It's funny but with the legitreviews.com article still fresh in my mind, I thought the same thing...At this point, I just wish for a solid release date. If its tomorrow, great...if its no earlier a month from now, fine...if its no earlier than 6 months from now, at least I'd know. I'm tired of trying to read between the lines of everyone's guesses, hunches, hints, etc. but its kind of like that accident along the side of the freeway, each day I can't help myself from coming here to look to see if anyone has new information that might be from a credible source.

i agree, isn't there anyone that can give us a release date.
It's not like it will give anything else away, like specs or "secret blue-prints" lol
I just want to know how long we have to wait to even see up to date pictures of the M17X!
Please?????? -
Who thinks that the posible hold up may be that Alienware is going to have the m17x be avail not only with 8800m Gtx sli, but also the penryn x9000?
Hah, I guess im putting a little to much hope into that. -
i hope too, that is what i want to get, intel is coming out with a 3Ghz quad-core mCPU, too
-
Oh yea, I read about the quad. Will be nice but quads wont be fully used to the fullest extent for a long time I believe.
-
we see lots of information a bout quad ...but does VISTA support them . or any application can get a use of them ? ...
so far nope .. -
Only professional applications that rely heavily on the CPU for calculations or number crunching can take benefit of multiple cores or processors. These are mainly 3D rendering, video editing/rendering, scientific, server applications and the like.
No games will take full advantage of nor require dual (or more) core processors to run for some time. -

The mobile quad core processor is for use with the new Montevina platform, the replacement for the current Santa Rosa platform the m15x is based on. Montevina is not going to be released until Q2.
The X9000 on the other hand should be a drop-in replacement for the X7900. -
Heck if we can just drop it right in over our x7900 that would be great.
-
I don't think that the M17x will have the X9000 to start off with. I do think that you may be able to upgrade it though later on. Only time will tell though.
-
What's the deal I hear with Nvidia 9 series cards coming are way very soon, I'm trying to decided to make a purchase on the Alienware M17X.
So I would like to know if it would be a waste to go and get one with the 8800GTXm and then a few months down the road the 9 series model comes out.
I'm not even sure if 9 series cards are coming out that soon.. but it seems to be the talk.
Does anyone have a ruff estimate of the M17x's price tag equipped with a 8800GTXM
Greets Dionysus -
It took nVidia a year to release the 8800M (more than a year actually), so I wouldn't count on them releasing the replacement quite soon.
A rough estimate? It will probably set you back to around 2.5 - 3k. -
With the 8 series, it took nearly up to december for the high end 8800M GTX to come out. If, say a 9800 GTX, comes out soon, it'll be about 10 months, even a year or more to be available on laptops. A mid-end 9 series may be available sooner.
-
Nearly up to December? But when did the systems started shipping? That's the release date.
-
-
Yes, that is correct. Don't wait for the 9800M GTX in the M17x, as by the time it will be released (the video card) Alienware will release another laptop or even two (probably in six months or so they'll have Penryn).
-
-
-
-
So it's not worth the wait, just go for the Skull cap m17x once its released?
I just don't want to spend top dollar then a few month's down the road have a new cpu laptop chipset released and gpu. But by the looks that is highly not going to happen correct? -
-
Dave has some interesting views on that matter in his new thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=217229
-
I dont even know. but for sure not anytime soon -
Do you think AW is actually working on the m17x or are they just sitting there waiting for the m9750 supplies to be sold. I just think that anybody in their right mind who was even considering buying a 17 inch AW notebook would be waiting for the m17x and would not be compelled to buy the m9750. In other words, there can't possibly be a market for a full priced m9750. Drop the price AW and get rid of them before you lose the market for the m17x.
-
Which is the Top of the line quad-core mCPU
for now & which should we get ? -
There isn't a current mobile quad core.
There will be one in a few months though.

2.4 or 2.6 or 2.9 ? -
I think 2.6 is a good price/performance compromise. Most will say go with 2.4 and save some money.

Nice one newfiejudd,
I agree that Vista has recieved alot of bad press from XP fans, possibly because it works differently etc.
I have XP for work, because the company aren't switching over yet but, i used Vista Basic at home, it was much quicker on my Inspiron 8500 than XP, even with 2Gb RAM and like you said, did not crash.
I think Vista will be great on a M17X, so long as the SLI drivers are working 100% lol -
How long it is better to wait & get the Laptop
So that the SP1 is preistalled in the recovery disc -
When is the M17X expected to be released?
-
Oodle-Bear Alienware Mug, Testpilot
Well SP1 is supposed to iron out some glitches and improve booting times but, it's not like XP SP2 was, apparently most of the fixes a minor background things. I must admit that i am waiting until June to get mine BUT, only due to saving for it lol
Just got married and we paid for everything, consequently savings are kinda lol ho hum
I'm hoping that AW release Penryn's and SP1 byt then... guess only time will tell!!
Come on Alienware, give us an idea......Please? -
I'm thinking about buying one but I can't decided on what option to upgrade I can only spend the money on one option either the Ram or the Cpu, Which one do you guys think will help me out more I do some gaming, surfing, browsing, word text.. etc. I'm trying to decided whether to get 4 gigs of ram or a 2.6 ghz cpu over the 2 gig of ram and the 2.4, and when is the m17x expected with the skull cap design and black paint?
-thanks -
Well, the m17x hasn't come out yet, do you mean the m15x? Or are you planning ahead?
-
Personally? I'd skip the design and paint options. Just take the cheapest. Splurge on hardware, especially the GPU. Get the best you can afford. These days its just all about your GPU. Any CPU thats over 2Ghz will do just fine. As for the RAM and HDD. Look at your options, but RAM can be bought cheap somewhere else and is easily upgraded.
-
Some of you might find http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=217729 an interesting read.
-
But guys, I asked what should i do.. ram or cpu
-
Buy the 2.6 ghz cpu and then upgrade the ram yourself for around $100.
-
This current trend to offer new products and then leave the customers in limbo as to when they will be available is irritating at best. This baiting nonsense is becoming rampant and has to end!
New rule: manufacturer demos product on x day---product must be available within a month of x day--if not, pre-paid customer gets 10% waiting rebate!
Anyone have better answer for this issue? -
So just buy another 2 gigs of ram later? how do I go about installing and will it void any warranty's?
-
Get the CPU. Its much harder to upgradethe CPU later on, so you may as well get the best one now.
RAM is easily upgraded, and its cheap as chips. Adding RAM to a notebook is a simple procedure, unlike upgrading the CPU. -
-
Uhm, Can I buy two gigs instead from newegg later on, and just put two more in, or do they only have a certain number of slots im confused
-
There are only two slots for ram. You could buy a 2 gig stick and only replace one of the Alienware sticks. This will give you 3 gigs of ram (they use two sticks of 1gb ram).
-
yup or like you said 100 bucks 4 gig rip the other two out
-
Exactly. That's what I'm going to do.
-
The following advertisement will be displayed 2nd Quarter of 2008:
Day 1: "Sea creature is coming"
Day 2-13 people on notebookreview "OMG WTF is coming?!"
Day 14: "Only EIGHT more days to see the creature
Day 15-21: NBR crew: "OMG this wait is killing me. I can't wait to see what this is. I will buy one for SURE"
Day 22: "AW is proud to present the AW OCTOpus 8 Core CPU 9800GTX SLI notebook weighing EIGHT pounds on an 18 inch model"
"Pricing and launch info to be released 8/8/2018"Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Haha, just the info though. The laptop will actually go on sale in 2019 but not with all configuration choices.
-
Pretty soon this is going to be the thing. Announcing the latest and greatest 10 years in advance of the actual release. This is what CES is made for! After a while you just give up and buy something else that's actually available. My one month rule would cure a lot of anxiety.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015
