I just assumed that higher wattage adapter would mean that the laptop draws more meaning a comparable sized battery would not last as long. Did not know the R2 had a 90W adapter that is crazy haha

what i thought was strange is that it appears that they are trying to sell them at the top of the page... Can they legally advertise and sell them if it is not the R3 ?

But then again surely the dell webpage would be advertising and selling them... very wierd if u ask me

I know the i7 2657M - highest CPU supposedly on offer for the M11x - has a 17W TDP vs. the older CPU's 18W, but does anyone know anything as regards 0-10% power usage? i.e. what sort of power this thing pulls when it's left sitting or typing a word document or something?

I wouldn't put any stock in that link. Stuff like this always shows up before the launch of a new product. Usually they get pulled. Apparently this one just hasn't (yet).

    <bit of="" a="" rant="">[rant]
The 540M would be great news. That would put this thing within about 20% or so of the M17x-R1's 260, and that's before you take into account the resolution. Now, those are only very rough figures, going by Notebookcheck's mobile GPU chart, and having no idea of the rest of the system specs that these tests were conducted on, but it's still kind of cool to see how far things have come in two years.

Has anyone run their M11x attached to a kill-a-watt meter to watch power usage? This is something I need to do, I have 2 at home haha

It was necessary for my M17x since it can exceed the rated PSU output, for the M11x it would just be curiosity haha

The M14x seems a bad deal. It has the same 63 Whr battery as the M11x, but the CPU is higher TDP and it has a higher res (more juice) LCD. It is confirmed to have an optical drive, so there's yet more drain.

It makes more sense to wait for a M15x refresh if the M11x is too small, IMHO:

Alienware M11x R3 crossing the Sandy Bridge in April, joined by M14x

Sandy Bridge and Arrandale draw more power than C2D under load. Otherwise they are more effecient processors.

ya but since thier idle is more efficient and a cpu spend most of it's time on idle waiting for data even when "underload" C2D and SNB are preattymuch on par with the C2D a little more efficien but a little out made by the power of SNB

arrandale how ever is completely screwed consumsion wise

Seems to me that the 11x continues the super light (for AW anyway), the 14x replaces the 15x, the R3 becomes a 17x "light" (very similar in weight and specs to the 6400/6500 Precision series) and the 18x becomes the "kitchen sink" of gaming notebooks :)

The M18x better be the kitchen sink. I'm tired of Alienware not duking it out with nVIDIA's latest GPU. This one had better have two 485m's I swear to all that's holy.

Does it have a 128 or 256 bit memory bus?

    If it's a 256 bit bus GDDR3 is fine.

Its 128-bit bus, but the 540m chip itself supports GDDR5 and GDDR3, so it depends if Dell/Alienware wants to pay to have GDDR5 installed instead.

You don't need GDDR5 on a 128-bit bus for a GT 540M to push 1366x768 pixels through a ULV CPU.

GT 540M is a respun GT 435M which in turn isn't much better than a GT 335M or Mob. HD5650....and I would've much rather had an AMD Llano APU.

Could get a full powered triple or quad-core CPU with comparable integrated graphics performance, at about the same wattage, in a smaller package, eliminating the need for Optimus, and, if the APU is not soldered onto the motherboard, has better upgrade potential than any notebook with an MXM slot.

Llano APUs aren't even released. ULV gear is BGA for minimum socket height so it most likely be soldered on.

Too lazy to quote, so for the post above ^, if you mean what time it will be announced? Who knows, unconfirmed sources mention earyl april which is clearly right around the corner.

If you mean an event for which it may be announced such as CES 2011, the next event that alienware will tend (to my knowledge) is E3 2011, which is in the first week of June. We may hear about the new laptops even before that though.

Well, those same forum members and unconfirmed sources also said March 2011 as an announcement / release date. And before that, CES 2011 in January. And before that, end-of-year 2010. And before that, holiday season 2010. So far, they have a pretty bad track record for being right.

Now you all are starting to see why most of us are not bothering speculating, we will get what we get. We were all certain the M17x R3 would be dual GPU too, and look at it now lol

There were even people arguing that you could maybe add a 2nd gpu if you took out one of the HDDs after the manual of it got around.

Dell will do whatever they think is best for them and we will get to choose from what they give us, it is that simple. Speculation will only lead to you being very disappointed since the people designing these systems are not even close to the enthusiasts who buy and use them.

I know when Llano is due out and I'd still prefer it in the M11x R3 even though it means waiting an extra quarter.

ULV are all BGA, but Llano isn't all ULV.

    Not all. :mask:

Out of all of the laptops made by Dell... all of the Inspirons, Latitudes, Vostros, XPSes, Precisions, and Alienware laptops... they sell one laptop with an AMD Athlon CPU in it. (Inspiron M101z). And even that is a netbook.

We're not going to see an Alienware machine with an AMD CPU in it anytime soon.

sorry but this belong to the topic we are speculating on the possibility of seeing an amd base alienware laptop or even desktop in the future.

but to do so we look at the past in order to determine if the compagnies politic make it belivable that a such computer could be concieved in the future

When is the speculated release date for the speculated m18x?

I'm holding out on any purchase before this comes out.

    My 'wanted' spec:

    2720 sandy bridge CPU
    SLI 485m
    Top notch Alienware build quality
    HDMI-In with great picture quality
    Dual HDD
    RBGLED screen

Hopefully the R1 wont have too many bugs either! :D

Reminds me of the speculation surrounding the 3DS when it was first shown at E3 2010. Everyone was so confident in a holiday 2010 release at the latest, some thinking closer to October/November, with a price point of $180-$230. They sounded so confident and reasonable that I actually thought they would be right, even though my gut was telling me not to buy into it. Actual release date and MSRP? March 27, 2011, $249.99 (much closer to $300 in Japan which was really funny when that was announced, what with everyone going 'buhhh!?').

Finally did some tests on this. Ran the M11x off my M17x power supply (should be enough right? ;) )

The absolute most I could make it draw without adding voltage on the GPU was 54W

That is IMPRESSIVE (I am used to crazy power draw on my M17x haha - it idles at 80W where the M11x idles at 20W)

Additionally, during the OCCT PSU test, the cpu cores were in the low 50s while the GPU got up to 58. This cooling is awesome too :D

    guys,

I did business today with this warehouse that works with Dell.
They get to resale old wholesale stuff with Dell and destroy prototypes of future products from Dell, they have a contract.

The guy I talked to instantly knew what an m14x was and told me he had to destroy one. I saw pictures of pallets of Dell stock on his phone and other stuff that made him really credible.

So, I do not have anything official I can show ya'll and Dell hasn't announced anything yet, but I think its safe to say the m14x is real.
Also, the guy said usually when Dell sends him prototypes to destroy that means the product is really close to retail.

    Thought I'd share with yall...

    Alienware M14x Review from ZOL

Sorry the review is in Chinese. I can read it though :D. But you can always google translate it. :D

Basically in the review, SB 2820M with GT555M, 8G Ram and 750G single HDD. 14.8V/63Wh 8 cells Samsung battery. In terms of the look, just like a 14-inch M17x R3 with a few differences. The front grills, dont come with the plastic piece in the middle. To me, those grills on top of the keyboard seems like speakers. But In the review, it mentioned on the bottom side of the M14x, the fan is on the left and speaker is on the right... So maybe those grill on top of the keyboard is just some decoration. But I like it. Wish M17x R3 has it as well.

Seems this time the little brother got the same CPU as other memebers of the family. But GT555M, is that enough?

But it seems from the review, it doesn't come with USB 3.0 which I think is a bit lame. ( Updated: Littleone562 spotted it shows USB3.0 in the device manager. But not 3.0 mentioned in the review. I think there must be a typo in the review.)

    Updated:
    - Pics resized.

    - I spotted on the back, the model is P18G. Dont know what that 18 means.
