For sure, my approach is always being "dumb" about these things tho. I've mentioned to them is that I don't want to seem greedy just fair. As I clearly mentioned before I was offering to pay for some changes. We will see what happens, I'm just happy and lucky things are actually taking place and changing. I could have went the route of purposely wrecking my unit and getting a complete care replacement, but I'm not like that and was content with my R1, but unfortunate events took place to lead me to where I am now.

As always, DaneGRClose thanks for your insight.

Hamilcar I hear you and agree the statement was in general not realy you. Geby the first sys was ok agree the second was nice set up, I agree with Dane I realy dont see them changing to the third and would worry that they would think I was trying to get everything I could not just what i had or little better. 5870's I dont see happening but then I'am not you. Good luck you can only try.

Yesssss! Got my screen and it is flawless. Thank you Alienware. But since the tech changed the screen, my wireless will not connect. Now, before I blame it on him, just before he got here I installed new chipset drivers. Soooooo...gonna do some research and figure it out I hope. Happy camper right now. :)

If that dosn't correct the problem pull ur palm rest and make sure the wires for the ant: are still plugged in and the card is seated easy to have moved them..happy for your new screen.

same thng happened to me my system was 4 gb memory ,t9800 320 hdd and 280 in sli with 1920 1200 screen . First system was given was 6gb memory , 500 gm hard drive with i-720 processor and 4870 in xt , with 1440 900 screen .Well I complained that my screen old screen was 1920 .I said could they upgrade the 4870 to 5870 in xt .Said I would trade my extra hard drive and memory . I get my new system and get my 1920 screen and get my processor upgraded to the i7 820 a 300$ upgrade I get my memory cut to 4 gb and hard drive cut to 320 but do not get my gpu upgraded spend a week trying to get to the person in charge of replacement . Offer to pay extra for upgrade. Finally heard back from him and was a no go .Was told in no uncertain terms processor was upgraded and it was video card was upgrade and it was so no more upgrades at that point I gave up.To this day do not understand why they upgraded a more expensive part but thats how they do it . Good luck

Just got my R2 replacement system after owning a 10 month old defective R1, they sent me a BRAND NEW SYSTEM today when the resolution expert told me to expect an refurbished system? I think once I told him that my B-Day was comming up (July 1st) he put in a request to ship a new system for an exchange! Unfortunately the only real upgrades I recieved were 640GB HDD in raid 0, and Intel Ult. wifi 6300 but I am not complaining. Me and my R1 went through hell and back for 10 months straight dealing with stuttering, lock ups, bsod's, and throttling and all I really wanted was a fully functional PC for the $4,000 I paid for. I have to say that Dell/Alienware really turned my thoughts around and now I can truly say that I am a proud owner of an "ALL POWERFUL M17X"!!

Um yeah dude I'm jealous. The reason you didn't get any upgrades is because there pretty much wasn't any that were possible. Extreme cpu, dual gpu's at top of the chain, 1333 ram, bluray, 1200p what did you expect an upgrade on lol? And wether you want to admit to it or not, you did get an upgrade that new machine would stomp the old one! Conrats and welcome to the club!

WOW  nice job! Dane is right only upgrades left were couple gigs of ram and a Bl-ray burner. :D and yes it is a upgrade, just bare with the GPU's the driver support is not good right now. Leave them stock I see some people having bad luck with the ATI drivers some good but would not want to see you with problems again. :D

DaneGRClose, sorry to make you jealous lol!! Honestly the only upgrade that I really was looking forward to was a RAM upgrade to 6 or 8, (I guess I was asking for too much) however they did upgrade my HD and wifi so I can't complain. I am extremely happy that I recieved a brand new R2 especially when I was told initially that the replacement would be refurbished. This machine squashes my old one by far, I just miss Cuda and PhysX :( Thanks for pointing that out Dane and for welcoming me to the club.

Hamilcar, thanks for the comment. I had to push for the 5870's and 920XM because the res expert didn't respect the price and performance differential from my R1 and how the replacement should be of equal or better value. He actually tried to stick me with a 720QM and 4870's but I was like no bro, you got me messed up for someone else go back and do your research lol. I feel that these systems cost a pretty penny and should work like the price suggests and if not offer a substantial replacement with upgrades for our troubles, is that too much to ask for? Again thanks for the comment!

note: 280's in SLI are equivalent to 5870's CFX IMO because of the many benefits that Nvidia GPU's offer such as Cuda, and PhysX compensating for the raw performance that the 5870's offer and also because 4870's were offered with the R1 in the beginning? just my 2 cents.

Alienwolf, both you and Dane are right respectively I realized that I was asking for too much. My anger and frustration were tryig to get the best of me and I am now glad that I didn't pursue further risking receiving a lemon or worse. I have to clarify that I am extremely happy with the outcome of my replacement issues and that it has truly paid off. Thanks for the tip, I will stick with stock drivers for now after reading the many posts about users experiencing the poor drivers AMD/ATI/Alienware/Dell has been dishing out lately, which is ridiculous to say the least. Thanks for the tip and comments I am indeed a proud owner once again!

As I have stated before, they sure hooked me up and with the quickness. They're prolly seeing the trend here that the R1 is suffering badly and still don't want to lose too much money on it by replacing them all with R2's. So they keep trying to get the R1 right for those of us that have one-sending refurbs and Frankensteins-but I don't care, as long as it works right. And right now, mine is golden!!!!!!!!

Well my long strange journey is almost over. Had to try one last time to get the 5870 in Crossfire. Spent all week trying to speak with person in charge was never able to get him. Got a call from a different rep telling me no go on upgrade. Spoke with supervisor today advised him of my stituation he was kind and tried to get upgrade but no go. Informed me my system has already shiped . Exchange process started on 06 26 10 got tracking number and I should have my system on 07 12 10. From what I see on here this is a really fast turn around. Very happy started with 4gb mem ,t9800 processor 320 hdd
and 1920 1200 screen and 280sli ended up getting 4gb ,320 hdd 1920 1200 screen , I-7 820,4870 in crossfire. Since my first system a xps 1730 with 2 gb mem 7500 processor and 8700 in sli cost me 2500 before upgraded the warenty for I think 200 or so and this system specs out to 2,850 and is brand new think I hit a stand up double maybe a tripple. 5870 in crossfire would have be a homerun :D So thanks for all the help from everyone .You guys are the best. Especially Dane. You have been really fast to get back to me with great info .Was nice to here someone say I did good on my exhange.
.Funny thing when you said you were jealous of my system I looked at your specs and thought you were just being nice then I checked web site and they speced out about he same money wise . Dane was wondering about how much your original system cost? I will keep checking site
and try to help out people going through the same thing .Monday will be fun :D

Hamilcar- I'm glad you're at the end of your journey here, hope you don't run into any more problems! I'm glad I was able to help, I really have enjoyed being able to help the people that I have. You really did good on your exchange, especially since you ended up with same or better and got an R2 on the first try. I love my system, but the only gripe I have at all is I really wish there was a feasible way for me to be able to get an RGBLED screen, but I can't and I love it none the less. Original purchase price on the R1 I had was about 2600-2700 if I remember right. Glad to hear we'll have someone else helping out others in here, I try to help everyone but I'm not superman lol!

Predator4rmMars- I really think you are going to get an amazing setup, don't worry about the xfire 5870's there is ways to make them work now, and honestly even a single 5870 is enough to run anything you need to now until they get better driver support. I really don't think you were asking to much wanting a bit extra ram, I started with 4gb of 1066 and ended up with 8gb of 1333 so it's not unrealistic. But honestly on the ram no one really needs 8gb right now, it's just a little overkill. I have a bluray burner and 6300 wifi card on their way to me now so I won't have to be quite so jealous! ;)

I have heard 2 different stories on that, one is when you order the site gives you the speed you need for the CPU you order. The other got an email from a member saying his Rep said only 1066 was being used now. Hope some one has the truth! :D

how much difference in performance does the memory speed make ?

And wondering just how important is having card be dx11 ready ?

The speed is not a lot you would not tell the difference. The DX11 ya games in the future will be using it more and more. For that reason I wish I had the 5870 cards. But Will it be earth shattering I don't prob not. Will play fine on 9 or ten. The 4870 is the second best cards, so will run a long time.
It really come's down to how important is being on the cutting edge is to you  The better you can get the more future proof you going to be. ;) Hope that helps.

Dx11 is nice to have but if you think about DX's history it's not going to be 100% necessary for quite a while. There are a lot of games still today that have DX9 compatibility for older cards that are fast enough to run them but don't have DX10/11 capability. DX11 may have some cool features but none of them are going to render a game unplayable without using DX11. As for the memory, it's not something your necessarily going to notice as Alienwolf said. It is a slight improvement though with the right cpu, running 1066 ram with a 720,820, or 920 cpu isn't going to run as fast as possible as they are 1333fsb cpu's. The ram would be a slight "bottleneck" in running a 1333fsb system. But again, it's not something necessarily noticable to most people.

Well since system is coming tommorow . Think what is coming is what I am getting. I am thinking abount sending E-mail to MichaelDell in reffernce to my quest for Video card. The one thing that had problem with was no e-mail was sent with the specs for me to sign off on . The rep in charge of replacement did blow me off for the week and I never got a chance to plead my case. By time I did speak with manager system had been shipped
I will advise that my experience when I did speak to people was possitive .Will also list the people that did help. Still think one should have a little say in system. Although if people did have some say then knowing people fraud might start with people returning system to get a system upgrade .

The Dell ram is ok and will run just fine. I you want matched high performance sticks it will cost and of course run faster.
Make sure if you buy vendor get same number of gig sticks like 2x2 or 2x4 so you get max performance. If you buy a 2 gig and a 4 gig
will work fine and you wont notice the difference , but then if you want the fastest then there you go.

Well best part of this is that everytime I get on the Phone with Dell my girlfriend starts to get mad . Last night she said I was like a crack addict :p
Any of you guys try to get President obama to Help .Who cares about oil in the gulf Healthcare and Iraq. I need my 5870 in crossfire :D

On my letter to Dell I assume just plead my case in a bussiness like manner .
Should I be a like angry should I say dell is a great company make my case for 280 being better than 4870.Should I mention getting runaround from one person for week them system being sent out with me agreeing to specs

Well to be honest kept calling Dell but never got to speak to the person making the call. He was always busy. On the last day he was in a meeting all day. Feel now was avoiding me untill the system shipped. If I had been able to have my day in court think I would be ok.

If you look at the specs on new system vs old everything is the same on new system. Except cpu was upgraded and gpu was downgraded

This system was a 40th birthday present from x-wife. Now seperated with child support. Doing ok but can not see for a while having cash to buy something like this. Plus does have some sentimental value to me. So one
more e-mail for me. Now system may come tommorrow and I may be so blown
away by it that I get lazy and dont send e-mail. .)

Alienwolf, not bad yourself! I don't even think I come equal due to your ram and ssd, but I have to say the 5870's are nice given the raw power. I am glad things worked out for those of us that have/had defective R1's and I agree that Alienware/Dell are doing what they can to resolve issues just need to be in a more timely manner. I believe that the company is still reeling in shock that the R1's chipset is extremely problematic since it used to be their flagship gaming notebook for less than a year, and that they should have tested the system out extensively before its initial release IMHO.

DaneGRClose, thanks for the comment. My new system dusts my R1 and purred right out of the box. The CFX 5870's are a bit of overkill at the moment but i am glad I have them as I won't need to upgrade anytime soon. I am actually going to stick with stock drivers for now as Alienwolf informed me that the current drivers are poor and honestly I don't feel the need to update them at the moment. After reviewing your previous comments I did have to take a step back and know that I have it good right now when others are still fighting the good fight, I have nothing to complain about thanks to you guys. 4GB @1333 is plenty for the tasks that I utilize on a daily basis and your right 6-8 are just plain overkill lol!! The upgrades that I did recieve (640GB HD, Intel 6300) are perfect for school and my everyday uses so I consider this to be great compensation for my time and inconveniences. Blu-Ray burner and intel 6300 along with your other goodies make for an awesome machine, congrats!

Very very nice I too do agree I miss my R1 some. I have always like Nivida more that ATI but the R2 runs sooooo much better anyone who hangs in there to the finish line is greatly rewarded. :D

Well I tried to call today to see if I could get some info on my system replacement and was told that they won't know anything about the system for 10 business days from the day the order was placed. I was told that doesn't mean the system isn't being built right now, just that they won't know anything till then.

Since I was never made aware of my specs and was basically told when the order was placed that I would end up with the same as what I have now I decided to send an email off the [email protected] and see if that gets me anywhere closer to an R2. This is starting to become really frustrating since this is what I use for my classes and will need this all settled by the time school starts back up.

Check the support page watch the Status of your case number. Once this goes to parts ordered. They should be able to get you the order number. For me it was much quicker than 10 days. Also if you let them it will get sent out with out you signing off on it so be alert so to speak.

Figured I would post another update. Still have not received return shipping box or instructions, Maybe tomorrow.

I turned the computer on today and it posted and made it to the "Starting Windows" screen where it froze and had to be rebooted.

Reboot brought it into windows and I was able to load a game up. The game ran for 5 mins before freezing the computer. Everything was frozen but the mouse, and it sat that way for 5 minutes before having to be rebooted again.

This reboot got to the "Starting Windows" screen and froze yet again.

All this is after the new mobo was installed.

Rebooted again and it made it to windows and allowed me to type this message.

Good build I do wonder why they cut your hard drive in half. But hard drive is not a big deal. Also nice to see they negotiated with you. With me they gave me a second build and had to play phone tag and was never able to get the guy working on my exchange.
Plus think of it this way I had 280 in SLI and they gave me 4970 in crossfire.

    Congrats

Well they didn't. When I ordered my R1 I only ordered a single 250gb HD, and bought one separately later on. Obviously I will pull it out before shipping the R1 back and putting it in the R2 once it arrives.

Well with getting what I wanted was to point out the money I spent on the original R1. I don't care if they are giving me a comparable unit performance wise. I want a comparable unit money wise, I stuck to that and it paid off. They also gave me a 15% refund on my extended warranty I paid for. Overall I'm sooper happy.
