Sadly, there is not a smart bay battery available for the m17x. In my haste of ordering i did not realize the battery that is on the site for purchase is simply an additional 12-volt battery, NOT smart bay. I am still very pleased with this laptop and am uber-excited, but a smartbay battery would come in handy since i am taking this to college and will mobilize occasionally.

Is it me or is the m17x just big, bulky, and worst of all, ugly?

You may be able to purchase the SB Battery designed for the M15X separately, assuming the SB drive on the M17X has the internal connector for the battery.

i agree. though the "ugly" part stems from it being big and bulky. it just doesn't have quite as fine lines as the m15x. then again, what do you expect with dual hard drives, SLI GPU's, and extreme processors?

I doubt it, If it did, theyd say as it would be in their interest. Why include a connector if not including battery option.

Bit dissapointed. If they had included it, it'd make the system an 18-cell laptop which if running binary gfx (Nb not included) and stealth mode would prob last for ages.

Which would be quite a selling point. I accept it is a dtp but it would be nice to be able to go outside with it for a bit - A continually plugged in laptop kinda loses its appeal - especially if you can build a better gaming rig for less.

Saying that, how many gaming rigs can you have on your lap, whilst watching Tv, or play in bed?

I agree though it would be useful, travelloing etc.

Maybe it will be an option IF Monty is released.

I agree also with your waiting theory, seems that if they are going to release Monty in June, when the next Vid-cast is viewed they might declare a "new" new model lol

Did they mention what's in June's episode, i forgot?

Nope they just said there'd be one and about sending questions mid may -

As regards putting on lap - hmm.. wasn't there somthing about high heat laptops and sterility and yellowing of the skin, don't think Id risk it,

I suppose the absence of the smartbay batt isn't really that big a thing - I've been thinking of buying an external batt pack - travel home and back regularily so itd be pretty useful on the bus, but I don't how I'm gonna carry them -

not being funny or anything but I'd have to seriously consider whether the backpack could carry both, the two together would weigh 19 pounds!!!!! Which is fairly heavy if you're also lugging a suitcase, running to catch a bus

Though the pack is equivalent to 4 12cells so could play games for ages(well compared to standalone battery) on full settings.

Lol you'd deffinately get noticed on a bus, i woun't dare try that in Northampton, i would get noticed too much and there are too many speed-bumps so the lid would get bashed around...

You could always put the external battery pack in the bottom of the case, sort of in a seperate pertition, and have thecables available for use?

I didn't think about the bumps - normally by the time I get home (after 4/5 hours) You stumble off clumsily cause of all the bouncing about on the way down, spose the screen would get wrecked, or at least it be very annoying with it vibrating about the place - not such a good idea now..

It could very well be. Everyone expects Dell (along with all other big computer companies) to have Montevina in within a month or so after release; no-one is sure what AW may do

If they do, anyone who bought a M17X before that will be....Annoyed! I'm not sure if they will do a free upgrade orcheaper one... Certainly it will be a whole motherboard, RAMM swap and the M15X will deffinately not be able to have that as it's not got any spare space.

    two questions.

First, is there a reason that the smartbay battery is not an option on the m17x configurator? it has the same smartbay HDD options as the m15x so why no batt? Nevermind read the answer, most likely no batt connector in the smart bay.

Second is the x9000 worth the extra $375 premium over the t9500. This lappys two main uses will be gaming and audio recording. Recording is really the only processor intensive program i run (Protools LE, Cubase 3)

    thoughts?

most definitely not. the "extreme" processor isn't even overclockable.

Oh yes forgot about that. From what I see the only realisitc selling point of the m17x is battery life.

eh, sorry for seeming a little dumb here.... Eh, what battery life? If it's fuly loaded the battery serves as a UPS device ha ha ha

It's the looks and pure power that attracts most i would thing that and 1.5Tb or storage, something noone else has offered....Yet!
