Agreed, A05 supports them so they'll probably be drop-ins. They'll need a bigger power adapter though and those things will run hot no doubt.

Agreed. Maybe Thicker Heat-sinks on the cards? Not really sure.
-
guys, honestly i have 4870 xf's at the moment in my m17x and the fans are ridiculous when in games. I suppose the 5870 xf create more heat, then more noise. Follow this train of thought and it points at the 480m solo being noisy and a pair would compete with an A380 at takeoff.
I really think that the m17x is in need of some sort of revamp in the cooling deparment, maybe they will be shipped with a notebook cooler siliconed or superglued to the bottom of it lol! -
I would not believe what the salesman says.I have a beautiful bridge for sale here in the us for sale real cheap real money maker.pm for details

Hi guys, first post. I agree with the consensus here that the 480m in SLI just sounds silly; barring some unforeseeable tech solution the energy consumption and heat would be too ridiculous for even a gaming notebook. However, I am in the market for a m15x (waiting for E3, hoping for a refresh), and am wondering if the 480m by itself may outperform the 5850/5870 significantly? When I first read the card's specs I thought it would be a single card solution only, and was shocked to read here that it would support SLI... really seems dumb.
But yeah, in the m15x, would anyone venture a guess about the performance? And people that are familiar with alienware (I am not; this will be my first alienware computer), how likely is a m15x refresh at E3, and if so how likely do you think it is that we'll see the 480m in there? -
480 sli
well one company already has plans for an sli 480 machine with a desktop 6 core cpu lol -
Have not heard anything on a M15 refrsh yet, and as far as a 480M in a M15, not very likely considering the 100 watt draw
-
Bummer. Is the 5870 the best choice then for the m15x? And can I order an m15x without ANY graphics card to save money?
-
nope has to have one as far as i know.
Also if your going to be upgrading just leave the 240m in there as the same heatsink is used for all of its cards. -
Computing whilst wearing oven mitts is going to be a challenge...
-
Well, you always can make your room inside the freezer and, BTW, giving the frozen food to the poors...
-
No I want my frozen pizza thank you very much
-
In that case you can oven-cook your pizzas over the AW... or put it piece by piece inside the BR slot...
-
The addition of the Mobility 5850 is the refresh.
-
Someone said that the 480m will cost $675(?) more than the 5870m, will that put the cost over $1000 per card??
-
yea and life size brick power adapter too lol
-
That thing will probably output more heat than my Weber. I can do all my summer grilling with that machine!
-
If Dell did release such cards would they do it at the computex or at E3?
-
one of the two most likely imo
-
Come on now...you've been here long enough and should know to stop with that already.
-
I know it's E3 but heck I am hoping it will be before as E3 will be really close to the last day for my 30 days return period.
-
ik but if i were you stick with the cf 5870's better imho
-
I know but there is also the 840QM that is coming within weeks... So many changes...
-
yea but its like .13 ghz increase........
and possibly lower temps which is a none issues with replying new thermal paste -
What is USB 3 comes out...
I am playing with you because so far no matter what happens you make me want to keep my PC as is...

Is it smart enough to wait for Alienware M17x to introduce 480m?
-
no not really as with the current power supply you couldn't have sli 480m's in it so keep the crossfire 5870's
the only thing i could see being done is one the M17X is unveiled i.e. a totally different laptop but it wont be released for months and probably wont be until the beginning of 2011. -
My Dell 240watt brick on my M6400 is huge enough. I wonder what a 400 watt brick is going to look like!
-
rofl dude its going to be huge compared to that and i mean its going to need roughly twice the capacity of the one you already have.
-
@spradhan01 and everyone who ask is it possible for 480M Sli.
Yes, a 480m sli is possible. Anything is possible. Nvidia is competing with ATI, so they must do something about it. Is money burning a hole in your pocket? If not, I would wait for the 480m sli and then decide. Maybe by then the 5870xf will be cheaper? Who knows. I'm definitely waiting.
I prefer (have) ATI for desktop, and Nvidia for notebooks. -
yes it very much is but in the current system 200 watts only give 40 watts to the res of the M17X system so its not possible with the current system. Also if AW do have the 480m sli i don't think they are going to make a new power supply without a entirely new design. I.e. the current R-2 is so far is best with the CF 5870's only 120 watts total leaves another 120 watts for the rest of the system.

I thought Alienware's laptops were suppost to be "future proof." How the hell is blowing money on two 5870's in CfX being "future proof" if they're just going to refresh it again a month later? Come on, think ahead a little will you.
-
1) The very idea of "future proofing" a computer is silly
2) The existence of a new model has absolutely zero impact on the performance of your current one. -

There as future proof as any other notebook in the business. Nothing ever stays the same, and technology is advancing so fast. Even so the XF 5870's will be one of the top setups for a while.... -
exactly and the 480m seems like a lot of heat trouble and power wise is a little too much
-
hahhah future proof, man we can all dream. i'm just hoping for next year proof.
-
Think it's more a case of Dell trying to cater to both the ATI and NVIDIA fans out there.
Only reason I do not have a R2 right now is the ATI card, I prefer the NVIDIA GPU in laptops -
next week proof is more like it.lol
-
I am not sure what's more frustraiting
The Part you bought last week is now out dated
or
The part you bought last week is now 1/2 the price -
I still think the best form of "future proofing" is saving money...
-
yes it is i saved 20% off my laptop purchase and no deal on the site is able to beat my base price with my specs. my base was 1665 before tax and shipping
-
Future proof =/= always be the best. I don't see why people are upset that they can't wait a few more months for maybe a 5-10% if somehow 480m SLI is magically possibly without melting through your desk or lap. Enjoy the 5870s, if you always have to have the best video cards, go win the lottery or buy a desktop
.

lol well said Heartache

even desktops are not future proof my friend... -
lol, the term future proof is an oxymoron...
-
future proofing is maybe stupid but is it really? with certain technologies such as USB this doesn't exactly get a yearly refresh etc, things like that I mean USB 2.0 was inducted in 2001...now we are at 3.0 in 2010..
Doesn't work for all tech's but defo some
then again light peak is just around the corner
-
I've 'future prooedf' mine with the essentials at least:
RGB LED Screen
Alienware Chassis
Alienware cooling
Lots of internal space -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Look at one test with the 480m that was posted over at the Clevo forum...pretty good if it's true...
-
that seems odd in a way i don't trust this result not you babyhemi but the actually originator. also i would like to see vantage more than 06 for a comparison as they are using the 980 lol
-
They forgot to post how many full meals they cooked as well.
GTX 480m officially confirmed, coincides with E3/Alienware refresh
