    Thanks for the info.

    I have FW: VBM1AD1Q

It supports TRIM. Are there newer versions with fixes?

Also like you said it'll wipe the drive, If I make a backup image of the SSD, flash the FW then install the image back to the drive would there be any adverse effects?

TRIM was the main update with these SSD drives.

You have the lastest firmware as well

The samsung Magician is not able to detect my PM800 D:
It just says UNKNOWN DRIVE/ INVALID SERIAL NUMBER/ UNKNOWN
The SSD comes with the laptop when I ordered it.
I'm pretty sure its a PM800 cause that's what it shows in properties > hardware
    Any idea?

    The F/W is VBM25D1Q.

    The Magician Tool is crap

You can always pull the part number off the drive

Speeds look about right. CDI TRIM indicator's reliable. What firmware have you got? That's probably as good a surrogate indicator of TRIM as any.

    It's VBM25D1Q.
Seems very slow to me when I see others SSD has 250~270+ Writing speed. And I thought my 4k are abnormally slow.

Those speeds look about right to me too, my 128gb drive is a little faster on some tests and a little slower on others but overall quite consistent with your values.

The Samsung PM800 drives are reasonable but aren't the quickest ones out there.

I have a DELL branded SAMSUNG PM810 SSD with AXM06D1Q firmware.

I'd like to know, have I any chance to set this SSD to "generic" SAMSUNG version in order to use the official Samsung firmware update?

As long as I know the Samsung released their AXM0701Q firmware version.

    Thanks in advance!

EXACT same situation here. I've tried 6 different PCs with Samsung magician to update the OEM PM810 drive with no success. I've noticed its firmware is AXM06 D1Q while I see AXM06 01Q listed on forums as the stock firmware for the non-oem 470 series drive.

And as far as I know the AXM0701Q is the latest firmware. Going to best buy to attempt updating the drive if no update....absolutely horrible f/w updating process.

    EDIT:

Probably will just use the current f/w until there is more of a presence with users using the drive - I can't find any info on the Dell version of the SSD (as far as updates).

    Thanks for your reply...

Good to know that my problem isn't unique.
I hope that DELL will release their 07 version of fw update soon, or anybody clever guy will make an underground fw version to set from OEM versions to generic Samsung.

More likely it will be modded/released by the community if it happens at all.

I mean, just look at this thread for the drive's predecessor. :(

You drive does support TRIm and thats the main reason for the firmware upgrade on these older models

All new SSD drives support the TRIM feature

Yeah, it does support TRIM which is good - what sucks is we need to wipe the drive for a f/w update. Considering one is already out, I hate having to setup the OS and everything, just to wipe it later for a f/w update that was out before the OS install.

That and this update supposedly adds a decent performance bump.

Can't you just create a system image with something like Achonis and then update the drive, and then reimage your SSD? Then you have yous exact system setup back, and new F/W.

Technically yes, but I've never had good luck cloning and restoring drives with no issues.

That and if I have to reformat, usually I do a clean install to get the latest drivers and such.

Ahh ok, I just create a new updated image everytime I update my system. I keep my system pretty clean, so when ever I need to reimage, I'm starting on a fresh slate with a new clean image. Just saves the time of reinstalling everything. So if I install new updates or drivers, I'll create a new image when I get ready to go to bed. I've only had issues trying to go from noraid to a raid though an image, but it was due to drivers that it wouldn't work. Hope it goes well, just back everything up if you update the f/w.

He's right from what I have read, a lot of people on the OCZ forums for instance have issues that trace back to NOT doing a clean install...

    Hi!

Currently I'm using a PM810 with 7.7 index of hard disk in W7 performance index.
Yes, it definitely supports TRIM under W7.

    Heya!

I haven't been keeping up to date with any of the SSD stuff for about a year and am a bit out of it.

    I'm keen to build a setup for my M17x R2, running two 160gb ocz's in raid 0.

I remember that a member here discovered that, when the raid setup was left for a period of time (6 months for him) the hdd's lost their speed benefit from Raid 0 for some reason? Also that TRIM wasn't a function to be enabled with Raid 0.

Have these been fixed or are there still problems?

Well, I have had a Dell Precision M6400 with the Samsung 256 PM800 since October of 2009. I have seen the speeds getting slower and slower for this drive. I tried using the Magic Crappy Magician thing from Samsung to update the firmware so I could attempt a trim on my drive. I ended up at this thread, after reading through many many others. What is the final word on this drive? Should I throw it down my garbage disposal and replace it, or can I update the firmware and attempt to salvage it?

It's a "good performer" rather than a "speed demon"...

There is a firmware update, yes. If your drive came with your Dell, you need to apply the Dell firmware update. Did you install it?

If so and the drive still seems slow, you can try a couple things. First thing is to run a disk benchmark on it to see if it's actually performing up to spec or if it's really slow. Crystal Disk seems to be the preferred one. Choose 5 runs of 100MB, click the top "All" button and screen print and post the results - obviously, nothing else going on when you do this...

Depending on the results (essentially, writes way lower than reads), you may need to do a "secure erase" of the drive to reset the SSD to a "factory fresh" condition.

Next is, what OS are you using? If Win7, the alignment shouldn't be an issue. If XP, it almost certainly is off. I forget if Vista does alignment correctly but since it does so little correctly, I'll guess no. To check this, download diskpar.exe from diskpar and run diskpar -i c:. Select the proper partition (skipping OEM, the 100MB win7, etc...) and get the StartingOffset value. Divide this by 4096 and if you don't have a remainder/decimal, you're aligned. If not, you'll need to align the disk to get the best write performance out of the drive.

Finally, depending on the OS, you may need to tweak some OS settings. Pre-Win7, windows didn't know what an SSD was and some (many?) OS settings expect spinning rust for storage and dont' work well with an SSD. These need to be changed and there are many other guides here on how to do that.

One more thing, put your PC's config in your sig so people can have a better understanding of where you're coming from...

Actually completely depends on the version of the drive. If you have an earlier model like mine (VBM15D1Q - Generation 1 NAND drive), you're out of luck on getting any TRIM support.

The only way to get your drive performance back in that case if doing a manual 'Tony' TRIM. This link has the instructions.

You'll need to purchase Perfect Disk and download this tool to do it.

How much it will lower the lifespan of your drive I have no idea, but the forum link if from an OCZ engineer suggesting it for their gen 1 drives. PerfectDisk is supposed to be SSD safe, and the erase tool writes FF to every byte of unused space on the drive (need to check the FF check-box in the erase tool), effectively doing an SSD erase. Btw, I've been using this procedure for several months now with no issue, and it has definitely help maintain drive speeds.

Use Crystal Disk Info to find out what version of firmware is on your drives.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have been working all weekend and haven't had the time to back-up my drive in order to try the instructions from "beelsr". I think I do have the older model, VBM15D1Q, so I might have to try the manual Trim. Again, thanks for the help.

I remember when I had 2 seagate drives with the "clicking" problem I used this hash to force flash a bios (this was to flash a retail drive to the dell firmware)
    FDLH -m HOLLIDAY -f 0005SDM1.LOD -i ST9500420AS -b -v

This was using the boot disk that was created when you downloaded the dell firmware.exe

I am not sure if there is something similar that can be done with the samsung "magician" or not, just putting it out there for those with better knowledge than me.

edit.. just remembered that I do still have those drives (sitting in external enclosures with backups on them..lol)

Could somebody please post the generic Samsung firmware or how they got passed this?

    Dear all,

I have a Samsung SSD PM810 256 GB (470 series) in my dell Latitude laptop and I'm searching for a firmware updater.

I tried with Magician but the drive seems to be locked by dell. My firmware is AXM06D1Q

Is there a way to unlock the drive and flash it with a normal Samsung firmware?

    Thx

    Hi *,

I need a replacement for a broken OEM Samsung SSD:

    MMDPE56GTDXP-MVBD7
    256 GB
    F/W: VBM9LD1Q (= OEM for DELL)

Can someone with a DELL Notebook (e.g. Latitude XT2 Tablet/Laptop) support me on this - as I've bought the SSD on eBay and obviously don't have a DELL computer @home.

(When asked for support, Samsung points to DELL and DELL is requesting a service tag...)

I'm located in Germany but I'm also in London/UK quite often.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Michael

the drive is supposed to have a 3 year warranty on it, have you called Dell about it ?

You can use any 2.5 inch sata SSD drive in your laptop, you do not have to go with a dell version.

DELL wants me to tell them the service tag (which I cannot do, because I don't own a DELL computer). I need an 1.8" drive for my HP EliteBook 2530p but I am not keen on buying just another device...
