How's Far Cry 3 on the 780m? Can you get 50-60 pfs without sacrificing too much?

Yep. Don't have the game yet, so I thought I'd ask if any of you played it. From what I remember, it should manage around 30-40 fps on Ultra. Probably not too much of a downgrade in settings to get it to 50-60.

Have you already looked through this thread to see if there is a video or two? I think there might be. 780M SLI handles Far Cry 3 marvelously, but I haven't ever played with SLI disabled and don't know how it does with a single 780M.

Here's another BF4 video, using the same settings, but this it shows a case as to when it will drop into the 50s. This seems to be the only instance I have found so far that it'll drop into the 50s. Some segments in the USS titan level where the ship breaks in half and then falls back down haven't shown any major drops like in the video so i think these settings are all good :D.

funny thing about crysis 2: if you run it in DX9 it can be played at 1080p on extreme settings without breaking a sweat, but if you run it in DX11 you need to dumb it down to high at 900p in order keep the 60fps.

crysis 3 is all over the place with its framerate: it can go between 40-60fps.

    Splinter Cell: Blacklist

    Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
As the game runs on the same Dunia engine as Far Cry 3, the settings should be very, if not exactly, similar

EDIT: all my vids are recorded using NVIDIA shadowplay that was introduced in the 337.50 beta driver.

These are not videos, but screens shots of a few games running high graphics settings and a "custom resolution" (NVIDIA Control Panel) of 2560x1440 @ 70Hz using my M18xR2 native display panel.

I gave this a try recently Brother Fox with a handful of games and was surprised that 2560x1440 was made light work of and wasn't asking too much. Wish I had a higher res monitor now.

Thanks for taking the time! I'm impressed with your rock-solid 60 fps :)

EDIT: Wait, I'm just noticing now that I don't have the option for adaptive v-sync. How does that work? I'm on the R337 latest driver.

adaptive vsync is in the nvidia control panel - it isn't in the game of course :p

EDIT: FC3 is running on stock GPU speeds, not overclocked so the settings should be reasonable :D

LOL - no I mean, I don't have it in the Control Panel on my AW17, and from a quick search it appears I'm not the only one (the 780m is not even in the supported-gpus list)

Are you sure you are looking in the correct place for it? You also have to choose the Advanced 3D options (not "Let the 3D application decide" option) for it to be utilized. I have 780M SLI and it is supported for me.

Yes, I have it set to advanced 3D options and v-sync only has on, off and 'let application decide'. I found someone saying it's because of Optimus (and your 780 SLI doesn't have it), but I have no confirmation of that.

That could be the problem, but I don't own anything that would let me test it to find out. What system do you have, bro? If you have a M17xR3/R4 with an unlocked BIOS I think you can change to PEG mode to completely disable Optimus. Does thegh0sts have a 120Hz display, or has he configured his new AW17 BIOS differently so that it shows up for his system?

That was my reasoning. You with the SLI and him, maybe, with the 120hz screen. Both without Optimus.

I have an Alienware 17 with 780m, latest drivers.

I'm wondering maybe we're OT and should move these last few posts in the Official AW17 thread.

So that must be it, then. Question becomes, what does the adaptive v-sync brings to the table (talking tangible advantages, I know what it does in theory)?

Interesting to see all the clock changes, I guess this is the 'boost' feature working as designed?

No, it's not GPU boost per se. It's just adaptive behavior that they dreamed up some time ago. GTX 680M does the same thing if left to its own devices. The vBIOS mod from SVL7 and Johnksss disables GPU boost to enhance performance and stability, but you will still see that erratic behavior unless you change the Power Management Mode to "Prefer maximum performance" (default is adaptive) in the NVIDIA Control Panel. It also helps to change everything to maximum performance in the Windows power profile.

I have mine set to max performance but all it does is change the clock range, so it never goes below 771MHz and never higher than 849MHz but sometimes clocks in between. To me that is normal even for desktops card with the same setting on.

Do you have a vBIOS mod with GPU boost disabled and it is still doing that, or you are using the stock vBIOS?

That's what drew my attention to it -3 clock states at big(ish) numbers. I see it as well on mine but only between two states, P0 and P1. Setting max preferred does not stop this happening sometimes but I may be seeing it because some sort of power throttle? It does happen during cut scenes as well so that is good behaviour. guess different cards will do this better than others.

Setting max preferred is not a good option for me (no igpu) as it locks my top clock when in windows (which is normally only 75mhz) so it runs hotter all the time and only resets after a reboot :( .

The clock changes aren't predetermined like they won't clock up at the same point in the game but these clock changes aren't really a problem since i have set everything to max power.

Also, it is possible to Adaptive V-sync on the mobile GPUs.

That is interesting to see. I saw 850mhz occasionally and that is higher then the stated max boost?

That last vid was a dx9 game so it didn't even stress the card and it quickly clocked down.

I have trouble turning off the sync. For some reason it just happens, even if both the driver and the game are set to not use it. Same game, other times, and it's off . Since it does not cause me any issues - on my card I run the settings just high enough to never get over 50fps anyway, and I know NV are still working on this feature so it will get better I hope :).

change it in the global settings or change it per game.

Even though they both run on the same engine, I don't get why Crysis 3 is more stuttery than Crysis 2.

You're certainly not under any pressure to do differently than you wish, but just to be clear this doesn't affect your warranty. User-induced damage is excluded from coverage, but modded firmware causes no damage. It merely improves system behavior and performance. User-induced damage can be inflicted with stock firmware.

You can change anything you want to and the act of doing it has no affect on the warranty per the official word of Dell/Alienware reps in our Community. Even in the event you do something to cause damage, your warranty is still in effect for everything except for cost of fixing the user-induced damage.

Just finished this today... I know that a lot of online multi-player fans like to hate on this game because there have been some issues with online multi-player mode, but I think the single-player campaign is absolutely fantastic... It definitely looks and plays excellent on an Alienware SLI laptop beast.

the fps drops in that game make me wanna cry!

    but i digress...

i see that the indie game Daylight is now on steam for pre-order with a really close release date.

Save 33% on Daylight on Steam

I'd love to see how this runs on a single 780M.

Managed to put some hours into the Wildstar beta.

Ran quite smooth, sometimes it would hiccup a little and some frames would drop. But overall not bad. Ran everything on highest possible.

If you are into MMO's and dont mind paying. I would recommend to try at least the upcoming open beta.

Just picked up this game on Steam. I recorded my first launch on it so we could have a look at it together. I flinched a couple of times, but there is not a lot of action involved with this one... not sure yet if I like it or not. I think I might get bored with it real fast. This felt like a long 25 minutes of gameplay while I was doing it. It is also poorly optimized, but I'll give it a pass on that since it is a new release. GPU utilization is really low, but it plays fine.

    Are you speaking of Daylight?

I was expecting it to be different than it is. The trailers made it look fairly exciting, but it is way too slow for my liking. I did get spooked a couple of times, but other than that I got bored with it and stopped playing it. Too many puzzles and not enough action. Before I quit playing it, I did a quick SweetFX mod and got the FOV up where it should be. That made things look better. It's too narrow running the game untweaked.

If they had a lot more witches, ghosts or zombies or whatever, along with some firearms, it could be really fun. I like the environment and it looks pretty decent. But, chasing away witches with flares, reading notes and looking for clues with glow sticks got old very fast for me. I didn't even finish the first level... I thought to myself, if this is what I have to look forward to, why bother?

it wasn't as creepy as i hoped...probably cos i chucked the difficulty down to easy :p

i guess procedural level generation is a double edged sword.

Oh my... this looks totally awesome. As far as I can tell it won't be only online multi-player like Titanfall, which would be a huge plus in my book.

Does look good but not for me. Online only is just a cop out to increase profit as they don't need to program in a single player mission. I'm so rubbish at on-line getting fragged every couple of minutes gets very boring :(

It looks pretty awesome - I hope also that it is NOT just on-line multiplayer as I'm pretty useless as well, Micky LOL

Oh yeah, spend all my time running and hiding, taking someone on is a sure fire loose for me, haha.

OT: How does a GPU upgrade work on an AW 14? I thought the GPU was soldered to the MB?
