Ya still sold it. ;) :D

Still, if you end up being able to source, modify and get an M18x working with a 18.4" RGBLED or greater grade panel, that will rock.

Sadly, I've seen it so many times with friends, family along with clients and co-workers that screen quality ranks very low on their "care" meter. It is similar to HDTVs and similar ilk when I point out just how dismal viewing angles and colors are and even when showing them what images and HDTV COULD look like, 99% of the time, I'm met with an effective shoulder shrug and indifference. These are the same users who could care less about dead pixels usually. So many times I've said, "btw, you have a dead pixel or pixels on your screen," or, 'did you notice how uneven your backlighting is and how much bleed your screen has when displaying darker hues?" and I get the, "Oh, I never even really noticed." To me, that just boggles my mind but it is what it is.

I'm sure, for the sake of pursuing the bottom line, companies like Dell and similar ilk have done their market research and this very, VERY small group of malcontents (present company included), is insignificant enough to only merit specialized offerings of better screens on specific premium systems and/or markets. I don't think the PC industry is out of touch. I actually think they are spot on.

The vast majority of us who frequent these boards do not represent the general masses who rush to Wal-Mart and similar places to purchase their consumer electronics.

With that being said, if you are offering what is the epitome of designer gaming laptops to the high end market, the least they could do is offer a high caliber screen option

On the other hand, I find myself somewhat in the camp of those general masses as while a great screen is definitely desired and an option I would pursue/purchase if available, it is not a deal breaker for me as long as it is 72%-80% gamut or higher.

True, the market for the high-end laptop screens is so small, even big companies like Dell and HP are reluctant to offer it and only do so for the prestige rather than profit.

Still, it's worth the shot IMHO.

Please be patient, M8 :) I'm still waiting for the English keyboard for my system and will check the screen model while doing the replacement + some upgrades. I already have a couple of RGB LED candidates but won't order until the connectors are confirmed to be the same type.

Thanks to Speedy we now have the screen model number: LTN184HT05-T01
As soon as we get the datasheet on the panel, the upgrade options will be finalized.

Is it an RGB LED or is it going to be WLED with a higher color gamut?

Depends on the connector type. If the stock screen is 30pin, we can upgrade it to RGB LED (matte/glossy). If it's 40pin - higher gamut WLED is the best we can do at this point.

After seeing my friend's m18 with the WLED and his XPS with the RGB...it boggles the mind that they'd stoop that low with the m18. So what they said^

I neeeed my laptop's screen to at least come close to my desktop's

The screen isn't that bad. And it's not a big deal considering the non-standard 18" size. If there was a better screen they could mass produce I'm sure it would have been in there. And if it just takes time it'll make it into a refresh.

At $3k-7k per unit, I think enthusiasts (read: us) would've been willing to shell out a few hundred extra for a better screen. The WLED is not bad, no. But it really doesn't suit the price range.

I'm kind of shocked it didn't make it into the R3

It's true. For you my friend.

But, please, try to understand: for somes that not just game but also need to work... ( and for me and my colleagues our work is our hobby indeed) we need / want / are ready to pay the difference for AW quality build and design with a better screen... (hopefully with better resolution too). Simply as that. ;)

It wouldn't have been a few hundred. That's why it's not there. Try closer to a grand.

How is it AW's problem that you and a tiny subsection of consumers need them to both serve the gaming community and yours? It's a tad unrealistic.

I have two news: very good and very very bad.

Good: The stock screen is 30pin, pin to pin compatible with the RGBLED Matte screen that exists on the market.

Very very Bad: My first attempt to remove the glass cover has failed miserably :( Tried using hair dryer to affect the glue - no go.

I might make another attempt - using sharp and thin blades + alcohol solution but the risk to ruin the lid is too high so I'd need another lid for that experiment.

If someone has better ideas - you're more than welcome to share :)

I was affraid of that too... Thanks for the good news but... regarding the poxiglass cover... the one that have had good experiences in that matter is the mighty mouse: Speedy. Maybe he can help?

That annoying and limiting glueing is the principal reason why I thought that a good, flexible and friendly strategical approach and design from Dellienware could be if the poxiglass was of the kind that can be "snap-in/snap-out" (as many lid covers Dell sells) or a "slide-in/slide-out"... Their need (impossition to us) to glue it, is -at least- very suspicious...

WD-40 :) that's the best fluid to remove 3M double side tape after alcohol :)

Thanks Speedy. I still think Dell uses dryers to remove the glass cover in their labs. We would need some pro tools for that with narrow heat focusing and very high temps. If that works it's gonna be snap-out/snap-in and no risk of scratching the plastic and/or screen.

The 3M 4919F is completely weatherproof and won't move even at 100 C. It's 0.5 mm, the plexy glass would melt before lol

I meant leave the glass/plastic attached to the existing screen but just remove both and put the new screen to make sure it works before trying to remove the glass/plastic at all

    I think so, too.

The "snap-in/snap-out" lid covers used by Dell and others do not need any kind of glue. I have one of them in an old Inspiron 8600 still working and kicking like a workholic... ;)

The idea is a poliglass E2E designed and made with the same approach... I would pay gladly for one!

I am not sure because there is to many different double sided tapes to know for sure witch one they use i link the 4919f because is thin like the one on the lid but there is a lot more Shop 3M: Double Coated Tapes

yeah i know but how to remove the connector from the stock screen if is covered with magnesium ? in that case he need to find a connector that fits the screen and the m18X mobo

This is why It would be a better design if they used with the E2E poxiglass the same "clipping" design as in the lids covers.

Or at least some "Removable Repositionable Double Sided Tape"... Maybe like this one: 3M Scotch 665 Removable Repositionable Double Sided Tape at FindTape.com

in that case is not a big deal if you brake the glass in the process because lets say down the road you want to sell the machine you can buy a panel from Ebay or some and sell the machine in original condition

I am not saying brake the glass but in the worst case you know ;)

Yes guys. This is one of the LTN184HT02-S01 variants from Samsung. Matte, 300nits+, complete AdobeRGB coverage, sRGB above 110% (I don't have the exact sRGB value yet). Gonna get the panel and calibrate it with Spyder3. Will post the real specs then.

Will do. At this time we know the real specs for the stock screen:

    NTSC Color gamut 72%
    Brightness ~250 nits
    Contrast ~400:1
