacements. The 15'' are dying off slowly in not just Dell but other company's because people are just not purchasing them as much.

    My opinion : m11x R3
    m13x R1
    m17x R3
m18x (Only because there have been so much talk about it and the fact Alienware don't have new SLI or Crossfire configurable system.)

I'm in the middle of still choosing if it wasn't for chipset problems I would already have an m17x R3 however if they do come out with a 13''/14'' Ill definitely consider it , it just doesn't make sense to bring out a 14'' in my opinion.

No hate man. I honestly agree, I was really really hoping for a 13'' but evidence shows they are heading towards the 14'' market. Doesn't seem logical to me but they have acceptable reasoning.

When I was talking to a guy in JB-Hifi like a week ago he was telling me the M11x's were more common, the 15 and 17 being bought less often. This was just a reseller though of course, so don't know if it reflects all buying trends.

Wouldn't surprise me if an 11" were more popular Alzori, given the popularity of netbooks and the super low purchase price, I was more surprised at replacing a 15.6" model with a 14" [if that's in fact what they're going to do] considering the junk screen quality available on almost everything sub 15.6 and my own general observation when I go into shops, there seems to be three times as many 15.6" as the other sizes combined...meaning the 13-18" range in general, not Alienware specifically.

Yeah, I see that too. Seems a pity that in most department stores/large retail stores 15" is for many the only stock, along with netbooks and a sprinkling of other 11-17 inchers. Why does it have to be so hard to get some compact love :(

The xps 15 currently has a rgbled screen, why wouldnt they use that screen on a refresh of the m15x? People love the rgbled, it would really drive sales imo.

I can vouch for the M11x being more popular than the M15/17x. There's a simple answer to why it is too. There's simply nothing else out there that small, that poweful.

To find something similar in specs to the M11x, you really have to go to 14" notebooks and up. There are a couple of Clevo 13.3 models that come close, but that's it. There just isn't another 11" netbook out there with specs even close to the M11x.

I have owned an M17x-R1, which I've sold, and I'm eagerly awaiting the M11x-R3 and M14x. I dunno which one I'll end up getting, but I will be getting one. I just think it's wonderful to have something I can easily carry around with one hand, play games with, and still get 6+ hours battery life.

I like where Alienware is going with this, and I do think it makes sense. Withe the M17x-R3 being so close the the M15x in dimensions, an M15x refresh is a little redundant.

Is it me or did Dell just remove the M17X of their website? Also, The page displaying all AW notebooks now shows only M11X and M15X and if you look closely, there's a room for 3 more models on the right side! :) Looks like they are updating the website and adding extra models.

I agree that the reasons for the m11x being more popular than its bigger brothers are its price and size, but don't forget about the acer 3820t which is smaller, despite having a 13" screen, an ati hd5650 gpu and a normal voltaged cpu. Personnaly i'm not impressed with the m11x when you compare it to other brands, but within the Alienware brand itself, it is a very attractive product.

The consumer market usually knows Dell, Apple, Sony, HP, and Toshiba. They see a cool M11x at BB and see the Dell brand on the info sticker and go "AHHH THAT'S SO COOL!"

They don't usually know all the Acer and Asus laptops because of their terrible naming system. It just consists of numbers and letters! Only people like us who keep track of new models know laptops such as the timelinex 3820tg and 3830.

Marketing affects a lot of sales

If they will launch new models in early April, we should start to hear something very soon. I am also disappointed by a possible M14x, since it means nothing to me. It is still a brick. A M13x would have been much more interesting.

Quibbling over the size of a M14xvsan M13x is just stupid really.....I have an Asus UL80Vt at work, co-worker has a UL30Vt....they are virtually the same size. Exact same hardware except the UL80Vt has an ODD. The UL80Vt actually gets more battery life due to a beefier battery (which will also fit in the UL30Vt it so happens)

According to that source, the M18x may possibly have an RGB-LED screen and the starting price will be between 2499-2999. That's a long-shot though, but I'd like to believe they are correct about the screen. :)
