Ah man! I just bought my alienware after waiting for ages. I am gonna be very much frustrated if they refresh their M17x..![]()
-
I'm looking at an M17x - the M18x is a bit out my weight limit, and that setup especially would be way out of my price range.
Judging by the current leaks, the specs I'm looking for are something like an Intel i7, 780M (single), 8-16gb 1600mhz ram, and 1tb+ of storage.
Are the prices expected to go up with these new models? And can I still negotiate the price down as a Canadian buyer? I've never really haggled prices down... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Prices usually inflate slightly due to the economic times, there is no major reasons for it to jump massively unless they radically change materials.
-
if they do go up they should at least make the 1080p screen the starting point. Not the dumpy 900p screen.
-
I'm actually pretty excited for the new models, might end up getting a new M14
Hopefully they address the cooling and throttling issues in the new models and get something stronger than a 750M. -
I'm going to be buying the R3, probably around when school is about to start up again, for the deals. -

Why would NVIDIA say that if it wasn't true? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Because they want to sell "new" chips.
They will be quoting a specific edge case and likely comparing to a DDR3 version of the 650. -
That would be very misleading, especially since they mentioned Crysis 2. I'm still skeptical to believe they'd intentionally mislead consumers to think there's such a dramatic increase in performance, when there really isn't.
I suppose we will know for certain in a couple weeks... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
AMD/ATI and Nvidia have been doing it since the dawn of graphics cards.
-
-
I can personally tell you the 750m is definitely more than 15% faster compared to the 650m. It even overclocks better, and this is in the small Lenovo Y400 even! I would imagine it performs better in laptops with better cooling.

I have a feeling this big news could be the next x51 teaming up with Steam (Steambox).
It's a perfect time to steal the thunder from the new consoles being showcased at e3. Especially that the new consoles are so underwhelming.
Or course I have no hard evidence to back this up what so ever. Just a semi educated hunch. -
I just read that Steam plans to encourage developers who sell their goods on Steam to offer Linux as an alternative. It was announced yesterday that Football Manager 2014 will support Windows, Mac and Linux. That's a first for Linux. -
There is meant to be a low/med/high package that steam will be selling. Low is that basic 'Piston' box, Mid, and High (which offers upgradable hardware and includes Windows).
I really much more than that. I dont know what a steam box would do that a Alienware running Big Picture mode won't. I think the big thing is the Linux push and trying to make a few set hardware configurations for developers to optimize for. -
Hey guys, is there going to be some way to watch the Alienware reveal live? Some live stream or something?

Just fond this online... Not sure how legit the Italian website is, but pictures look real:
Alienware M17x, M18x e M14x refresh. Nuovo design e Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M - Notebook Italia
A redesign of the laptop line was due, I'm not sure how I feel about the new ones. Just waiting for peter pics. -

They do sort of match up so it looks like the general styling is heading that way but we have no idea how early those prototypes would be.

I think Dell has cut Alienware's R&D budget to near zero and is just milking the division allowing them to only do the most minor revisions. They didn't even get a replacement for the discontinued 24" 3D monitor.
I think the time for Dell milking the aging product line is limited though. All their products heft and size will be outside of the accepted range soonish.
They need a proper gaming ultrabook. And this year, Razer is not repeating the blunder with their original gaming notebook, where they fumbled around with that secondary display for so long, their hardware was hopelessly outdated when they finally released it.
Alienware now needs to match a .66" thin, 1.8 kg 14" Ultrabook with a GTX765M and a dual SSD Raid made from black aluminum and rather fine engineering on the inside:

That said, I do much hope I'm wrong and Alienware does come out with a high build quality gaming ultrabook that doesn't stoop to a totally lame low-end GPU like their discontinued 11" and 14" models.
P.S. don't bother to try to refute the R&D issues by pointing out their recent intro of a new desktop machine: That can be made by a monkey in a garage with free product samples. That's not R&D, that's wasting time during Lunch break. -

No info on hardware yet but definitely a 14" aluminium laptop. -
I bought an M17x last summer with 3D display and a GTX680M. Performance was good in 2D, but too weak for 3D, and the weight was barbaric, I sold it inside of 2 weeks, and built a Mini-ITX system with a full fledged GTX680 instead. After decking it out with all sorts of goodies, I spent about the same, but at least its fast enough for good fps in 3D vision.
P.S. what did you think of the engineering in my picture? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The problem with tapering designs is it wastes a lot of space and you do end up with a larger machine over all.
-
That's correct... a smaller chassis also mean less room for more great components and effective heat sinks. You cannot go smaller without making compromises in features, specs and quality because all of those things require space.
-
The updated X51's are out and not surprised way overpriced....sheesh. $1399 with a i5-4470 and GTX 670, ouch. I can build that for half the price. OK now that's out of the way i'll wait for the E3 announcement and hopefully it's Steam related.
-
Hey guys, I ordered a M18x r2 back on April 19th and still waiting, but nbd. Question I have is, other than glare are there any other downsides to a glossy screen? Any upsides? And can I buy a screen protector or something to make it more matte? Just wondering if I should cancel and wait for the new ones, although I prefer the old design to the supposed new one...you don't buy a sports car just for power...you buy it for looks too, so it needs to look like a sports car

Something I'm not sure of. From the teaser:
Any idea what that is? I assume it's the lid, but if that's the case, it looks very different to the press shots.
Edit: Also, from AW's Facebook page:
-
Hmm, not sure, but it looks fierce. Probably the lid as you said.

No doubt the one above would be a great system. I was just doing a comparison build as close as I could to the X51 and I feel that the X51 is priced fair for what you get. You will always be able to build your own system for less money with better specs. I have put a lot of friends on to Alienware over the past year partly because I feel they are great value and partly because I am sick and tired of building people desktops haha
-
X51 isn't that bad. But it's seriously noodered only having a 330watt PSU. They really needed to step it up to 450. Who wants a old 670 in a brand new machine.
-
I would have to think that they would end up doing a refresh and put the GTX770 in it.
-
It's the same part they use on the m18x. Look I don't have a problem so much with the X51 in fact I love the design and it could have been soooooooooooo much more but it isn't and that's the reality. That's what makes it so frustrating.
I can take my build and change out parts and OC that mother until the case starts to swell.
-
Yeah I'm pretty sure that is the refresh. Seriously if the X51 could take a 780 ill buy one in a flash. A little CPU OCing ability wouldn't go astray either.
-
X51 with built in steam box interface + 500W supply + 770 graphics card and a couple aftermarket game controllers would stand to be a really nice alternative to these crappy consoles. Especially if they could price it right around $700-$750. Alienware, NVIDIA and Steam should partner up for a special X51 edition to compete with the new Xbox and PS4. Seeing how all 3 are shut out of the console market and it is a threat to them, I can't see why they wouldn't work together on something.
-
I agree. To be honest I really thought (and was hoping) something like that would be announced at E3. It would surely steal the show, especially since these new consoles suck a$$. But it doesn't look that way since Dell recently added a aging 670 and new Haswell.
-
-
The X51 will be running 700 series GPUs. It might have something to do with the fact that the 760 Ti hasn't been released yet.
