Sure does. For the first time I could read your stats as well. Crisp!

How's Far Cry 3 on the 780m? Can you get 50-60 pfs without sacrificing too much?
-
-
Yep. Don't have the game yet, so I thought I'd ask if any of you played it. From what I remember, it should manage around 30-40 fps on Ultra. Probably not too much of a downgrade in settings to get it to 50-60.

i have FC3 installed so will have a quick look.
EDIT: Here are my settings, note that i have nvidia adaptive v-sync enabled.
will edit this post again when my video has uploaded.
EDIT 2: Here's a video (potential spoiler so be aware)

Here's another BF4 video, using the same settings, but this it shows a case as to when it will drop into the 50s. This seems to be the only instance I have found so far that it'll drop into the 50s. Some segments in the USS titan level where the ship breaks in half and then falls back down haven't shown any major drops like in the video so i think these settings are all good

funny thing about crysis 2: if you run it in DX9 it can be played at 1080p on extreme settings without breaking a sweat, but if you run it in DX11 you need to dumb it down to high at 900p in order keep the 60fps.
crysis 3 is all over the place with its framerate: it can go between 40-60fps.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
As the game runs on the same Dunia engine as Far Cry 3, the settings should be very, if not exactly, similar
EDIT: all my vids are recorded using NVIDIA shadowplay that was introduced in the 337.50 beta driver.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
These are not videos, but screens shots of a few games running high graphics settings and a "custom resolution" (NVIDIA Control Panel) of 2560x1440 @ 70Hz using my M18xR2 native display panel.

I gave this a try recently Brother Fox with a handful of games and was surprised that 2560x1440 was made light work of and wasn't asking too much. Wish I had a higher res monitor now.

EDIT: Wait, I'm just noticing now that I don't have the option for adaptive v-sync. How does that work? I'm on the R337 latest driver. -
EDIT: FC3 is running on stock GPU speeds, not overclocked so the settings should be reasonable -

Yes, I have it set to advanced 3D options and v-sync only has on, off and 'let application decide'. I found someone saying it's because of Optimus (and your 780 SLI doesn't have it), but I have no confirmation of that.
-
That could be the problem, but I don't own anything that would let me test it to find out. What system do you have, bro? If you have a M17xR3/R4 with an unlocked BIOS I think you can change to PEG mode to completely disable Optimus. Does thegh0sts have a 120Hz display, or has he configured his new AW17 BIOS differently so that it shows up for his system?
-
That was my reasoning. You with the SLI and him, maybe, with the 120hz screen. Both without Optimus.
I have an Alienware 17 with 780m, latest drivers.
I'm wondering maybe we're OT and should move these last few posts in the Official AW17 thread.Mr. Fox likes this. -
I've switched off the Intel GPU in favor for the 780M. I am using the 60hz screen.

By switching off I mean I switched using the function keys.

So that must be it, then. Question becomes, what does the adaptive v-sync brings to the table (talking tangible advantages, I know what it does in theory)?
-
Adaptive VSync | GeForce -
Yeah, I read all about that. Nevermind, maybe I'll try the Optimus trick and see if I can test it for myself.

Another BF4 vid showing off another major set piece and it performing very smoothly.

I have mine set to max performance but all it does is change the clock range, so it never goes below 771MHz and never higher than 849MHz but sometimes clocks in between. To me that is normal even for desktops card with the same setting on.

Do you have a vBIOS mod with GPU boost disabled and it is still doing that, or you are using the stock vBIOS?
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Setting max preferred is not a good option for me (no igpu) as it locks my top clock when in windows (which is normally only 75mhz) so it runs hotter all the time and only resets after a reboot.

That looks good, I'd be happy with that too. Also agree that its interesting to see all the clock changes. Game fun?? Thought about trying it myself.
-
Also, it is possible to Adaptive V-sync on the mobile GPUs.
And another vid: this time my crappy play through of Injustice: Gods Among Us - Ultimate Edition

That last vid was a dx9 game so it didn't even stress the card and it quickly clocked down.
I have trouble turning off the sync. For some reason it just happens, even if both the driver and the game are set to not use it. Same game, other times, and it's off. Since it does not cause me any issues - on my card I run the settings just high enough to never get over 50fps anyway, and I know NV are still working on this feature so it will get better I hope
.

change it in the global settings or change it per game.
Even though they both run on the same engine, I don't get why Crysis 3 is more stuttery than Crysis 2.
Crysis 2
Crysis 3

You can change anything you want to and the act of doing it has no affect on the warranty per the official word of Dell/Alienware reps in our Community. Even in the event you do something to cause damage, your warranty is still in effect for everything except for cost of fixing the user-induced damage. -
Will see how I go in a few months once I get some work and monies in my account. Though I am tempted to get some tatts with the first few paychecks (instead of like 1TB SSDs for my games)

Just finished this today... I know that a lot of online multi-player fans like to hate on this game because there have been some issues with online multi-player mode, but I think the single-player campaign is absolutely fantastic... It definitely looks and plays excellent on an Alienware SLI laptop beast.

the fps drops in that game make me wanna cry!
but i digress...
i see that the indie game Daylight is now on steam for pre-order with a really close release date.
Save 33% on Daylight on Steam
I'd love to see how this runs on a single 780M.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Managed to put some hours into the Wildstar beta.
Ran quite smooth, sometimes it would hiccup a little and some frames would drop. But overall not bad. Ran everything on highest possible.
If you are into MMO's and dont mind paying. I would recommend to try at least the upcoming open beta.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
Just picked up this game on Steam. I recorded my first launch on it so we could have a look at it together. I flinched a couple of times, but there is not a lot of action involved with this one... not sure yet if I like it or not. I think I might get bored with it real fast. This felt like a long 25 minutes of gameplay while I was doing it. It is also poorly optimized, but I'll give it a pass on that since it is a new release. GPU utilization is really low, but it plays fine.

I have only made it through one level and since all the levels are procedurally generated game guides are useless.

Are you speaking of Daylight?
I was expecting it to be different than it is. The trailers made it look fairly exciting, but it is way too slow for my liking. I did get spooked a couple of times, but other than that I got bored with it and stopped playing it. Too many puzzles and not enough action. Before I quit playing it, I did a quick SweetFX mod and got the FOV up where it should be. That made things look better. It's too narrow running the game untweaked. -
-
If they had a lot more witches, ghosts or zombies or whatever, along with some firearms, it could be really fun. I like the environment and it looks pretty decent. But, chasing away witches with flares, reading notes and looking for clues with glow sticks got old very fast for me. I didn't even finish the first level... I thought to myself, if this is what I have to look forward to, why bother?

it wasn't as creepy as i hoped...probably cos i chucked the difficulty down to easy
i guess procedural level generation is a double edged sword. -
Oh my... this looks totally awesome. As far as I can tell it won't be only online multi-player like Titanfall, which would be a huge plus in my book.

OT: How does a GPU upgrade work on an AW 14? I thought the GPU was soldered to the MB?
