Yeah I gave that one ago moo but with the same outcome. I was just looking again at the device ID and noticed it actually has 4 of them.

    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&SUBSYS_207A161F&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&SUBSYS_207A161F
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&CC_0300

Dont know if its relevant or not.

Problem is that the aw ones always give me an error when I try installing them. Always says install manager failed to initialize DCM!!! And failed to initialize package manager then the installation ends.

To be fair that looks like the only option I think. So frustrating though. Annoying as well as im sure its only a case of a simple mod for a driver but clearly need someone with good knowledge of driver modding to take a look. Moo is looking at it I think at present so will see what he comes up with.

Haha Moo doesn't mod drivers... he is getting Vicious or Zfactor to look at them... your best bet is to talk to them... also supposedly the 4850's weren't even supposed to go out yet, and the ones that did were by accident... becuase they weren't finished or something? anyway I'm sure the issue will be resolved soon, either drivers will come or they will get you new cards

Marshall you're getting DCM errors with those AW drivers yeah?
Exactly the same error when i tried to run the programme; its a flaw with the self extracting process used (DOH!)

Get winrar, open the alienware setup programme with Winrar, this will allow you to copy the contents of the self extracting exe OUT of it; this is how I got into the inf files :)
Copy everything inside it into a folder, then run the setup from the extracted files. This will solve the DCM errors; basically the AW auto-unzipper deletes the temp files too quickly; you're getting errors because files are missing.

    So
    1) Download Winrar and install it (associate it with all except .zip)
    2) Right click the AW driver pack and click Open with Winrar
    3) Select everything in there with a held left mouse button, THEN drag these contents to a new folder (should be 5 sub folders, and multiple files into the root folder)
    4) Run setup.exe from the new, unzipped folder (once unzipped, you wont get DCM errors).
    5) Cross your fingers; as you should now be able to use Alienware drivers :D

    Good luck :)

If you're having any issues from there, let me know.

Just incase you have any problems with opening and extracting via Winrar, I'm going to re-upload a zipped version of the files to Rapidshare, which should be easier for you to extract; however it's going to take an hour or so to upload; so I'd suggest trying yourself first! haha

    Link: http://rapidshare.com/files/260227692/Alienware_Drivers.zip.html

Annoyingly for me a week ago I was on a business class ADSL line, so would have uploaded about twice as fast...DOH!

Hopefully Mobility Modder will have a version for the 4000 series soon. There is a very big demand at the moment for a Mobility Modder that's compatible with the 4000 series ao it's safe to say that they will be developing one.

Success at last. Alex I did what you said and used winrar to extract the driver and it installed flawlessly. Definately plus rep for you buddy. Just need to wait now for Mob Modder to support 4000 series cards and that will be the icing on the cake. Will run a couple of benchmarks but dont expect alot as obviously using old drivers. 8.57 I think.

Im really really happy that worked for you mate, glad I could help :)
I'll finish uploading these drivers (80% done) now though, that way anyone else who needs them can use the zipped rather than the semi-broken Alienware installer!
The 8.57s are old drivers, and yeah, mobility modder will be great.

OH, might be worth going into CCC and setting Catalyst AI to advanced. I think that worked better for Crossfire on earlier drivers as it forced games without true profile support to attempt AFR, rather than single GPU usage. Try it with an without and see if it makes a difference ;)

Also (sorry to keep talking) if you have 3dmark Vantage, could you run that and tell us what your *GPU* score is under performance preset (once the test is complete; it should show Total, GPU and CPU scores), Im really interested to see how these things fair up against my desktop card :D

Again glad to hear you're up and working mate, sorry, if I'd realised that's what the issue you were having was I would have fed back the information about extracting last night.

Oh, sorry to jump in one more time :D
Now you've managed to get A driver set installed; might be worth taking a shot to see if those 9.7 drivers will install.
If you check for W7 64 bit drivers for Mobility 4 series they come up (on the amd direct site, unfortunately the game.amd.com site doesn't have a 'card finder'), so might install now...maybe not but worth a shot!

Well there is actualy still a slight problem. Both cards are installed as are the drivers and the CCC. But the second card has a yellow triangle. This is a known issue with ati drivers for win 7 and was addressed in 9.5 and later. So any benchies will be on one card only. And for those who dont know AW would release a laptop with no driver support a I bought an M9750 back in the day and when it was relesed there was no SLI support for it. Had to wait a few months for support.

Still interesting to see the benches, to see how the 1GB version compares to the 512MB brother :)

Is it possible to force install the driver for the second card?

Also, I've uploaded those pre-extracted drivers, so I'm updating the link on the last page now.
Am going to get it reuploaded to a collectors account with rapidshare too, because apparently only 10 people can download it without it being uploaded to collectors :)

Oh, sorry, another quick question - what do GPU-Z or CCC count as your native clocks? Just wondering if the 1GB version still uses 500/800 clocks, or whether they've altered them at all? (Faster would be nice, but slower wouldn't be a surprise either!)

Now all you gotta do is get the second 4850 working. :p

However considering the 4000 series is meant to be twice as powerful as the 3000 series...you're looking at better performance with your 4850 than the dual 3870s.
