I find it even funnier that a lot of people would not know what an RJ-45 port even is. I can see a ton of people asking "what the hell is an RJ-45 port?". They might have a better idea if you called it an Ethernet port but even then , most people rely on wireless for pretty much everything now. When Shaw came to do the install when I bought my house, he couldn't understand why I wanted a hard line run from the entry point in my house to the opposite end across the basement and up into the office for my desktop. I didn't care how he got it there but I wanted hard line.
-
In an around people's homes, I find people understand the term "hard line" the best. Even the non-computer-literate understand what you need (or figure it out quickly) when you say "You/I want/need a hard line to the network/internet/router." They know you want to plug in the modular cable. If Instead I say RJ-45 or Ethernet? Do they catch on? No so much...
Back in the day (mid '90s) ...
We used to call them TP-jacks for "Twisted Pair" since Ethernet used to have a variety of connectors: from generic AUI (DB-15), to thicknet and thinnet (both coaxial cables, usually BNC connector), to fiber optic (ST and LC connectors). Or we called them "TP modular jacks." Nowadays for most people the "Ethernet connector" is a RF receiver/transmitter on a WLAN card since we have wireless ethernet.
Technically it's a "8P8C connector" or just a "modular connector." I think it was the cabling guys or the engineers that called them RJ-45, since they were used to using those. I always thought that was a funny name to remember, but, at the time, I didn't know that "rj" meant "registered jack." I would have thought "rj" would have fallen out of use but old habits die hard. -
Test after test now show that Dell messed up with testing and development of the new Aw laptop models, a huge mistake to use a weak 180w power supply on the new AW15 and 17r2 models. The engineers at Dell (Alienware) should have been fired from job after this big mistake... It does not matter if you bought a laptop with Nvidia Aw or Amd graphics, i7-4710 / 4720 or i7-4980hq processor. Even Aw 15 should have received a free upgrade to 240W power supply. Not only those who bought a Aw17R2. Everyone who bought AW15 and 17R2should have received a upgraded 240w power supply, wherever they live in this world. It is deeply unfair that all Aw laptop buyers outside the United States and Canada do not have the same rights regardless of whether the rules are different in other countries. Dell must obtain a new certification / verification for approval of a 240W power supply with all 2015 model Aw 15 and 17r2 laptops now for all continents that sell these laptops. It is not enough to offer laptop customers, a crippled "modern" hybrid bios.
A new test of Aw 15 and now with Amd graphics. New review dated13.06.2015... http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Alienware-15-R9-M295X-Notebook.144446.0.html -

Anyways, I tell people sometimes to not use crappy cabling (thought to mention this here) and use CAT5E or CAT6 cables for best performances, and people get surprised when performance actually increases by 5%. I also tell them, cheap cabling, ruins the connecting pins over time, if it is not a tight perfect fit and keepos moving around abit , and giving. Only makes sense electrically, right. So, if you have a good/expensive notebook, and you use it on your lap and connect a Ethernet cord to it everyday or multiple times a week.. get good cabling.
I will literally GIVE YOU new , free professional CAT6 cabling if you want to pay the shipping cost. Take care of your beloved notebooks. (the longer it lasts the more upgrades I can sell, hahah !J/K but it was funny.)Papusan likes this. -
Alienware dug its own grave when they decided to abandon modular components. While soldering components in BGA form supposedly reduces physical size footprint, it really doesn't even manifest in the new laptop line. They are CHUNKY, gimped, and they even ditched the optical drive (which is inexcusable for laptops this CHUNKY). At least compete with Razer if Intel and Dell are forcing you down this path, but no. We are left with no modular upgrades, a locked and signed BIOS, chunky plastic with absolutely no metal to be found in the frame or lid, throttling CPUs, gimped GPUs, no 3rd antenna for wifi, an insufficient power supply, no optical drive, and a serious reduction in port availability. Management over at Dell has completely butchered a once proud brand and turned Alienware into a huge joke.
It can all be fixed though. All Dell has to is take the shell of the M18x R2 (adapt for other sizes as well) and change the chipset on the motherboard to support new CPUs. Leave everything else LITERALLY the same. The ports, the screen, the build quality, yes the 3rd wifi antenna, a nice 330W power brick, unlockable BIOS, socketed CPUs and MXM graphics, a blu ray drive, ports galore. Just update the chipset/processor/graphics. That is literally the only need for a continued recipe for success, but what do I know?Last edited: Jun 15, 2015Ashtrix, kenny27, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -

As a big Alienware fan myself I have lost interest in the brand with the new offerings. I guess the people who cried that the older lines were too heavy got their wish!
The new laptops should still sell though, the casual looking for a thin gaming laptop to play LOL and indie steam games will love it.Mr. Fox likes this. -

And, OMG, like just check out these, ya know, like "enthusiast grade" system specs. It even has like this totally rad BGA Quad CPU, ya know, and like IPS, and like, ya know, like a GPU. And, like it is so thin and light, and, ya know, efficient, and it runs for like 1 day, 18 hours on a full battery charge! Yowzah!!! Somebody please pinch me and wake me up from this wonderful dream... I need to be sure that I have not, like, died and gone to Heaven.

I believe Dell going private had effected the Alienware beyond repair, they don't give a jack about the consumers now all they need is $$$$.
Any one who knows a bit about desktops will make a jump to Clevo....I feel pity for the ones who are spending even a dime on the stupid Crapware, the greatest horrific abomination of the once great brand....TBoneSan, Papusan, nightingale and 2 others like this. -
Recommend none of Aw laptop owners to play with "classic" 3Dmark11 and Wprime1024 stress tests with the new crippled Aw laptop models. They being just so disappointed and starts very many new threads in the forum for help with their hardware throttle problems. Soon become this forum completely full of threads about the same hardware problem. I've never seen so many problems with a newly launched gaming laptop. Never... Dell engineers must be complete blind if they do not see and hear about all the problems they have created.

I do t see why the new models will sell well. Why pay AW's prices for essentially the same machine you can get from HP spectere or msi or even sagers lowend stuff and pay a lot more for the AW over its same competitors. I can go buy a soldered all in one disposable laptop from anyone and pay a lot less..

I am going to roll with my 17 for a while, maybe upgrade the 780m in the next 2-3 years to whatever I can (though the 780m still does everything I need just fine). I do not think we will ever see a non-BGA laptop from Alienware again though. Will people buy a BGA 18? I wonder if the Alienware line will even be around in five years especially if more competitors enter the market.

But......but.......The new machines are really good! The Internetz says so!

Honestly the 17r2 is a great machine, barring the obvious flaws that have been communicated on these forums. At the end of the day pair that with a Titan X in the graphics amp and it's smooth sailing.

for me the GA defeats the point of it being a portable system.

The major dealbreakers are the BGA, the not easy removable battery (Is it a Mac ?), no ODD in that size profile, only 2 RAM slots, Carbon fiber outside- crap inside (not so easy user manageable like the old machines had a nice hatch for full access), Broken EC fan profiles and crippled ultra low CFM fans (as-usual like the 2013 pre BGA but atleast the older AW17 can be modded with M17x R3 CPU fan [6.5CFM] / M14xR2 CPU fan [~10CFM ] & M17xR4 GPU fan [~4-6CFM] ) & are the new AW's also infected with NVRAM ??
GA is great but with all that downgrading, they overshadow the advantage....
Hell no with AW in the future, they are dead as you can see downgrading & how the CFM ratings are dropped from the legacy M1xx generations (2013 ones had under 3 CFM fans, older ones had more than 6-10CFM fans).... I'm good with the Ranger or Clevo P7xxx/ SM-A...Last edited: Jun 18, 2015 -

Got very bored and decided to 'have a play' with something Papusan posted.....
P.S. I'm an 'Elitist' too LOLOL -
It should come as no surprise to any high-performance computer enthusiast that the BGA garbage has been embraced by select audience. It's no different than some people getting all excited about a new smartphone... cheap thrills, use it until the new wears off and toss it when you are done with it. Just don't whine and act hysterical about electronics waste in landfills, don't criticize a farmer when your mouth is full, and don't expect assistance with resolving thermal management and throttling problems... one can't have it both ways.
Computers are not the only thing dumbing down. I don't know if it is lack of intelligence, failure of the public education system or what, but the shrinking vocabulary and the growing misuse of common words and phrases is really sad. All you have to do now to be "cool" is insert the "F" or "S" words randomly and you're instantly transformed into a brilliant and bad-ass individual... a true legend in your own mind, in spite of your limited vocabulary.
Below are two examples of commonly misused words, abused by the media and folks with a chip on their shoulder. The third bullet point is added for clarity that "you" doesn't mean a specific person unless the shoe fits.
- e·lit·ist (əˈlēdəst,āˈlēdəst) - an individual that doesn't be quiet and drink the Kool-Aid; one that believes in receiving value for their money instead of a disposable piece of trash; anyone that possesses knowledge, values or beliefs that allow them to accurately discern the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, or quality versus garbage; "you" if you hate crippled BGA notebooks; syn. racist
- rac·ist (rāsəst) - anyone that dares to have an opinion "you" disagree with, and expresses it; anyone "you" don't like; any individual that has accumulated, earned or received monies, commodities or properties of great value and takes steps to block the government from stealing it; all conservatives if the accuser happens to hold a militant liberal view; syn. bigot, intolerant, mean-spirited
- you (yo͞o,yə) - used to refer to the person or people that the speaker is addressing; used to refer to any person in general; the person or group falsely accused of being an elitist, racist or a bigot because they hold a different view and are not afraid to express it in your presence; syn. me, as in one's self, if the shoe fits and/or this post is viewed as offensive rather than humorous

It's our flagship that brings the best of everything: The processor throttle / low wattage is an advantage / no need for more than 0.8ghz as this modern Hq processor has whole 4 cores - zero raid support / no need for in a laptop - two memory slots / don't need 4 memory chips, as it takes too much wattage - weak 180w psu / you don't need a more powerful psu (being too bulky) - crippled hybrid bios that provides additional power from the battery " when you need it"... In short, a flagship laptop from Dell that brings the best of everything... Finally a laptop from us that can compete with a CrApple laptop.Last edited: Jun 20, 2015 -

A very nice fix of the trottling that @unclewebb can offer all owners of the new Aw models if they ask for help in the Trottlestop guide. And a FAQ guide for the heavy throttle problems that plague the AW15 and 17R2 is going to be very very short but very effective... This must be the most effective cure for the heavy throttle problem except not to purchase this garbage... This guide can also surely be used for those new updated Aw models that come in autumn or spring 2015/16...Last edited: Jun 21, 2015 -

The AW core people must be watching all these here and "IF" they are really core members since Alienware was born (mr azor) and after the popularity the brand gained by selling upgradable MXM Socketable true gaming machines they should be really ashamed for the discrepancy put out here on the NBR's AW customers against their new idea / lineups, the 180 turn from Enthusiast to Throttling messy pile of worthless Jokebooks BS crap.

I'm glad I looked before I bought a new M17. I love my R4, it's been the best laptop I've had, but this new stuff... How could I buy one when the new Sager/Clevo is completely upgradeable with a desktop CPU?!

the problem is that I can actually see Dell caving in and actually providing a 240 for the 17 the next go round due that complaint having some momentum right now. Which isn't a problem by itself, the problem is that I think that's the only thing they will address. So everyone on other models with issues will be screwed and those of us with the 18 and it's multiple issues will never have a resolution to even one of the many problems.
It's absolutely pathetic and they should all be embarrassed. They look like a bunch of misguided amateurs. The folks working should be ashamed and I know that if it was me, just based on principle alone, I could not continue to work for a company that not only screws their customers, but disgraces their reputation to the level this company has done.Papusan likes this. -
providing a 240w when the bios is crippled is kinda stupid.
