also bud i cannot remember who said it but someone in this thread says they got m17 with 4850s being deliverd soon and they can help......

could he not have access to myhive already and find specific drivers that are being used for his laptop that have the 4850s in them.

their might be a driver or bios update just for that....... thats if what your doing dosent work..^^^^

It's on phase 2 processing atm, so likely to be a week or two; but I will help however I can.

I haven't been supplied any Myhive details yet, I always presumed they came with the laptop, but will take a look in a minute.

Right I've managed to get the Alienware Drivers; I've also pulled the package apart to take a look, the listed Hardware ID is:

    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870" = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9509&SUBSYS_207A161F
    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 " = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9508&SUBSYS_207A161F
    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 " = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9508&SUBSYS_207A161F
    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&SUBSYS_207A161F

It might be possible to combine these new IDs with the ones provided in the 9.7 drivers (as they supported other mobility cards) to allow installation :).

    Hope that helps :)

Did you try the guide i posted?

I dont trust the 9.7, they denied me being able to use OEM drivers, ive had good 9.4 experiences and the 8.56 i am presently using, these are great.

I have had no drivers that just "install" normally lol.

Just oem do the trick :D

Nope, unfortunately not. Im not entirely sure how to register for it either; it asks for an account number for validation under registration; so Im presuming I get some sort of account number later on.

Your account # comes on a card in your owner's manual when you get your rig.

Aye thats where I got them from, although hunting round the site.
I've also just noticed Alienware have dropped the price of what I ordered by £200 (*nasty words*) and as they've only just had the finance Im trying to get them to alter my original order to include the blu-ray drive as well; Im well inside legal grounds to cancel under DSR; but I'd rather not have to go through the hassle of cancelling finance and re-applying et al.

yeah its something that happens to many of us!! I lost about £500 or so off mine in a few months.
I suspect its very common and something we all have to get used to in the world of high-end PCs.
Doesnt stop you from being miffed though.

If it was 2-3 months later I'd be fine; but £200 dropped before I've even recieved the laptop (or it's even been built); and Im still in Phase 2 Finance/Billing on order status; well thats a little more than Im willing to grit my teeth against; I'd rather try and get them to upgrade the order to Blu-Ray as that covers most of the deficit, they still get a little extra profit; and I don't lose out anywhere near as much. If worst comes to worst, I'd rather cancel my order and re-arrange it; because thats silly money to just forget and leave; it'd pay for my Processor upgrade more or less.

Well with win 7 installed I have them both in device manager now. Albeit one has a yellow triangle but if i remember thats common until the driver is installed. The Hardware ID is different to what the previous post states. Its actually PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&SUBSYS_207A161F&REV_00. Could try the aw driver now i guess that i have the cards recognized.

Sounds good Marshall, install the AW Oem and let us know what happens, and whats in device manager after catalyst tells you to restart.

Is that hardware ID for both the GPU's?

Hmmm if that's the ID code, copy it down. It might be a case of you have to add it into the normal driver's .inf file.

I figured this might be the case; Alienware may well not have put quite the right code in the drivers; or these use a slightly different to standard ID.

dont like interrupting such an important thread so I will only be a moment

Alex@ Ive been trying to dig out an E-mail that I sent Alienware just before I received my M17.
I was not sure of the exact facts earlier but basically what happened to me was almost identical to you in that the price of my M17 had dropped(about £100-£150) from me ordering it to actually getting it.
I tried to blagg something extra to compensate...I cant remember if it was an extra HD or something but the E-mail I received back from Alienware was something along the lines of "its to be expected and its just the way it is and there is nothing I can do about it"
It was a bigger mistake on my part because when I configured my M17 I saved the config for about a month before purchase and went straight to check-out with this old config with the old prices...big mistake!

Good luck and I hope you do manage to get that Blu-ray extra but Im just remembering my experience.

If they try that then I have a pretty strong case for cancelling my order, it was made thursday morning about 2am; given they've only been given any sort of go ahead yesteday; they'd be pushing it to try and pull that one, and Im well within my rights to cancel under both DSR and Financial DMR. My parts haven't even been selected yet, as its still in the finance departments hands.

I know that Dell has a 30 day pricing guarantee and if it goes down within 30 days of purchase, they'll refund the difference.

However, if they'll hold true to that with the Alienware, I don't know. You'll just have to call them and see. If not, just cancel and replace the order.

BTW, don't cancel and replace the order on the same call. Don't let the rep know you're going to replace an order. They'll tell you they can't do it, just so they can cancel your order and then replace it so that they'll get the credit for the sale on the new one.

I'm reading this forum since 3-4 months. It's perfect, thanks. I'm going to buy my dream after 2-3 days, and I have few questions.
It's going to be Alienware M17 with the new 4850x2, but I'm not sure is that going to late my order, because I'm from Europe, and now I'm in USA only for the summer, till the end of August. So I have 30 days to receive that monster. I'm little bit worried about the lot of issues that I read in several threads.
If something happen, my warranty will not be valid in Europe, right?
And I'll not have days to return the item, if it's not quality and working.
So I'm wondering about all of that. You are fans and professionals here, may I hear you advices.
There is not chat support at the Alienware website anymore, so what do you think, is it possible for them to make me coupon with worldwide warranty, or without warranty at all for less money. And the important thing is about the videocard, are they working, is there any benchmarks yet, is it worthy.

I'm not going to M17x, because it's more expensive and I like very much the scull design, that's my dream since 8 years and more.
So now they have also a price drop for $200, which is great.
And if I'm not US citizen, may I use some student discounts or can you offer me some coupons and somethings about tax reduce, and shipping.

Thanks a lot, apologize for my English, I'm Bulgarian. Sorry for the may words. :D

If I was you flymouse I would copy your post and paste it in a new thread all by itself.
This topic is related to a seperate issue and nobody here as yet received the new 4850s in an M17 from Alienware...we are cheating a bit here in this topic.

Start a new topic and I will post a reply for sure!

Alex@ perhaps or circumstances are quite different because I used a credit card to buy mine so the price changed only after the card had been debited.

    good luck

Hmm with these drivers, the ones i am uploading now, i find the installer only works on one condition, a fresh install, any chance of you having a fresh vista 64bit install? Uploading now, taking half an hour.

Just make sure your win7 has not touched other ATI drivers at all.

Great, the upload is complete soon, and hopefully the device ID detects your GPU,

Are they both still in your device manager? They should be VGA adapters or should have the pre release drivers on from Microsoft.

We need to indentify if one is a parent card and one is daughter, then prehaps we can remove one.

They are both in device manager as ATI Mobility Radeon 4850. Installed with a driver called (Microsoft WDDM 1.1). Some generic driver I think which windows installed.

Ok thats good, WDDMs can be used to default drivers if you ever mess up, its pretty good, although we may have to manually install the inf, which should work either way.

If the install doesnt work, uninstall all drivers so they pick up standard VGA i guess, but dont let it update, cancel the pre release drivers before they do (i think there is a spanner when the pop up box appears that cancels it)

Ok, go to device manager, right click one of the cards, properties, update driver, browse my computer manually, let me pick from a list blah blah, have disk.

    Navigate to this folder
    Graphics\ATI Graphics\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF

    and select

    CH_72695

Then it should bring up the 4850 and install drivers.

    Lemme know how it goes.

So what's wrong with the drivers Alienware provides? Are they not installing? You really should start out with them before you try anything else.

Im using Win 7 build 7100. Any driver from 9.5 on would be greatly appreciated. Clearly the newer the better. Having issues with PM's at present so my email address is [email protected]
