I was just on with a friend with AW. He infromed me that the m17x is about to be released and he says a fair ETA is 2 weeks.

Hope this has not been posted B4 and is helpful to you all.

    Peace

Cool! So first or second week of march then. If this eta doesn't work out I might just take the plunge on the m15x :(

    :D YAY!!!

Mind you that ties nicely with the predicted Q1 that they said all along.

Did your "source" say anymore about the M17X?

That info is in keeping with the peoples general "guesstimate" (on here) of end of Feb, early March. Lets hope it matures!

I wonder if there will be any extra exciting features to make it that little bit more special, like the ability to overclock, or fetch the paper :D.

I guess if you overclock it enough it will even do toast ha ha ha

I must admit, it needs to have something special to be better than the XPS1730, which has a very similar spec.

Exactly what I was thinking OB, once the M1730 has the X9000, the M17x could get in a sticky mess unless it has some great feature over it (considering you can OC the M1730). Otherwise people will be thinking twice :)

Can the M1730 bring you to a deliver a night of wild, unbridled passion?

    Ha! I thought not!

What I'm wondering about is where the m17x price range is going to lie. Reckon it'll be comparable to the m15x for similar specs? More expensive on account of it being bigger, or cheaper on account of it being bigger? Hmmmmmm.

In theory you'll only have to wait until the end of the week or the next, assuming that the predicted timing is correct but, we've waited this long so...

I'm thinking it will be around the same price of the XPS1730, just not a Dell lol

Unless of course you've got a crystal bal handy ha ha ha ha

This is pure speculation on my part but I get the feeling that the primary reason for the delay of m17x is because of Dell and the m1730. Last week I noticed that there was an actual advertisement for the m15x on Dell's website. Previously, they had only a link to Alienware's website but did not otherwise mention Alienware products on the Dell.com website. Today, I received an email from Dell (not Alienware) advertising and touting the m15x. Previously, Dell's newsletters/emails had stuck to Dell products and Alienware's email notifications had stuck to Alienware products. Those lines appear to be getting blurred by Dell.

All of this could be coincidental and have nothing to do with the delay of the m17x but if Dell is blurring the lines between itself and Alienware, that calls into question to what extent Dell would be motivated to introduce a product that would compete with its own "Beast", the m1730, which it has been touting as the choice for those wanting notebooks with 8800m SLI.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but the preview page of the M17x (also had M15x preview before the release) on the Alienware webpage has be TAKEN out. I don't know if anyone notcied this, but I bookmarked that page and now it doesn't exist, it only routes you back to the AW main page. Could this signal the near release of the M17x?

Yeah, I just noticed that too. I even went through Google to see if I could still get to the webpage, but it just went to the Alienware home page every time. Who knows, maybe the m17x is going to finally come out!

Nice lol, I thought I was the only one that noticed it lol Yeah who knows, it might actually be out soon, maybe this week lol I'm going to drop 5k on it as soon as its out. I thought I would be happy with a sager or a 1730 or even a M15x, but when I thought about it, I would regret it as soon as the M17x comes out. Going to get a max specced M17x without bluray!

Or...might it mean the m17x has been scrapped until further notice so there's no further need for a "preview" page?

I really hope not but it makes one wonder. There would seem to be no reason to take the preview page down at least UNTIL the m17x was actually launched for ordering. At this point, there is not one available reference to the m17x anywhere on Alienware's site, which was not the case at anytime leading up to the launch of the m15x.

I just have a feeling that Dell/Alienware may have made a decision to focus on the "top of the line" 15 inch notebook through Alienware and the "top of the line" 17 inch notebook through Dell's m1730. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

They probably took the page down because it was a preview page for the m15x as well. Why keep the preview page up for a notebook that has been out for a while? They'll probably put a new one up for the m17x.

this sounds like the most logical explanation to me. Heres hoping we get some concrete information (release date) on this new preview page. this wait is killing me, but i have to wait another month or so to order it for my graduation present anyways.

im just hoping to God they don't release preconfigured notebooks with ripley design and then make us wait like 2 months for full config...now that would suck.

Just wondering, why isn't everyone flocking to the m1730?

Seems pretty tempting to me, especially with the 12% student discount, I could get dual 8800's for a bit more than most people are paying for the m15x...

i had a m1730 for a brief period, and my friend has one as well. firstly the power brick alone is as big as a playstation, and heavier. the laptop is monstrously big, which isn't that big of a bother really, but it can't even be called a laptop. the thing heats up and feels like a volcano is taking a crap on my thigh. The blasted thing couldn't even handle Oblivion at max settings with SLi8700mGT. Lights are nice though. m17x won't be too much more expensive than the m1730, and looks much sleeker.

I really don't care about the power brick, and I'm sure it could handle it with dual 8800's no problem...
And I think the m1730 looks pretty nice, might be a little too bulky but oh well..
I'm probably gonna hold out for the m17x anyway, it's just getting very tempting...

i agree, I like the 1730 design. since i wont be taking that laptop anyway daily, im fine with its strong solid design. i would not put a huge laptop like that on my lap anyway. 8700 stink for gaming though. also the power supply is way to big. i dont see any reason why it cant be smaller. ultimately i went with the m15x because i like alienware (yes i know dell owns them). also i could not accept the fact that i had to get 8800 gtx cards in sli. why not a single one? +1000 is somthing ill never spend on gpu's.

I think the m1730 is ridiculously ugly. When I first saw some small thumbnail pics I thought "hey cool, urban camo!" and then I saw close up shots and realized it's more like some weird aquatic... thing. Not too big a fan of the thickness either. I do agree that the price is tempting but I've sworn to myself that if I give up on the m17x I will only buy the m15x. I'll use the rest of the cash for a desktop.

Nah, I can't wait that long. I don't have my own computer right, haven't had my own for a couple of years. The money that I got in order to purchase the computer is sitting in my checking account going to waste. If it's not out by the end of next week I'll have to pull the trigger on the m15X.

I guess I'm in a the middle then.. I'll only be able to get the laptop in a few months so will be able to get the black skullcap/ripley depending on reviews..
BUT I'll be gettin it way after you guys !!
Oh well.. You can't have a piece of cake and eat the whole thing..

And another thing.. I'm not familiar with the gaming shops in US so was wonderin if you'd recommend buying Crysis, Bioshock and what not: Online, from a big gaming store or from AW ?
    I'm guessing not AW ;)

I'm in a similar position "W", i'm currently saving the money for a M17X, i'm also going to wait for Glossy Black Skullcap to be released, so intheory by June i will have the money, and AW will have released all of the options.
There may be some reviews as well so i'll have a better idea of what i'm buying and any problems.

I still want to know what i'll be buying though, this waiting game is no fun Grrr Argh!!!

Yea !! Options = Fantastic !!!! And all this hub-bub over the video drivers & Crysis on High/Very high will be settled.. I hope *Fingers Crossed*

In my case actually my parents will be getting the laptop as a birthday, college & christmas present :p (It's hella expensive !!) So I'll only be paying for around a ¼ of it..

If I were to take a guess I'd say that you and me, are at abt... Phase -6 !! ;)

"Phasers to stun, Mr Spock" ha ha ha :D

You have awsome parents, i'm having to save for mine, well, me and my wife, I recon it will take 4 months or so to save up.

I've got a max figure of £3,500 to spend and no more so i'm hoping that it's not too expensive?

Talking of Crysis, Absinthe42 seems to be playing Criysis well, even though it's not giving 400fps lol I'm going to try maxing Doom 3 and seeing what it looks like!!! :)

    Hehe.. £3,500 huh ? Hmm.. What's that in $.. around $6500
That would seem like enough to get you a killer notebook..

Well the funny thing is, I was looking to get an AW desktop and then my dad suggested I get a laptop.. Along came the new AW m15x & m17x and I was sold !! My dad didn't know it'd turn out to be the more expensive of the two options :p

Well hope AW doesn't let us down with any of the cases !! Really want to see how the gloss black will battle it out with 'em fingerprints
Haven't read this full thread but any news on there being other paint/color options later on ?

I got my old Dell XPS 1710 stolen a few weeks ago, am holding out for the m17x now, if Alienware release it without the black skullcap and only in preconfigured... I might just be forced to go for the m1730.

Nice, although if you go for the ALX desktop, fully loaded it over £7K UK!!! so he's not done that badly lol

I just like the glossy black, it's different from other machines, in grey etc.

I have posted the ides of removable lids, for painting, swapping etc.

I'd wait if you can bare it, the XPS1730 still has issues with SLI graphics and it's not a nice to look at, unless you like it that is lol

Shame about your machine though. Guess it's not the machine but the contents eh?

Yep the M1730 really is abit of an ugly brick... I would need to lug it around alot, so again the m17x wins! I just reeealy hope they release it with the black skullcap, the other designs don't do it justice.

Luckily I did a format of my XPS a few days before it got stolen, so I had copied all important files onto an external HDD, quite lucky!

Sorry to hear about your Dell man..
IMO I'd reckon that AW would release it with full options incl. cases and color options (gun silver & gloss black).
They could be released as pre-configured - Though, as was stated in another thread, that seems to be a one time market strategy.
I'm guessing AW must've realised it'll only work once and should be using all these weeks/months to test out all possible configs for the m17x alongside shipping 'm15x's.
I'd even venture they'd try another trick - Release the cases first to create a spat of new m15x sales and then release the 'm17x's so they get the best of both.
Either way the m17x *should* come out with all guns blazing :)

Just a couple of thoughts whizzing round in my head.. Nothing solid..

@OB - Thts loco !! :D Well in the case of the desktop I'm sure I would've only been given the choice of customizing the Area-51 7500 starting at $1399 :p

miprs4 - if Dell have released the 880GTS in SLI, yet AW haven't, i'd guess there will still be driver update problems?
EpsilonVaz - Phew, that was lucky, i recon someone's watching over you?
Wraithers - I agree, it has to be better than the 1730, to make it worth getting, just looking better isn't a really good reason, unless it's cheaper lol

I've been considering the m17x or the m1730. The xps would be nice only cause its available now with the 8800sli. Why is AI taking so long to put out the 17inch? why hasn't AI added an 8800SLI option?
