One experimented solution: use a thin mouse pad wich fits inside the Laptop when you close the screen lid: Travel-Smart Mouse Pad
It's very useful for me and avoid problems for a very little fee.

alright well this my third laptop, and third laptop bag and I have to say I'm not overly impressed with it. It gets the job done and it holds alot of stuff, but the build or the quality of the bag doesn't really seem convincing to me. I'll retrack that statement if it holds up as it after a year of usage but I'm more impressed with the m1730 bag that said XPS on it. I know that bag was HUGE but the build quality of the bag was much more impressive to me. I'm thinking about actually going back to that bag to hold my M17x R-2.
I've had the first XPS bag, the M1730 Bag, and now the Orion Bag. -
I still don't get why your bag has one extra sleeve.. Mine cant hold that much stuff at all, actually my good ol' Targus I use for school is much larger O_O
-
Maybe a factory defect. (not really a defect, more of a plusfect)
-
Lol, yeah maybe.. When I look at the pic on dell or amazon's website I don't see the extra sleeve.. Looks just like mine..!
Oh-well, it doesnt really matter. -
I found a bunch of old reviews on the old style backpack (Alienware Odyssey) but no where you can buy it! I want one sooo much!
-
Wanna hear a funny thing?! I live in Romania,Bucharest and that's like a million years away from where one can buy an AW backpack. I ordered one from amazon.com, came in a plastic bag and the friend that shipped it to me didnt bother to check the container, buuuuuut, I was sent a messenger back instead of the backpack.
It grew on me couse it's more formal and I can take it with me to all meetings and conferences, without looking silly and 17years old with a backpack on my back.
I even dropped it today, fell off my shoulder and it protected the laptop pretty well, with just a scratch on the lid because of other items I had inside the laptop compartment.
I have to say that it is a rather large messenger bag and once you fill up all the pockets it looks/feels even bigger. It is pretty comfortable (taking in consideration my bag weights around 11kg) due to the large shoulder pad. -
Ugh, that BLOWS. I love being able to call that in now.
Actually, I need to make a service call tonight. The Blu-ray drive is busted. Grr.
At least I got the disc out. It was the Windows 7 disc.
-
How much bigger than the alienware backpack can it be and not be considered cargo
Two weeks and its already busted? Well saving your OS CD at least saved you a chunk of cash. -
I won two of these backpacks in an online gaming tournament. I sold one of them to a lucky fellow in these forums for $40.
-
Yeah, I'm not pleased but I have an external drive I can use for now.
-
Does it still open and close, or did you have to hit the back-up eject button? Cause that can damage the disc sometimes.
-
It's a slot loader. Tweezers.
-
Don't feel like a fanboy. One, you can also get it from ANTOnline, via Ebay for $65.00. Two, it is designed to carry two M17x's according to the specifications, and I am sure it can.
The best part about it is, it's a good design. It has reinforcement and padding everywhere you want it. And yes, it is cool, so much so someone I work after seeing it thought about just getting it even if they didn't get a laptop! When's the last time you heard a reference to a backpack like that?
It really doesn't scream fanboy, rather it echoes the "stealth" styling of the current models. It's very cool and better yet gives you confidence in toting your system around! -
I think the "Tactical" look of the older bags was nicer. But the computers are 500,000,000 times cooler then the old ones.
-
After the messenger bag arrived last week,l I decided to order the backpack also and it jsut arrived this morning. I totally love it!
Here's a pic of them both.

I'd get the backpack (the messenger bag really is too muh weight on one limb for me) but the problem is that it can't fit my M17 and all my school books in it. Especially seeming as my A-levels start next year I need as much room as I can.
So I'm considering the JanSport Lap Station...should fit my M17 in as well as all of my books.
Back on topic...if the backpack is similar to the messenger bag in construction (which the pictures would allude to) then it's definetely a very nice backpack and should provide ample laptop protection.
Nice review, in any case. -
Geez, how many books do you have?:eer:
-
Packpack has arrived.
Niiiiiice.
-
Heck yeahz it is. Find the water bottle holder, win a prize!
-
Find it for under £90 in the uk and win a prize!

I was considering ordering one of the Orion backpacks as well but as I've yet to order my m17x I'll wait a bit longer I suppose. Is the Orion just padding all over or does it have some tough interior/exterior sections to protect from damage?
I currently have an Oakley Hardshell Backpack that I purchased a couple of years ago for my m1710 and it's been fantastic. Admittedly it's a tight fit for a 17" laptop and the backpack itself is heavy/large. I had a quick look at Oakley's current offerings and I personally prefer the old one I have.
Oakley's current offerings:
- Current revision the Hardshell Backpack which like mine, has a handy zip on the edge to pull out the laptop easily at airports without opening the entire backpack and pulling up velcro strips etc. (Shame that zip is only big enough for 15" though.)
- The Computer Bag 2.0 only seems to be able to accommodate a 15" laptop but it may be of interest to someone with an m15x.
- The Vertical Computer Bag 3.0 just looks ugly in my opinion - definitely think the Orion looks better in comparison.
-
That's not a backpack ... it's a giant turtle shell!
-
Yeah. No fair hiding it behind a zipper!
-
Holy crap that looks like a tank!!!!! I must have one of those!!
-
Yeah I just ordered mine, lol.
-
I wish it was a little cheaper.
-
Heh. Indeed. It does protect very well however - and I've always received nothing but compliments on it and questions about where to get it.
Unfortunately the one in the picture (the one I have) is discontinued. If you're really keen on that version as opposed to the new one on the Oakley website I've sent you a PM on where you may be able to purchase the original from. -
No, I like the new version better.
-
Fair enough - at least there appears to be ample supply of it. The only thing I didn't like with that one is that the panels are removable - which to me, defeats the purpose of having a hard outer casing. At any rate, hope you're able to search around and purchase it cheaper.
-
I actually think the removable panels are a cool idea. You don't always need that much protection.
-
Do any of you guys know if it is possible for me to get an orion messenger bag to The Netherlands? Any site that ships them to Europe?
Thanks! -
That Oakley backpack is pure awesome! I've got the orion backpack myself, and even though its not perfect i haven't had any problems with it. Just don't go throwing it around while you computer is in it.
-
Late to the party, but I've had my Orion for a while, and I can safely say it was worth the $100.
-
I have the Oakley and the Orion Bag and I switch out my bags from time to time however I dislike how the the alienware head is very scratch prone.
-
What's the best bag that's not all "HEY LOOK AT ME I'M EXPENSIVE AND HAVE EXPENSIVE THINGS IN ME SO YOU SHOULD STEAL ME!!!"?
-
Dual layer browngrocery bag.
Nowadays, anything that us good and durable is going to look expensive -
Over-Rated you know I'm not sure where you live but I've never had this problem it's over-rated and it never happens that way. Truth be told when you are with your laptop away from home you guard it with your life you NEVER leave it's side it's TAPED to your back at ALL TIMES. You would have to get shot if it were to leave your side. I mean what? you take your laptop with you, you leave it in your bag and then go to lunch and leave it in some room alone by itself and because it's in a safe bag that looks different you're comfortable that it's not going to get taken. Let's be honest here when things of high value are stolen like laptops they were 8 to 10 odds stolen by people who know you or know what you have, so cheap bag or not it's going to play no difference.
All I'm saying is I'm sick of the kiddies who think this whole bag thing makes a difference because it doesn't. When you have a 2-3 grand laptop you NEVER leave it's side thus it really doesn't matter what bag you have, and you should pick the bag that protects your belonging from falls and drops and is comfortable when carrying because that's what really matters. If you're in a area where people rob you straight up or jack your lappie off your back at gunpoint range, Guess what? YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BE CARRYING A LAPTOP TO BEGIN WITH. -
A pink Dora the explorer backpack. Just line it with foam so it keeps the computer safe, and put a remote fired shotgun facing the head and GPS tracker in case it's stolen.
-
Obviously I don't plan on leaving it anywhere, I don't even go to school anymore. I do plan however on taking it on planes, possibly to other countries. The more inconspicuous the better. I also don't want a very flashy bag. I'm probably going to have it locked to something most of the time when I'm at home lol.
-
Honestly, the only flashy part of teh backpack is the Alien head logo. You could probably just yank it off it bothered you.
A side note: the head is a scratch magnet. Mine is getting destroyed -
Does anyone know what metal the AW head is made out of?
-
I just ordered a Timbuk2 messenger bag from Ebags.com they had it on sale for $112 from $140. Then on top of that you get an extra 20% from Bing cashback, so I went ahead and placed an order before the discounts expire. Just hope it fits inside but it looks like it will.
Wont be traveling much with the M17x but when I do I prefer a messenger bag since I like to use a backpack as my carry on for my clothes ect.....Plus it's TSA compliant which was a main feature I wanted in a bag.
Here's a link to the bag on Timbuk2's site:
Timbuk2 Bags - Command - Oxford Nylon Fabric
Also got bought a sleeve for more protection to put inside the bag.

Okay I read through this whole topic looking for help on which to get.
I have a Alienware M15x 8GB Ram and such(Look in sig) I want a messenger bag type thing.
What is the best? I looked on timbuk2.com but I didnt really like a lot. I would perfer alienware but anything would work. I need room for my M15x, charger, small mouse and notebooks and papers for school.
Any recommendations that would fit my M15x.
Thanks. -
I have the Orion backpack and it works well for my M17. I don't care for the CD sleeves. I have found that my power supply pretty much takes up the center compartment. My mouse, the G9x Gamer, doesn't fit in the mouse pouch. However, I was able to fit it in a different pouch
-
Is there only 1 size for the messenger bag?
-
Yeah I think there is only 1 size-fit-all for both the orion backpack and messenger bag. Its designed to carry 15 to 17" laptops... correct me if im wrong....
-
Heres how messed up the head is

I feel your pain, mine is probably even worst..
Oh well. Dell should give us a one year warranty on the bags
-
The bag I use is a messenger bag from Superdry. The Haversack bags will fit it, the side bags I'm not sure about. They look quite good as well, and are subtle (more so than an alien head, in my opinion). I can fit the M15x, Note pad, textbook, mouse, mouse mat, power supply and if I really push it, hard drive plus associated leads.

EDIT: Just seen on the US site that they have Laptop bags as stock that will be arriving soon (First two bags on this page: http://shopsuperdry.com/news/)
