Well that would be great but I don't really play any "heavy" games. I mainly deal with multimedia kinda stuff so thats why I felt I didn't need the 8800.

If you chose not to go with the 8800 then I would really recommend the 8700 it holds a good edge against the 8600 and would make your laptop better for the test of time. Mr. Water is extremely satisfied with his m15x w/ 8700 gpu laptop, so it would probably hold up to your needs and then some to take care of future games.

I'd recommend buying a single 2GB stick - you can use that in conjunction with one of the 512MB sticks the notebook comes with for a total of 2.5GB.
Screen real estate - much more viewing area with the WUXGA vs. the WXGA+. WUXGA is capable of displaying true HD 1080p; on WXGA+ it will be scaled down.
    1. Nope, stick with the 2.2GHz or 2.4GHz. You won't notice the difference and it will not help much, if at all, with games.
    2. Yes you can buy stuff separately.

Alienware doesn't do the whole coupon thing . . . as a matter of fact they rarely have any sort of discounts. Plan on paying full price + tax + shipping.

No, you can't have an university email . . that is fraud. Stop talking about it on these forums.
The 8600M-GS is a relatively weak card, it's not good for the latest games. Get the 8700M-GT as noted, it is far better.
All screens are glossy as noted.

just wondering are they going to offer a bigger srceen coz the thing i like about the M7950 is the 17inch display.

im not sure if i should wait for the new m15x or go for the M7950 and i know that the M7950 is being discontinued any chance of sale and when is it going to be discontinued in the UK. think i might go for the m7950 i really like the screen size.

just looked at the m15x and created my own come to just over 3000 dollars that about £1600 with:

    512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800M GTX
    15.4" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD (1200p)
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz (4MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
    2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 1024MB
    Windows Vista® Home Premium
With Express Card Media Center Remote Control
    200GB 7200RPM (16MB Cache)
    8x Dual Layer Burner (DVD±RW, CD-RW)
    AlienFX® Illuminated Keyboard

any chnace this will come to about 1500-1600 pound when its released in UK i really like it the only thing idont like is the screen size whatcha guys think about the m7950 having a 17inch screen and this one only having a 15.4inch screen?

I rekon itll be nearer £2k for that spec
Its similar to the spec i wanna get.
You know us in UK alwasy seemed to get ripped off :(
Its a shame they dont ship to UK from USA , even if we get stung for abit of duty i still think itll come in cheaper than Alienware uk will be selling it to us for.
    As for the screen size
I personally want 15.4 for me i prefer it and its a more manageable size if you wanna carry it anywhere
For full size gaming i guess you could always hook it up to a plasma via HMDI
Im going to be doing that with mine for sure :)

    PhantomGnome

Its not M7950, it's M9750, the 7950 is the GFX card

Do a quick search of the forum for M17x, there are hundreds of posts about the M15x's big brother that everybody is waiting for.

Do expect price gouging when it eventually gets to the UK, we get ripped off for everything.

Guess this makes me a 'notebook consultant' consultant ;)

I'd hold out for the M17x, I'm waiting till I can get a Black Skullcap with SLI 8800GTX's

i'm very interested in the new alienware m15x (prolly going to wait for the 1,499 one to come out, pretty low on budget), but i'm worried about it's weight and size. how big is it (what's the approximate dimension) and how heavy is it?

Ditto the silver makes it look like a plain old dell. I don't want to spend 3k for a dell twin. Thankfully I'm not in the market till late march so hopefully the black skullcap case will come by then. Crosses fingers ><

Not sure if this means anything one way or the other but the configuration page for the $2,149 version of the m15x no longer has the "May delay your order 21 days" note associated with the 8800m upgrade. Yesterday it showed the upgrade to the 8800m delaying your order until the first week in March.

There are still notes for delays relating to the Smart Bay drives and the Blu-Ray optical drives so perhaps they've made some progress with availability of 8800m GPU's.

That's good. Maybe Nvidia was behind on their shipments. They must have been hammerd with everyone starting to sell the 8800m at the same time, not to mention the SLi configs starting to roll out. Wonder why they would have a delay on the Smart Bay drives though. I'd have thought they would stock up ahead of time for those accessories.

Looks like Alienware has removed the $2099 configuration off their website! I guess every change they make to their site is one step closer towards the black case+skullcap option! Only time will tell!

Also, it seems that they may be preparing to release their $1499 config soon since they removed their $2099 price point.

hmm thats interesting. However you can still get to the 2099 page. just not through the main site. It was probably because the processor they were using in that config got discontinued.

To add on to Velacio and answer agentxavier. It also can be put onto stealth mode which cuts down on power even more. While the light option is off too!

    Hey guys,

First off, I plan on ordering my m15x in a month or so when i get the money :D

anyways, I have a question about the customization page. Under 'Alienware Command Center', it has the FX lighting system checked and greyed out, and underneath it has a list of colors to choose from. Now I consider myself to be a pretty knowledgeable guy, but I cant figure out what the heck those color options are for! At first I thought it was the backlight for the keyboard, but then i found out that you can change that to whatever you want. I cant be the only person wondering what those options are for, can I? Could someone shed some light?!

Oh, and another question. For you folks who are up to date on computer hardware, what would you guess the mx15 would score on 3Dmark06? I havent been keeping up with the latest hardware since I built my desktop two years ago ;)

    Thanks for the help!

the colour you can choose is simply the color scheme you will find when the notebook wiill arrive! you can change it then ;)

in 3dmark06, mrwater with an 8700GT scores 5500.
8800M GTX will probably scores 9000, up to 10000 when the drivers will become mature

GRRR so i guess I just realized we dont get any Optical out jack for sound like with the M17X system. So our only option is to use the crummy headphone jack since I guess the HDMI doesnt seem to work with sound either -_-

    Ohhhhh! that makes sense, haha

a 9000? daaaamn! and the processor wont have anything to do with that score correct? I dont plan on getting the extreme, a little to costly for my budget. The T7700 looks nice to me :D

in 3dmark06 the processor have less influence on fps in game test, but there are 2 CPU test, and they count on the final score.
to me best compromise is the T7700 with the 8800M GTX! I saw some tests of the extreme processors, but the improvment is not too much! the difference is higher beetween T7500 & T7700 than T7700 & X7900, even OC @ 3.2GHz! ;)

are you sure? because I've a notebook with an optical jack. it's the same as a normal jack, but when you put in an optical output, there is a red light.
