I think the power requirements played a huge role in how the machine could handle it or rather not handle it .. The heatsinks on the M17x are pretty beefy to begin with ..

it's weird. the heatsink is on the die and it comes around and the fan is on the other side with vent on it like "woah!"
but best cooling i have seen.

you got a link to the gpus? or just take a picture of yours. isn't it the same as the 4870 heat sink?
-
The picture of the GPUs is in that link he posted.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah. but it's not easy to get to the gpu's like the whitebook and the sager.

so, had they went with a better heat sink like this one...we would now have gddr5 cards...but they didn't..so it was a disaster. (and gtx's are well known mini baby suns when they get to running..lol).(speculation of course)
now we wait and see if someone puts a 4870 in one of these machines with one of these heat sinks...and see if the temps are lower...or has this been done already..... -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
nope. we don't know about temps for the 4870. but i can pull up some temps from my runs?
i just got a bsod and then i saw it said hardware malfunction so i have to see what's up. -
meaning....putting one in a m980nu or d901f
-

the heatsinks should still work since the MXM 3.0b spec dictates the mount points right John? Is what I am hoping - not sure why Clevo never uses ATI....
-
that's what im thinking mr scook9.
the problem....
finding someone with all the components and knowledge to give it a try.... -
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I agree, needs to be a collector of very high end laptops (which few are)
I would not mind having an np9262 as well as an M17x, but the MXM 2.1 is a big turn off to me - otherwise beautiful laptop (functionally - ugly aesthetically) -

I would love to just see a D901c with MXM 3.0b slots lol, I would be a happy camper then (and a better keyboard)
-
That's a thinner system and the fan not directly on top. I know that wouldn't fit but the concept would have to be similar. -
and that one would have potential being an all copper block. better heat transfer.(speculations of course) -
I was looking to upgrade unfortunately I cannot find a 4gb kingston ram at 1333. -
scoop? who is that?
lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
but wouldn't the less heatpipe being used the better? So the Clevo D901 style coolers would be better?
about my ram, it SHOULD be, is it? Maybe? Can't hurt was my reasoning haha -
same thing i was thinking.. one big chuck of metal vs 2 thin heat pipes to a small piece of metal.
-
I am meant scook sorry... LOL
-
just messing with ya joe..

I know

man!, im all eyes on this...
off topic:
did some one over clock the d901f?? -

My question would be what differentiates the Mobility 4870 in the M17x from a slightly overclocked Mobility 4850? What justification does Alienware believe they have selling these cards labeled as 4870s? -
dont think he has cards to send at the moment....
-
i have another source
hence the watch this space -
torment? me? I'm as nice as they come.
-
same thing like the 280m *cough* 260m *cough* 9800m *cough*
ati is just getting into the same groove...apparently.(speculations of course) -
..

Hopefully we can take this argument to them and get the price lowered.
-
I'm reminded of this article from back in the day that listed a 4850 in the ES M17x.
If they knew it was really a 4850 back then why call it a 4870 now. -
that's just it...they only priced it to beat the 9800m and not the 280/260
although some other countries have their pricing in the out space limits of pricing...lol -
Well even the bios releases noted GDDR3 ATI cards then we all thought(or hoped i should say) they would be GDDR5 and yeah we were all let down but at the same time i think not surprised.. I know i wasnt..
Spilt milk and all that jazz.. -
a wording error more than likely...just like every thing else when trying to quote facts that aren't really facts.
everyone wanted to be first with the first mobile g5 cards so they all jumped the gun. with that nda stuff covering them..(speculations of course) -
Well supposedly that new 250m has GDDR5 in the Toshiba
... Not terribly exciting but GDDR5 nonetheless..
Its advertised as such all over the place and a few people own them and no one has disputed it thus far ...
So i guess Nvidia was the first out of the gate with a GDDR5 Mobile card..
Somehow i figured it would have been ATI though since they have been using GDDR5 for so long ..
Also if cost is an issue with that memory then i wonder how toshiba is selling the machine with an i7 and 1 gig of video memory all for $1349.00.. -
exactly why i asked....which version did ati try to produce... the old g5 memory was starting to have issues. and didn't they go out of business? (the memory maker of their chips) or....the new style using samsung memory chips with a higher rated speed....the jury seems to still be out on this answer..
and yes quad...seems nvidia did beat them...a whole lot of folks would have lost that bet...lol -
If they can't use GDDR5 in notebooks yet then that's fine...just don't call the cards 4870s then. In my book that's as much false advertising as sending out invoices that say GDDR5 when the cards use GDDR3.
-
Well then for that matter please dont call the 280/260s those names either because those cards are SOOOOO far away from there desktop counterparts its not even remotely funny.. Atleast ATI is using newer tech in there mobile cards so ill give them the hand up for that one.. Be it DDR3 or 5...
I think in the mobile world its all different from here on out and we just have to learn to live with it.. Like it or not.. -
i second that quad!
-
-
There are similarities to the desktop cards atleast with ATI but 0 when it comes to Nvidias .. So while yes 2 wrongs do not make a right what Nvidia is doing is just wrong to the tenth power .. -

in the words of the law abiding citizen..."they are both wrong"
GDDR5 = GDDR3 4870 CrossFireX confusion...any contact from Dell regarding this?
