Still, if you end up being able to source, modify and get an M18x working with a 18.4" RGBLED or greater grade panel, that will rock.

Sadly, I've seen it so many times with friends, family along with clients and co-workers that screen quality ranks very low on their "care" meter. It is similar to HDTVs and similar ilk when I point out just how dismal viewing angles and colors are and even when showing them what images and HDTV COULD look like, 99% of the time, I'm met with an effective shoulder shrug and indifference. These are the same users who could care less about dead pixels usually. So many times I've said, "btw, you have a dead pixel or pixels on your screen," or, 'did you notice how uneven your backlighting is and how much bleed your screen has when displaying darker hues?" and I get the, "Oh, I never even really noticed." To me, that just boggles my mind but it is what it is.
I'm sure, for the sake of pursuing the bottom line, companies like Dell and similar ilk have done their market research and this very, VERY small group of malcontents (present company included), is insignificant enough to only merit specialized offerings of better screens on specific premium systems and/or markets. I don't think the PC industry is out of touch. I actually think they are spot on.
The vast majority of us who frequent these boards do not represent the general masses who rush to Wal-Mart and similar places to purchase their consumer electronics.
With that being said, if you are offering what is the epitome of designer gaming laptops to the high end market, the least they could do is offer a high caliber screen option
On the other hand, I find myself somewhat in the camp of those general masses as while a great screen is definitely desired and an option I would pursue/purchase if available, it is not a deal breaker for me as long as it is 72%-80% gamut or higher. -
True, the market for the high-end laptop screens is so small, even big companies like Dell and HP are reluctant to offer it and only do so for the prestige rather than profit.
Still, it's worth the shot IMHO. -
Hi! is this thread ready to die? Or are we still waiting for the "promised landscreen" out of the initiative and creativity of Aikimox?
-
I'm still waiting for the English keyboard for my system and will check the screen model while doing the replacement + some upgrades. I already have a couple of RGB LED candidates but won't order until the connectors are confirmed to be the same type.
-
Thanks Aiki! I just wanted to make you know that we are waiting... Your are our Moses in this arid screendessert...
-
-
-
Thanks to Speedy we now have the screen model number: LTN184HT05-T01
As soon as we get the datasheet on the panel, the upgrade options will be finalized. -
Is it an RGB LED or is it going to be WLED with a higher color gamut?
-
Depends on the connector type. If the stock screen is 30pin, we can upgrade it to RGB LED (matte/glossy). If it's 40pin - higher gamut WLED is the best we can do at this point.
-
Come on 30 pin!
-
After seeing my friend's m18 with the WLED and his XPS with the RGB...it boggles the mind that they'd stoop that low with the m18. So what they said^
I neeeed my laptop's screen to at least come close to my desktop's -

So what are the Samsung stated specs for the panel that they are shipping?
-
I'm kind of shocked it didn't make it into the R3 -
But, please, try to understand: for somes that not just game but also need to work... ( and for me and my colleagues our work is our hobby indeed) we need / want / are ready to pay the difference for AW quality build and design with a better screen... (hopefully with better resolution too). Simply as that. -
-
I have two news: very good and very very bad.
Good: The stock screen is 30pin, pin to pin compatible with the RGBLED Matte screen that exists on the market.
Very very Bad: My first attempt to remove the glass cover has failed miserablyTried using hair dryer to affect the glue - no go.
I might make another attempt - using sharp and thin blades + alcohol solution but the risk to ruin the lid is too high so I'd need another lid for that experiment.
If someone has better ideas - you're more than welcome to share -
That annoying and limiting glueing is the principal reason why I thought that a good, flexible and friendly strategical approach and design from Dellienware could be if the poxiglass was of the kind that can be "snap-in/snap-out" (as many lid covers Dell sells) or a "slide-in/slide-out"... Their need (impossition to us) to glue it, is -at least- very suspicious... -

that's the best fluid to remove 3M double side tape after alcohol
you may also need a hard plastic spatula http://www.uvps.com/product.asp?code=SPATULA++J

Thanks Speedy. I still think Dell uses dryers to remove the glass cover in their labs. We would need some pro tools for that with narrow heat focusing and very high temps. If that works it's gonna be snap-out/snap-in and no risk of scratching the plastic and/or screen.

for now you can just leave the glass on and attach the new screen to first see if it will work?

The "snap-in/snap-out" lid covers used by Dell and others do not need any kind of glue. I have one of them in an old Inspiron 8600 still working and kicking like a workholic...
The idea is a poliglass E2E designed and made with the same approach... I would pay gladly for one! -

Actually, the connector is free on my panel, -

in that case can you try the screen like Scook said? -

I will build my own bezel to keep the matte screen.
-
Or at least some "Removable Repositionable Double Sided Tape"... Maybe like this one: 3M Scotch 665 Removable Repositionable Double Sided Tape at FindTape.com -

I am not saying brake the glass but in the worst case you know -
-
Lol, I just finished shaving using the screen reflection while talking to Dell customer service. Gonna miss the plexiglass
-
So does this mean we're a few steps closer to RGB glory?

And if alcohol does not work, gasoline is also a great solvent albeit messy as hell
-
Talking about solvent reminds me of the horror that is Cosmoline. Never restoring a WWII rifle again man. On that we used gas until someone turned us onto WD-40. That stuff is magical.

Hello Aiki! Did you find / have the data of the RGB matte panel? Think many are waiting for your experiences / answers...
-
Yes guys. This is one of the LTN184HT02-S01 variants from Samsung. Matte, 300nits+, complete AdobeRGB coverage, sRGB above 110% (I don't have the exact sRGB value yet). Gonna get the panel and calibrate it with Spyder3. Will post the real specs then.

Can you do the side by side comparison in specs for the stock and modified screen?
-
NTSC Color gamut 72%
Brightness ~250 nits
Contrast ~400:1
