you got it from good sources???
if yes, do you know if the m15x refresh is soon too?

    Eric G. said...
Well, I do know that the M15X will also receive the NVIDIA GTX 460M. However, I don't yet know if its going to be a new revision like with M17X.
    chire said...
    thanks for quick response :D
    cool, two more last questions,
    a) any chances to see 470m option??
    b) what dates are wea talking, next week? next month?
    best regards

    Eric G. said...
My sources didn't mention the 470M as an option.
The announcement would probably be made within a month.
    Cheers.
    chire said...
    thanks,
well lets hope the damn refresh comes, for both versions :D

Seems to be a lot of focus on the M17x getting a refresh. What about the M15x?

I dont think we will see a refresh before sandy comes out in jan-feb. That and ATI mobility wont be out till then either. Do you really think they will release a new version before all the new stuff? Guess they could release with the 470's, and 480's but that would probabaly require better thermal management and a bigger PSU to handle the power needed. Unless they just Bios limit it hahahaha. USB 3 would be great, but i just dont see them redoing the case and everything else before the whole enchillada is ready.

A latch would be nice and USB 3 seems like a "standard" item for most notebooks that want to live through 2011 unchanged.

Separate mouse buttons would be much better than the rocker cheapo thing that we get now. That rocker is saving Dell 50 cents and it's ridiculously cheap on such an otherwise high end notebook.

Sandy Bridge will at least give us 20% more clockspeed pushing the EE chips close to base level 920 desktop chips which isn't bad at all for a mobile platform. I think you'll notice the speed between 2.1 and 2.5.

Obviously the 485M refresh is needed :)

Possible to drop in an extra cell or two of battery power? (on the not often thought of list)

All I can think of now (so tired)

    The 460m is too weak
    Hope they have a 470m or 480m in the m15x :)

& make it lighter than before with HDMI & Usb 3.0
Is it too much to ask for :p

The 480m is too much ask for as it operates outside of the M15x's thermal and electrical capabilities. Lighter is probably too much as well but the rest seems plausible.

I don't believe the 3D screen option as it means it would be of relatively bad quality and not RGB which almost everyone wants on the M17X.

How reliable has that site been in the past anyways?

3D LCD..possible but only if the R3 is 16:9 since I don't think there are any 16:10 ones. That would mean a total chasis redesign and I don't think we'll see something like that until next year.

RGB LED may be gone for good after R2, we'll probably get saddled with B+RG like the XPS 15. Initially I was excited about R3 but if there's no RGB LED, I'll be hesitant to switch over.

Yer I would guess the R3 may be quite different and may indeed be 16:9. It would be a good guess that something similar to the m15x with some of the GTX 4xxm cards get dropped into the R2 to help sales until they release a refresh next year (as someone else mentioned CES seems a good time, it's when the Sandy Bridge laptops are being shown) with the aforementioned changes. R2 sounds better to me still as the RGBLED screen vs a 3D screen... Seems everyone jumping on 3D, HP Envy, Sony Vaio F next year and no doubt probably an Asus g73 will have it too. Sad imo as 3D takes so much power to push and many of the screens aren't very great :/.

I would rather DHELL/AW spend money, time and effort on perfecting the R1 and R2 and getting the most out of these systems before trying to release another version that will for sure add more issues and time to resolve existing ones!

Anyway after Alienware being Dellienware, AW has become late in introducing powerful systems first in the market. Remember when AW was standalone, they had exclusive systems to buy first in the market with load of addon stuffs.

If Joker is right and they do not offer the RGB LED screen, I will simply not buy the R3. That and the warranty were the two main drivers for me. That screen is just too amazing to do without. Why would they penalize us in such a way.

A 3D screen is also quite useless for those of us who usually work on a large external screen and only use the internal display when travelling.

Any idea when the M17x-R3 will be available with the ATI6970 xfire cards or maybe the Nvidia GTX470M cards???
What possibilities are there from alienware side, to give my M17x-R2 back (bought in August 2010) und replace it with the R3???
    Thx

None unless your PC is defective and even then the chances are pretty slim since they will keep R2 parts for about 6 months to a year after the R3 is launched which may not be for another 3 to 6 months...

Talking about 3D screens finally one that makes sense from AUO shown here.

No glasses, no deadzone, 2D to 3D easy switching. No idea how nice the screen would look and the screen quality but it's a step in the right direction for the 3D crowd.

I speculate that there will be a significantly thinner m11x in the near feature. Not quite as thing as another 11.6" notebook like the MacBook Air, but maybe around 1" thick and some tapering. I'd also bet on a price drop. If they do go the thinner direction, it won't be that much more powerful than the second generation m11x.

I want one of those. A Core i5 should suffice. If they sell it for $600 (and actually release it after five months), I'm in. It would be even better if Alienware releases a thinner m11x with a Core i7 for $700 this month I can dream, right :p?

I don't even know what to think of this. It didn't even make sense unless I am misreading it. It is "getting a version of the 6870 in the form of a 69070"? I am assuming they meant 6970. However, what does that mean? Are they trying to say that the mobile name is 6970 and it will be equivalent to the desktop 6870? If so, that would be amazing. Hard to believe (especially if CF) but amazing. However, the next paragraph says there are no mobile 6000 series announced? Grrr...I dunno. Is slashgear even a trusted source?

its written, as an OPTION :D, not standard, so they might have RGB as standard and those who want the 3D it will get a different screen

better to get everything updated and refreshed all at once rather then having separate refreshes for each update. but its easier to do everything as once, rather than making new revisions and changes to the production line and the model every 6 months, that would be a pain in the butt for both AW and customers.

Whats so great about sandy bridge. I read about it online and it seems to simply offer better intregrated graphics on the CPU.

Thats not much help for alienware unless they plan on going with intergrated graphics...
