Emmm... It does show USB 3.0. I think there is a typo in the review? No mention of USB 3.0 but just USB 2.0 in the review.

My only curiosity is battery life. Alienware is missing that 13in to 14in machine that can last 4-6 hours like most laptops. Love my m15x but if a m14x came out with same build quality and increased battery life without throttling everything down I would be in.

Looks like a pretty nice system, is it a replacement for the m11 or the m15..you could look at it either way. Rep+ for the find, it will cause lots of talk.

Since it has a GT555M card so I assume that means it is a replacement for the M11x. Or we could think they just bring in a new member to the family to a new subdivided market, who knows. In the review it does mention AW is missing a 14-incher, which is the mainstream size. But that could be just the option of the editor. However I do think 11 inch is bit too small and 14 inch is quite nice and easy to carry around.

What would be you're estimate as to what price the m14x will launch at? I assume the m11x r3 will be $999...right? Also when is the speculated release date the 14x?

    Love the thread!

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the 3GB of VRAM is counting the shared system memory that Windows can allocate to graphics, and that the actual amount of discrete memory on the GT 555M is 1.5GB.

To get 3GB of real discrete memory on the card would require 12 VRAM chips and that'd just be making the card unnecessarily larger for absolutely no reason.

    If it's 1.5GB than it's the 192-bit version of the GT 555M that uses GDDR3, and not MSI's 128-bit GT 555M that uses GDDR5.

Either way plenty of card so long as you pick the 1600x900 screen.

The 555 mobile version is weaker than the 550ti desktop. I am a bit disappointed in this video offering and I hope it gets some other ones. The card will be "ok" for mid level gaming but for anyone thinking of selling the current m15x I wouldn't bother as your 5850 or 460m is much more powerful. (Unless size/weight is a concern such as school or constant travel)

    Just my .02

I highly doubt the M11x is dropping off, I believe it outsells the other two systems combined now. If anything this is a replacement for the M15x-R2... a shame because that is a great chassis....

I think one shouldn't think of the M14x (if it's real) as a replacement for anything.

Let's do a bit of recap: a while ago, Alienware only had the M15x and the M17x: one mainstream and one DTR (= desktop replacement). Then they introduced a M11x. I wouldn't call the M11x "netbook sized" as some claim, but it's surely a very portable and quite capable machine.

Current lineup is thus 11, 15 and 17, and as many have mentioned, there's a gap which a 13-inch laptop would fit well. But AW/Dell has to consider whether it's better to have 3 or 4 laptops in its lineup. Generally, having an extra laptop in a lineup will boost the sales of the lineup, BUT the new laptop will steal sales from some of its companions AND there's also added cost of having one more laptop in a lineup (more parts to keep in inventory, etc).

If the M14x is real, Dell probably decided that within the 11 to 17 inch range it's only cost-effective to have 3 laptops, not 4 (I'm not touching the alleged M18x because I have seen very little info on it). It makes some sense to let the 15-inch go and introduce the 14-incher, AS LONG AS parts for the new size are of similar quality (screens in particular). This way, the 14-incher won't seal as many sales from the 17-incher as a 15-incher would.

So even withspeculated stats, would you wait for this or get an xps 15 with rbgled screen? I know the video card isn't so powerful in the xps but the screen is calling to me.

Depends on how big a gamer you are, I think. I bought an XPS 15 because of the screen, lower weight, and higher battery life. The outstanding sound and Bluetooth 3.0 didn't hurt the choice, either. But I only occasionally play PC games. I do like high settings, but, by far ,the majority of games I buy are on console, and I should still be able to play with highish settings on 900p if not 1080.

However, if you're like a lot of people on the AW forums, and you play blockbuster shooters online all the time, you'll probably want to get the best graphics possible in the highest res possible and go with the 14x. Hell, I may even change my mind and get a 14x if it turns out to be light enough with an RGB or at least B+RG screen and decent battery life. That's why I've been keeping my eye on these threads.

I am more like you, I love my consoles and big tv for a lot of the current games, not into fps games, more into sims, strat, and role playing games. I love the design of Alienware, but the 18 and 17 are too big for me, want something in this size range that will last a few years, offer a great screen a good processor for photo editing. I also don't want to feel hamstrung by a bad or lower end video card in a year or two when some new RPGs and mmorpgs come out. If the could take the screen from the xps the rbgled one and put it in a 15 or 14 inch Alienware design, with a sb processor, a ssd, good fast ram, a good wifi card, a blu ray writer, and either the 6970 or the 485m, I would buy it in an instant and would be willing to go as high as 3.5 to 4k.

There's only one real reason Dell went 14" instead of 15" (or even 13") and that reason is it makes it easier to claim the "Most Powerful" title at that size than to go head-to-head against other manufacturers where they'd still only be able to end up with systems that are "just as" powerful.

I'm not too knowledgeable in SLI, but wouldn't it be better in all aspects (cost, size, heat) to use a single more powerful card instead of two lesser cards?

AFAIK, SLI only makes sense if you want to go better than the single most powerful card (or if you already own one card and want a low-cost upgrade, as in desktops).

Here is a picture from a guide on how to remove the display assembly of the m14x.

What do you guys think the " touch-screen board cable" refers to? Could we see a touch screen on the M14x or is this the touch-pad cable. Then again why would the touch pad cable be on the how to remove the display assembly info.

Sorry, that doesn't imply a touch-capable display. It can mean that, but it can also refer to the touch media buttons or the touchpad as you mentioned.

I don't think it's the touch-pad cable. There are extensive instructions on how to unplug a "touch-pad" cable on the palm-rest assembly instructions page. So that is separate.

I also have some small doubts about the possibility of media buttons. They don't appear to be on the center-control cover, as far as the documents I have are concerned. It is still possible that some buttons are on the display assembly but I am a bit skeptical (within the realm of the speculative info that I have).

In short, who knows, a lot of things are possible :)

My guess is that most people will config an 11x R3 to end up costing around $1250-$1350 and a 14x to around $1600-$1700. As for where they start...I don't even want to guess because it doesn't really matter, heh.

Kind of disappointed Alienware is still tucking in a optical drive in the system. They need to take that out, giving more room for a 2nd fan (faster video card) and bigger battery. With the extra space they can even fit a MXM card in there, making it true to the alienware heritage.

aaaaah! run for your lives...!!! The curse of the faulty hinges is back.

Or it could be that this is a prototype and it has been damaged when the Chinese reviewers were running away with it after they snatched it :)

I think similar defects were observed on the first leaked images of the M17xR3 but apparently the production models are all good.

I found the specification of m11x R3 from that Chinese IT site.
    ¡¾Alienware M11x R3±Ê¼Ç±¾µçÄÔ¡¿±¨¼Û_²ÎÊý_ͼƬ_ÂÛ̳_Alienware M11x R3±Ê¼Ç±¾µçÄÔ±¨¼Û-ZOLÖйشåÔÚÏß

It hasn't mentioned what the graphic card is inside. The CPU is i5 2537M @1.4gHZ 2 cores 4 threads. Maximum memory 8G DDR3 1333MHz. LED backlit LCD, resolution at 1366*768. VGA HDMI output.

Seems not big improvement compared to R2.

Following link gives pics of R3

Yeah thanks for putting them there, but since you just linked it's not working for me. I think the chinese site isn't working properly maybe... or maybe it's just me. but it isn't getting any photos off the chinese site (everything else loads) so then it doesn't work in your post either :S

Was hoping someone could put them on a different server if they can get them maybe ^.- (and the m11x pics too now, TIA!)

EDIT: Getting a few of the pics working some of the time now. Guess you just need to be patient..
