Alienware forums are the only forums for multiple sites, where the people who own the specific brand all gang up and talk HATE about the brand. You go to Clevo, MSI, ASUS, APPLE, even HP and stuff, and people talk neutral or love about the product.
Such a phenomena is no mystery. Employee's at DELL must all be "yes men" or something.
hey DELL, you want to know what makes a laptop good, get it proofed by people who care, like people from NBR, who dedicate their life to reviewing laptops.

Sadly the " Alienware " forum is dying , slowly .. but surely. It feels so lonely in here lol. But I'm not giving up hope that easily. I still love what's left of my two 18" Alienware.

At least you guys have decent FHD panels in your laptops
Only our 4k panels are good lol.

the older Models I hear had the best picture, like the M17X-R2Last edited by a moderator: May 13, 2016Rengsey R. H. Jr. and bloodhawk like this. -
I think so, the M15x i gave to my sister had an amazing display.
But the main advantage comes from the type of connector Dell/Alienware uses, that opens them to a lot of panel options. -
Funny you say that @bloodhawk as I love the 1080p screen on the Sky X9 and and absolutely despise the 4K screen. Not only is the 4K resolution terrible for such a small screen, the low refresh rate, inability to overclock it, and image quality seem much better to me on the 1080p screen.

Agree on every point, if i didn't use a 144hz stand alone display i would hate it too.
But i am using the manifest hack to scale the applications i use and everything works great. Main reason i hate the FHD is because of the heavy color banding that is easily visible in a lot of places and specially my renders. Maybe im just a little too picky, but even on my desktop i have an EIZO professional display and a 144hz display for gaming. But when i need to take my laptop out side for live video previews and composite previews on shoots, the 4k display becomes invaluable.
The low refresh rate does become an issue if i try to play games on it, but that super rare and i ultimately just use my 144Hz monitor. I do understand this wont be the case with everyone, but then again there arent any 17.3 inch FHD panels out there that support anything over 72% adobe coverage.
For the general user to whom color accuracy isn't necessary, or people who dont notice color banding that easily it wont be an issue at all. But for people like me who nit pick the heck out of images, videos and renders, it just bugs me too much.Mr. Fox likes this. -
I prefer 4K panels even though I dont have one now. I hate pixelations of interfaces outside of gaming. Scaling is good enough for me with videogames. Hard to see when it is in motion. Also it acts a bit like natural anti aliasing so you can keep that turned of to eliminate the jagged edges.
Only the FHD screen in the AW15R2 is not really good. At least mine is okay in terms of color after some tweaking but the brightness is measures around 250nits. I prefer 300. he AW17R3 on the other hand has a damn fine FHD screen.
But blame the manufacturers for that. They switched something with fabrication all current fhd panels from LG kinda suck.Mr. Fox likes this. -
I prefer FHD only until Volta / Navi are here.
-
Decent FHD panels? Yeah 180 Nits panels is very high end in a expensive laptop created 2015/16 http://www.notebookcheck.net/Alienware-15-R2-Notebook-Review.153808.0.html A very cheap CrapBooK at about $ 750 have better panels
High end price but low end parts is the new mantra from Dell.
-
Ya dunno why they did that with the AW15R2 panels. That seems very silly.
The 17R3 panels are nice.. well at least my LG 1080p one is.
Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk -
Yeah you should asked Dell if they have and use QC before they mounting parts on their most expensive models before shipping. This is the same as put on very cheap Chinese tires on an Rolls Royce. This very cheap panels should be stopped before they entered the doors of their fabric.
-
ALl laptops now come with LG panels. Not with the extremely subpar Samsung panels from that review.
But getting 300nits panels is very difficult now. Due to excessive blue light and controversy that it causes eye problems they changed the way some of these panels are lit. Thus lowering the brightness. Its not Alienware specific but a lto of brands are stuck with these panels. Also to get a replacement yourself is now very difficult.
Very annoying. -
It is getting difficult to get good quality from any brand now. I'm not very sensitive to differences in display quality, but stuff like backlight bleed, severe banding, blurry text and dull colors are hard to overlook.

my OCD cannot accept any backlight bleeding.
Had 3 displays changed in my previous Alienware 18 until we reduced it but there was some left.
On my current and previous P870DM laptops, 0 backlight bleeding. -
Go 4k bud, gonna love that panel.

I agree here its such a waste. On a big ass TV it looks cool I guess but even then so its not like the switch to HD where Im like OMG I need to watch this in 4K.
I only bought my Sammy 4K TV cuz I researched the hell out of it and it has super low input latency for PC gaming etc.
On a laptop I hate it. When I had my 15R1 and was complaining about the throttling they did one system exchange that came back with a 4K screen and I complained about it lol.
They were like "Its an upgrade". I'm like "The hell it is!". I ended up telling them I was going to keep the lid and LCD and put it on the laptop they send me. They said OK. LOL!
On a partially related note the LG FHD panel that came with my 17R3 is nice.
For once no backlight bleeding. No Ghosting. Great colors. No complaints.
The first panel I had on my 15R1 sucked. It was a Sammy and it had horrible bleed and ghosted like crazy. Mix that with the throttling and I was in Hell. Surprised I didn't hating BGA / AW like those two.

well, you have a Eurocom Clevo, the X9 right, I have the X6, and it's crazy awesome. It's actually REALLY good. It's jjst a shame Alienware didn't make a MXM / desktop version available. they were rumoured too, and then didn't. Remember they had a page on their site and everything.Rengsey R. H. I'm thinking that their next model will offer that. Since they was late in the game during that time period, they might as well work on it and release it later .. ( New breed ) -
With pascal on the horizon I sure hope they wait to see if a pascal desktop card comes out as opposed to trying to be late to the party by making a refresh that has a desktop 980.Rengsey R. H. Jr. likes this.

the 108 is not even 200W so why would they release a desktop variant. Can you imagine if they did that.... same performance as the desktop card. HAHAH would be insane. -

We will find out hopefully before this year ends. -
DELLIENWARE's engineers is in full work creating next BGA models with fully BGA package... AW13R3, 15R3 and the flagship 17R4
why use energy and a lot of money to create and release a desktop machine? They have the fabulous G/A if you want better performance...

I was holding out hope for a while that they would release a killer 18" again but at this point, I think they are done. If they had anything big planned I would think someone from Dell that used to frequent these boards would at the very least come on and tell people to have faith and drop a hint or something. After all, they do see the negative perception on here and know people are leaving for other brands. A little damage control you know. Crickets are not a good sign.
-
There was a page? Where can I see that? -
Dell/Alienware is not interested in hardcore performance enthusiasts... They want a completely different public now. Hardcore enthusiasts demand something real that Dellienware can't offer them. Those who buy an AW nowadays, are interested in something entirely different than hardcore enthusiasts. Just a ordinary machine they can game with and who have a cool factor. It was taken down a few days after when they had announced the AW18 with dual 980ms back then. -

They had it up for like a week, and were even taking orders. The prices were insane, they had offered desktop 6700K or 4790K I forget and 980M.. then after a few weeks cancelled all the orders. The page was removed too but I do not know how long it stayed. People were talking about it. Then DELL said it was all a mistake, some bullcreep like that.
It was like all hype. They REALLY could have taken over the market if they did it. Too bad. I guess they will wait for another company to invent something new, a efw bright minds coming together to form a new IP and sell to DELL.... like alienware did when they SOLD OUT.TBoneSan and Rengsey R. Yep It was a typo..a blatant failure.
How can they deliver Z170 / Z97 chipsets when they lock the haswell machines with the secure feces and so many borked EC fan profiles, fans / OC Voltages, at-least the last BIOS made to AW17 fixed the B$ fan profiles, still worse but better than dead.Last edited: May 15, 2016Papusan likes this. -
To be honest, that's what any company would do. They appeal themselves to to the biggest market and try to make as much profit as possible.
People who game on a laptop is already a minority, people who game SERIOUSLY on a laptop (ie: us) is an even smaller population within the said minority.Rengsey R. H. Jr. likes this. -
Yes I remember configuring an Alienware 18 with a 4790K. The configurator was up for 2 days before it was scrapped and deleted all traces. There were a few blog/facebook posts about it as well, but it has all been erased from history now. The prices were astronomical..somewhere in the 5000 range when I configured mine. I was super excited, then super bummed when I found it was a mistake/joke.

it was no mistake or joke, they were screwing with us, maybe even had an intent to see how many people were willing to purchase. They maybe cancelled it because not many were interested. -
believe it was a mistake in the alienware 18 configuration page, not an actual machine that supports Z97.
on the other hand, dell ideastorm seems to be a cancer, maybe that's why the manufacturers themselves don't read the opinions posted there -
AW18 with 4790k, is that what this is about? Yes or no, we do have screen shots of it: Alienware 18, now with Maxwell GPUs (Officially) and a new BIOS p.23 posts 223/224. Post created by Game Aug 19, about a week later it was all moot. FB/AlienBook had 'confirmation' for the k-option ... as if ...

That option though, how can a chipset be compatiable with an MQ CPU and a desktop Z97 class LGA1150. ROFL !!
-
In all fairness, @ Fox was all over that thread like a bum on a bologna samich; his thought train was if 'add $900' for 4790k then it meant it would get a socketed mthrbrd; if Hotwell-K was a $275 cpu, you add $625 more for the mthrbrd it needs.Mr. Fox likes this.

Dell should have been imposed a fine for false advertising!!
-
Hey Poppy, I told u all in the 'How Far Backwards' thread, they pad their bras & stuff a sock in their tight jeans like Tom Jones, then sing their little song: 'what's new pussycat' ... if they're gonna false-advertise their Flagship desktop, why not all the rest? I caught Joe Olmstead (Alienware Director of Product Planning) twice running his yap about the 1500w power supply, how their R2 comes with the max power you can put inside your residence. Patently false. Like that gold-rated psu is the bomb.
1600watts is the most, as in EVGA 1600
Besides, if 1500 is the 'max', it's gonna get hot, huh?, then why is it the only 1500w on the market with a smaller 120mm fan? ... even 1200's come with a 140mm (but it leads a sheltered existence right? doesn't compete on the open market, so they have a license to ill ... it's the quantity of watts they're pushing, not the quality). To me, this top alien who tells us to 'consume' gets a new nick-name:
You see, since that psu draws in 1700watts from the wall? True, 1700's the max you want in your residence, yet he spins a sow's ear into a silk purse for the media, like 1500w output is the most ... huh?Pax 2014: "we gave it a one point five kilo-watt psu / we designed this to run w/the maximum amount of power you can put in a residence without plugging into your laundry port / because that would be a bad thing *chuckles*."
Semanticsware.
EVGA 1600 T2 FTW > 1769w in = 1627w out = the true 'maximum amount of power you can put in a residence' ... true is the opposite of what? > false
They wanna cost-cut, intentionally place a smaller 120mm psu fan (serves double-duty as a case fan, yes?) then remove the 3rd 120mm case fan we see in the false-adverts & still say the R2 has 'optimal thermals' ... ... aliens ain't nothin' but hot air and nothin' special to cool it down with ... u can tell 'em I said so.
It can't even hit all 1500watts on its 12v side like ax1500i can ... theirs hits 1440w only. We're men, & ain't nuthin worse then tellin someone your package is bigger then it actually is (one point five kilowatts!, as if --> one point fo' fo' @AlienJoe <--) when u do say it's bigger than it is??? ... we know why, don't we: inferiority complex & all the rest. 'Compensate' when you're less-endowed than your competition, rightful competition.

Why do people buy Alienware desktops lol?
It honestly is not that difficult to build a desktop.
Especially now a days with youtube etc.
I can totally understand fixing a laptop as that leaves little room for error, but a desktop?
Come on people try. You get so much more for less when you build it yourself.

Yeah a mistake like that doesn't just happen on their FLAGSHIP product at the same time other companies are doing the desktop cpu thing too. They did it just to slow sales to other companies, or had intended on offering it for real, or it was a stunt plain and simple.
hahaha I friggin love you man ! Couldn't have said it better.Last edited by a moderator: May 19, 2016 -
Unless I can put a D15 there, probably not. It's an attractive option though, knowing that the motherboard swap is very easy. And I have more hard drives than that thing could handle
Airflow looks very... unoptimized, only one exhaust fan and two intakes.
With that said though, I'll probably buy one when prices tank on current gen Alienware Area 51 with X99/980 on micro center.Cass-Olé likes this.
