Alienware, What have you done??

I Used to look forward coming to the Alienware forums on here. Every week, tonnes of threads on how to improve, modify, overclock your brand spanking new Alienware beast.

Now it seems empty, the same old threads on the first page. This used to be the busiest forum here!!!

I now only venture here maybe once a month, praying that there has been a fix or modified bios to fully support the 980m SLi in my M18.

Sadly there are no new gaming beasts of the caliber of the m18x and M18, and i refuse to go back down in size.

Will this be my last gaming laptop??

Please Alienware, I am praying you have maybe listened to everyone on these forums and are secretly working on a new show stopper!!

I hope so, too. But, yeah... it does feel like this community is slowly dying because of what they now offer. There's nothing to be excited about any more.

 

Must admit, I too feel that it's pretty dead here - such a shame. I always look daily to see what's new or exciting here, but often leave without reading anything remotely interesting....that NEVER used to be the case....until the latest iteration of Alienwares.

 

Yea all my energy is going into my desktop at this point, just more stuff to play with and if I'm spending the majority of my time in one place why the heck not.

 

i probably won't do any more upgrades on my current alienware. i think i have spent over $4k on everything from the laptop itself to hdd's, ram, and the GPU.

 

Hopefully it does not do the same as the Acer forum when they moved away from mxm.

 

It is a shame it has all come down to profit and catering for the masses. They bought Alienware knowing it was an enthusiast brand. And I have been buying alienware laptops since the very first. My lime green Area 51 laptop. It wasn't even a gaming laptop then. Just looked like one. But it was the start of something good and exciting. And with me working offshore on pipe lay vessels I needed portability.

I too am concentrating on my desktop builds. But am really starting to think what do I buy in a years time when I need to upgrade my entertainment system for offshore. Because that is what it is to me while offshore. And believe me when you have 3 weeks downtime in the middle of the ocean with nothing to do then gaming really helps pass the time. Plus there is nothing better than getting paid a shed load of money for gaming during a 12 hour shift!!!

These forums really have seemed to have died off the last couple months but honestly I can't say I am surprised after Alienware locked everything down so much and got rid of almost all our customizable options.

 

They are just Idiots, now just watch Clevos raping the Alienwares with their refreshes with latest tech, that would atleast mean something for them while they are dozing off the crapload of BS laptops and roccat crap they are running of their privatised arses !!

They have full resources more than any brand here and hell they could've even stopped Intel from stopping the MQ / MX lineup (not entirely but can make the MQ/MX offerings co-exist with HQ filth), Dell has the power to deal with Intel as a major customer, but they chose the retarded ballsy way instead, going full BGA WTH !

Many new Aw owners were caught up in that nobody should criticize the new Aw models. Now it's been very quiet about these new crippled Aw models(these owners are perhaps busy with prevent throttling)... Maybe someone has opened their eyes and see what Dell has ruined? Alienware laptops is lying with a back broken now. Dell managed to destroy the Aw brand with the new crippled " CrApple" BGA models.

Let's face it, Dell just wanted to go more mainstream rather than enthusiast performance machines. Diluting the performance of the product has made it cheaper to manufacture and therefore cheaper to produce and cheaper to price to the public. What Dell did here was to rape the performance from their products with a view of making a lesser product more affordable to the uneducated masses who see 'Alienware' as a performance machine.

Basically, they've decided to try and cash in on the once solid reputation of the Alienware branding in the hope that the name will carry on the sales in lieu of significantly poorer performance, build, quality etc etc etc......

Unfortunately, Dell aren't the only brand that follow this "lets make everything thin and light and BGA" mentality. Sad, but unless you buy a Clevo or Sager rebrand, the days of high performance mobile computing have been killed off by those 'executives' high up the corporate food chain who hold the notion that tree-hugging, flimsy BGA turds are the way forward......these guys are number crunchers and not enthusiasts, hence the way the current iteration of crappy products has panned out.

Now, there will be folk here who own a new iteration machine and are very happy with it. It might fill some folks requirements, but as the phrase goes....."you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear".

While all this is true, it still shocks me how despite all the negative bashing towards DELL for releasing crippled machines that are basically a downgrade from the previous AW 18 laptops, 10s if not 100s if people bought these garbage crippled BGA laptops! Just look at the new Alienware sub forum and you'll see what I'm talking about. It hurts me to see that many put a blindfold on their heads and went ahead and bought these! I wish DELL sold none and I mean ZERO so those managers will sit and scratch their heads and know we are not foolish and bring back the bad *** Alienware laptops that we were all used to.

Even their desktop Alienware Area 51 looks like yesterware by today's standards, not upgradeable, cannot take 3 titans in SLI due to a BIOS issue that they didn't care to fix for more than 6 months, etc.

I think Alienware trying to make thin and light laptops now is not a bad decision, as the market is leaning towards that way. But the fact is: the new line up is NOT thin NOR light!! Are the people at Dell so ignorant to not noticing the competitions on the market? Having seen two of my friends buying gigabyte laptops (not even the crazier Aorus line), they are lighter, thiner, battery life is longer, more flexible drive option, easier to maintain, more powerful, less heat and CHEAPER than the Alienware now. What is left for the AW? Well it's tough as a brick but not many people acknowledge or appreciate that as it's as heavy as one too.
AW in the US has a much more reasonable price tag so it won't be an issue. But in most other regions, AW is priced like 20-30% more than the competitions which offers the same or more performance and features. So the AW users there keeps getting mocked and laughed at because they spent too much for some bling bling LED as they don't know better.

 

Yup, are the a proud owner of the last single GPU laptop Alienware made that is worth owning. Jealousy is a good enough reason to be regarded as an elitist by people that missed the boat. This is one of the hazards of waiting for tomorrow's technology in laptops. You never know what kind of new problems tomorrow might bring. That is why I ascribe to the "strike while the iron is hot" approach. If tomorrow brings something good, you can always get that later on, after watching what happens to the guinea pigs that blew their money before they knew what the outcome would be.

 

I get totally sick of reading about the new Aw models. Problems and again problems. Every single day...

Edit: A fully packed Aw17R2 with G/A and desktop Gtx980 costs where I live about $ 4,800. Is this cheap?

Made by Dell.. New trottled Aw laptops. Recommended to be used with a 240W power supply purchased at Ebay.com. But not a guarantee against hefty throttling.

Dell has misunderstood the meaning of throttle. Perhaps Dell thinks that the processor in the new Aw laptop models Shall throttle in games so that the temperature does not get too high and that the weak 180w power supply not becomes overloaded ?

 

Its funny isnt it how dell is trying to market these laptops?
They basically force you to buy a graphics amp to just use the full power from the cpu... that is so stupid. They even mention the copper heatpipes as an "amazing feature". What is this? 2005? all laptops these days have copper heatsinks, even the low tier hp's have copper heatpipes -_- really nothing to write home about. But the funny thing, the cpu and gpu throttle on the alienware LOL even with the "amazing copper heatpipes and plates".

 

It does not matter if the fan profile becomes fixed in the "modern" hybrid bios and you use a 240W power supply. Throttle no matter with this Dell trash .. .

I saw that and chuckled. Is this something new, LOL? I have never seen any Alienware laptops without one. Is it common for BGA jokebooks to not have any wired LAN option? I don't know, simply because I have no interest in any of them, haven't bothered to check, and honestly don't care how any of them are configured. Just seems like they are bragging about a standard option... sort of like " Hey! Guess what? Our notebooks come with a keyboard and a touchpad!"

It's sad that they have to manufacture phoney talking points to try and garner interest. It's a bunkrupt mans way of selling a product. Further more clearly shows how low Alienware have sunk.

But in all seriousness, RIP to the beloved alienware we used to know, i already suspected the a17r1 ranger was already kind of dubious with its somewhat locked down bios set and feature set.

 

I'm surprised the new machines have enough spare power from the PSU to power the keyboard lights.
I wonder if it downclocks the CPU more again having them on lol

 

My Aw17r1 and Mx processor works fine with Trottlestop. No problem... Worse with the new models launched afterwards with processors that throttle only they see or smell a benchmark test
Those who own the new Aw models should probably disable all Fx lighting, reduce screen lighting, reducing to only one ram chip and use only one M.2 ssd. Consider also removing the wifi. The most important is perhaps underclock processor and graphics card . Then work surely a 180w power supply without the modern hybrid bios from Dell. Guaranteed.. . Remember I'm a Aw17 " elitist"(see my sig) .

Yes, starting with the "ultrabook" movement in 2012, the answer is "yes." Here's a small anecdote: my last 3 computers did not come with a RJ45 port. And each one only has 2 USB ports. All were 11 inch models. With the exception of the Macbook Air, they are all rubbish. I have sold #3 and am looking to sell #2 soon.

Mr. Fox, I come from the future to bring you a message: most consumers appear to want clones of Apple computers (thin/light) for some bizarre reason no one can explain -- not even the consumers. "Centrino" I understood. "Ultrabook" I do not grasp why. The future is full of BGA soldered "jokebooks." Even the "performance" models are jokebooks! I woke up from the mind control and ran back here as fast as I could. Except, I was _*TOO LATE*_. Alienware, a brand a thought would be safe from this madness, was just starting down its path to join everyone else. So I snagged a AW18 as fast as I could. I wished I had awoke earlier, then I could have bought the m18xR2 like I should have!

It's like 1984 and everyone is lock-step with Ultrabooks, soldered BGA components, and low TDP limits. I am surprised my Jokebook did not come with solar panels and biodegradable/recyclable/non-petroleum/conflict-free components! It's like Intel realized Moore's Law and Physics has reached the end and rather than sink R&D into carbon nanotubes (or something else to push the envelope of computation) let's just market and sell Jokebooks. Coming soon are "Joketops" or NUCs (Note:1) for your desk.

Next, the USB and DC power ports will disappear. You will get USB Type-C and as single-port. Yes, you will charge your computer with the same port you use for peripherals. And you will only have 1 port. That's it. One port. USB Type-C. So yes, 3 USB ports and a RJ45 ports on the AW 13 (2015 model) are a feature.

It's funny you mentioned the keyboard and touchpad. The Keyboard and touchpads on my two Asus Ultrabooks are complete rubbish. That was what finally caused me to "wake up." It wasn't the lack of RJ45, or the BGA components, or limited USB powers, lack of TPM security module, or even the poor TN LCD displays. No it was the keyboard and touchpad. I found I could no longer accurately type and move the mouse. I HATED TO ACTUALLY USE MY COMPUTER FOR ANYTHING! I tried some other Jokebook brands. They weren't any better. Something needed to change and I needed to buy a real computer.
